    something politically spirited to showcase the ront-runnerin premium coated paper, McCoy. (Not to worry thisis a totally nonpartisan promotion.)

    Mccoy2008 Pays TribuTe to this time-honored American tradition ocreating political buttons which, by the way, did

    get its start with our rst President. In 1789, supporters oGeorge Washington sported a brass clothing-buttonthat read, G.W. Long Live the President an intentionalplay o the phrase Long Live the King. However, metallicpolitical buttons, as we now think o them, rst came on

    the scene in the Presidential election o 1896.

    This had less to do with the candidates and everythingto do with the invention o thin clear sheets o celluloidthat could be used to protect the image on the button.

    Beore the invention o celluloid, political items includedchina, ribbons, errotypes, tintypes, canes, hats, watches,watch obs and an endless array o other paraphernalia.By the beginning o 1916, images could alsobe directly stamped on the metal with no protectivecovering. These litho buttons were a lot cheaperto make, but ar more likely to be damaged than cellos.To this day, manuacturers continue to create bothtypes o buttons.

    is oten reerred to as The Golden Era o PoliticalButtons. That said, youd be hard-pressed to placeany classications on button design ater thatera. Unlike specic periods in art, button designis completely ree-orm. When viewed across thedecades, however, you can see a bolder use o color,typography, photography and illustration beginto emerge.

    With the onset o celluloid, the end o the 19th centurymarked the beginning o the Golden Age o buttons a period o more ornate design.

    in The 1896 elecTion, Republican William McKinley deeated

    Democrat William Jennings Bryan and claimed thenal term o the century.

    McKinleys victory can largely be credited to hisout-o-the-box-thinking campaign manager, Mark

    Hanna, who invented many modern campaigntechniques that are used to this day. McKinley alsooverwhelmed Bryan, outspending his campaign byten to one (he had a whopping $3.5million budget,equal to roughly $82million nowadays).

    Besides copious spending, part o Hannas campaignstrategy included our little hero, the button.

    Roosevelt, disappointed with the man he championed in 1908,ailed to nab the Republican nomination rom Tat. In turn,Teddy ormed the new Progressive Party, nicknamed the BullMoose Party. Rather than sticking with the presidents othe past, the American people decided to try the new guy onor size, making Wilson the only Democrat to win oce

    between 1892 and 1932.

    in1916, PresidenT WoodroW Wilson ran again on the Democratic ticket.Future Supreme Court Justice Charles Evans Hughesbecame the Republican candidate and put up a hard ght

    against the incumbent. With the initial wave o votes,Hughes took an early lead. Some newspapers even jumpedthe gun, announcing Hughess victory. However, as thenight wore on and additional votes were tallied, Wilson emergedas the winner by an extremely narrow margin.

    The ollowing morning, a reporter gave Hughes a ring to gethis reaction to the loss. The gentleman who answered thephone told the reporter the President is sleeping. The reportercandidly replied, When he wakes up, tell him he isnt thePresident anymore.

    Discontented with his handling o the troops ollowingthe war, Americans reacted unsympathetically to WoodrowWilson, and were eager or his removal rom oce.

    Republican Warren G. Harding and Democrat James M. Coxought out the 1920 election or control o the White

    House. Harding walloped Cox in a landslide election thatremains the most lopsided popular-vote win in presidentialhistory 60.3% to 34.1%.

    Harding didnt get to celebrate his victory long. He passedaway in 1923, leaving the presidency to Vice President

    Calvin Coolidge. In 1924, Coolidge ollowed in TeddyRoosevelts ootsteps, winning the election ater obtainingthe presidency by deault.

    The 1928 elecTion yielded the same result as the previous two theRepublicans won. Herbert Hoover took on Alred Smith

    in a head-to-head race (no third party ticket this time). Smithscampaign was plagued by prejudice (he was RomanCatholic) and hostility toward his anti-prohibitionist stanceand legacy o corruption. Hoover won, but the GreatDepression, just a year away, would soon transgure the nation.

    Roosevelt used Hoovers ailure to deal with the crisisas a springboard or his own platorm o reorms. In time,we would know them as the New Deal. Peoplewanted change, and they got it, in the orm o a landslidevictory or FDR.

    When 1936rolled around and FDR was up or reelection, he wasstill working to implement the provisions o the NewDeal. Social Security, unemployment benets and otherprograms ound immense popularity with Americans.

    Alred Landon, a Republican rom Kansas, challengedFDR in the 1936 election on what many assumedwould be a close race. It turned out to be one o thegreatest landslides in history FDR carried all buttwo states.
