“Nothing I do in my classroom is ever done alone,” she said. “I am very lucky to work with a staff that shares and collaborates and supports on another, as well as students and parents who value civic education and encourage discussion and debate in learning about our history.”

This is not the first time Ziemnik has been recognized for her skills. In 2002 she received a James Madison Fellowship and spent a summer at Georgetown University studying the Consti-tution.

Rocky River High School Assistant Princi-pal Brian Gergely described Ziemnik as caring, creative and innovative.

“Her passion and enthusiasm is obvious, and her students subsequently share in her ex-citement for the content,” Gergely wrote in her nomination. “She challenges students to think abstractly but communicates a caring demeanor that yields outstanding results.”

Ziemnik said her love of history came from her parents. Family vacations revolved around checking out local history at their destinations. She credits her Miami University methods Pro-fessor Dr. Michael Fuller and former Rocky River High School teacher Barbara Boyle with mentoring her during her undergraduate stud-ies and early teaching career, and supporting her over the last 19 years.

As part of her award for being named the state history teacher of the year, Ziemnik re-ceived a $1,000 cash award, an archive of books and historical resources, and an invitation to at-tend a 2018 Gilder Lehrman Teacher Seminar.

Have a book that needs a new home? Consider donating it to the Little Free Library at Kensington Intermediate School in Rocky River.

As the school adviser for Girls On The Run, a non-profit that promotes wellness and confidence in young girls through running, health and awareness, Library Assistant Lynne Kromer helped to sponsor a Little Free Library as a community service project for her students.

A Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange. There are more than 50,000 registered Little Free Library book exchanges across the country and in more than 70 countries around the world.

Books are provided by students, parents and neighbors. Kromer said users have left heartfelt mes-

sage of thanks and support for the project.“Books that are no longer needed at home can be brought in and put in the Little Free

Library at any time,” Kromer said. “Any passerby is welcome to help themselves to a book, and it is encouraged for them to give a book at the same time or a later date. It is a simple box with a latch, no sign-outs, no strings attached.”

Kromer wrote a grant to the Rocky River Education Foundation and earned $365 for the kit to build the physical library. Rocky River Little League kicked in another $119 to cover shipping and handling. The Library is installed on the east side of the building, out-side of the main office and is accessible to anyone in the community. Kensington’s Library is chartered and can be found on the Little Free Library world map at https://littlefreeli-brary.org/.

Kromer is introducing the project to her 27 classes that come through the library each week and hopes her students will become stewards of the Library.

“It already is a beehive of literary activity, and students are very enthusiastic of sup-porting the effort,” Kromer said.

It’s a great time of year if you are a sports fan in Cleveland. Let’s get out there and root for our teams.

Since we are on the topic of sports, nearly ev-ery school, starting from early elementary all the way up through college, is well into their season of sports as well. We tell our patients to wear some kind of protective device to protect their teeth while playing sports. As is human na-ture, people generally think that nothing will ever happen to them.

Injuries to the mouth are common in all kinds of sporting activities. Certainly when you are talking about a sport like football or hockey, a mouth guard is really, really essential. Over the years that I have practiced dentistry, it is so sad to see a young man or woman, who has never had a cavity in their life, all of a sudden come in with two broken front teeth that may now need root canals and crowns and will now require a lifetime worth of dentistry.

Wearing a mouth guard is not just for kids any more. People are living longer and are healthier. Lots of people at my age and older are engaging in all kinds of sports, includ-ing racquetball, tennis, rugby, and everything else that is out there. I have seen people get elbowed in the mouth and break off teeth playing racquetball or basketball. It’s not just

the real rough sports where people should consider wear-ing a mouth guard.

The other kind of mouth guard that is used very often is for people who grind their teeth. Approximately 1/3 of the population grind their teeth in one form or another. If you are one of those with chipped teeth, easily broken fill-ings, caps or crowns that keep coming off, there is a good chance that you are a grinder. Mouth guards are common-ly used in these instances as well.

Your teeth are one of your best investments, so it really pays to protect them whenever you are doing any kind of aggressive activity. We are happy to offer you a free con-sultation to see if you need some kind of mouth guard or if you have any other dental needs. Please feel free to contact us at 440-892-1810. We are here to help you smile.

The Bay Village Garden Club will present the program “From Garbage to Garden” on Mon. Oct. 23 at Bay United Methodist Church, Fellowship Hall, 29931 Lake Road. Guest speaker Greg Malone of Tri-C will teach the essentials to begin composting at home, without odors and other common problems associated with the practice. Composting of-fers a natural alternative to chemical fertilizers, helps to divert household waste away from the trashcan, reduces land-fill disposal, and is a great source of mulch for the landscape. Luncheon will be served at 11:30 a.m. $5 fee for guests. Please make reservations by visiting their website bayvillagegardenclub.com or by calling Sharen at 440-871-9098. Avon High School crowned seniors Drew Horton and Morgan Nemcek as the school’s 2017 Homecoming King and Queen Friday night prior to the Eagles big win over Southwestern Conference foe Lakewood.

The festive atmosphere grew with anticipation under a beautiful autumn twilight as the homecoming court was introduced. The Eagle football team, ranked first in the state in Div. II, lived up to expectations with a 54-21 win over Lakewood. The rout lifted the Eagles to 7-0 overall this year. The team is also ranked first in its region in the OHSAA Div. 2 poll.

Homecoming is celebrated in grand style in Avon. A week’s worth of fun included a festive Spirit Week at Avon High. It included different themes for each day of the week, all leading up to the Thursday evening Homecoming Pa-rade from Avon High to Joe Firment Stadium for a Pep Rally and Powder Puff football game. The official Home-coming Court presentation took place on the field before the game against Lakewood. The week concluded with the annual Homecoming dance at Avon High School on Satur-day night.

Taking part as Avon Place guests Frances Ber-ber (100 years old), Patricia Glending, Mary Ann Bregar, Maria Perez-Bostic, Rosa Oehlke and Ruth Scarpelli and Willa Harington. Students were de-lighted to welcome these special guests to Avon High and enjoyed a lively hour of conversation and stories.

The Ohio Academy of Science has selected Holy Trinity School in Avon, Ohio to receive the Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Educa-tion for accomplishments in the 2016-17 school year. The award recognizes schools and teachers who display ex-cellence in STEM-based teaching.

Holy Trinity School is one of 58 Ohio schools to be honored based on four categories ranging from hosting a science fair to student participation in science activi-ties outside of the classroom. A team of 11 teachers and administrators collaborated during the 2016-2017 school year to apply for the distinction.

Junior High Science Teacher Nicole Castrigano – a contributor to the school’s application – appreciated the commitment of her fellow teachers.

“It’s an honor for Holy Trinity School to be recog-nized for our efforts in STEM education,” Castrigano said. “As teachers, we strive to provide our students with op-

portunities to learn new technology, math and engineering concepts to enhance our science curriculum both in and out of the classroom.”

Get Ready Cleveland - FLU SEASON is Almost Here

ToileVu™ : The Toilet Vacuum for Smelly Odors - not only removes 98% of odors, it vacuums up the airborne bacteria and other micro-organisms created in the toilet bowl when someone goes #2 or vomits. These nasty microbes otherwise fill the air to reach our toothbrushes, bathroom surfaces and our mouths and noses! ToileVu™ does NOT cover up or mask these odorous molecules - it naturally ELIMINATES them !!

Odor, Airborne Bacteria and Micro-Organisms Never Escape the Toilet Bowl.

They are DESTROYED !!

Installs Inside Toilet Tank

Three Systems Work Together For An Amazing Result: 1. Water Filtration System (creates a high-humidity environment that is ideal for oxidation). 2. Catalyst System (accelerated chemical reaction converts odorous molecules into non-odorous CO2 & H2O). 3. Ozone System (sterilizes all molecular by-products).

There seems to be something in the human condition that makes people blush at the mere thought of a smelly bathroom. Especially when guests are visiting! A Westlake company is making it their busi-ness to solve that problem, with technology that has been used throughout Europe and Asia for 15 years.

OdorTech Distributing LLC is bringing humor and help, with its “Smell ya never!” service mark and “Pepé Le Poo” mascot, as the first U.S. distributor of a toilet odor removal technology. The product, labeled “ToiléVu: The Toilet Vacuum for Smelly Odors,” is installed inside the tank of an existing toilet.

ToiléVu is guaranteed to immediately (and naturally) eliminate 98 percent of airborne bacteria, micro-organisms and unpleasant odors associated with going No. 2.

When the ToiléVu vacuum fan is activated, negative pressure is created and the foul smelling air in the toilet bowl is sucked up through the porcelain channels located along the inner perimeter of the bowl (which are also used to dispense water during flushing).

These odorous gases are sucked up through a combination of three deodorization systems which are installed inside the toilet tank. The systems work in concert utilizing a combination of water filtra-tion, catalysis (which is an accelerated chemical reaction process) and molecular ozone sterilization. There are no fragrances added. Go to www.odortech.com to learn more.

Westlake Homecoming Welcomes Alums

Westlake Number One fan Chad DiLillo shares a ride with Supt. Scott Goggin in the Westlake homecoming parade.

Longtime Westlake Schools Music Director Thomas F. Hill was greeted by band members after halftime at homecoming. Mr. Hill, who founded such traditions as Music a la Mode and the Westlake Fight Song, ‘Stand Up and Cheer,’ is still actively interested in West-lake Schools music and is lovingly welcomed by current students.

Westlake High’s long tradition of celebrating home-coming was enjoyed in festive style last week.

A parade featuring the Rose Court and other elements of the Westlake community kicked off from Lee Burneson at 5:30 Friday afternoon and made its way to UH SJMC Field at the high school for the football game.

The Demons took on tough Avon and fell to the league-leading Eagles. But Westlake got on the scoreboard early and had the game tied in the first quarter.

A highlight of the night was the introduction of this year’s Westlake Alumni Hall of Fame class (pictured below). Inductees included Tom Beres (‘68) - Distinguished Alum who devoted a lifetime career to broadcast journalism; Karen Swanson Haan ‘99- Athletic; George Christ & Ken Krepop- Honorary Faculty Alumns: and the Dean Family - Lifetime Achievement Hall of Fame.

Westlake Homecoming parade fun!

Welcome, Hall of Fame Alums!

Westlake fell to unbeaten Avon, 55-21.

Light lunch & meet the doctors!

At their Westlake medical office, Doctors Evenhouse and Manacci have been treating patients with chronic pain by using neurostimulation therapy. The results have been posi-tive, with most patients reporting a reduction in pain within 24 hours.

Neurostimulation is a minimally-invasive and drug-free therapy, where patients tem-porarily wear a small, disposable device that attaches to the ear. That neurostimulation device emits a low, imperceptible electrical current into the external ear, then on to the vagus nerve in the brain. This nerve affects the pain pathways in the spinal cord, and reduces pain signals regardless of their cause. Only licensed medical providers may apply this device.

This treatment has been used in Europe for over seven years, and has just recently been cleared by the FDA for use in the U.S. The doctors at Nightingale Centers for Re-generative Medicine treat patients with many types of painful conditions, including arthritis, joint injuries, fibromyalgia, migraines, neuropathy, back and neck pain, peripheral arterial disease, and others.

Those interested in scheduling a consultation may do so by visiting the clinic website at www.NGI-CLINICS.com or by calling the office at (844) 764-4633.
