Creating Test Questions

Question Types

In the Sapphire Test Builder, you can create 6 types of Questions

The Format of the Test Builder is constructed on placing Questions in a Group.

You can determine how many questions are placed in one group.

As the students take the test / assessment, all of the questions in the first Group will be displayed on the screen. The student would scroll down the screen to answer all of the questions in that Group. When the students are complete with questions in one group, they would click Next.

The Questions placed in the next Group, would be visible to the student on the next screen.

How to Create Question Groups and Questions

On the My Tests tab, after creating a Test, click on the Edit Questions Tab

Page 8: Sapphire Teacher Gradebook Test Builder Manual 103113 · In the Sapphire Test Builder, you can create 6 types of Questions The Format of the Test Builder is constructed on placing

K12 Systems, Inc. 7 7540 Windsor Drive, Suite 314 Confidential Allentown, PA 18195

The Name of your Test appears on the header bar. The number of test questions and Total Points will update as you create questions.

You will start by clicking on Add New Group.

After clicking on Add New Group, you will need to provide the following information for this Group of questions after clicking on the New Group Bar that appears on the canvas

After clicking on New Group bar, you will complete the following steps

• Name the Group • Determine how many questions are in this group

• Provide a description (directions) that will appear on the screen as a heading for this group of questions.

• Determine whether or not, you want the order of the questions in this group, to be shuffled for each student.

Page 9: Sapphire Teacher Gradebook Test Builder Manual 103113 · In the Sapphire Test Builder, you can create 6 types of Questions The Format of the Test Builder is constructed on placing

K12 Systems, Inc. 8 7540 Windsor Drive, Suite 314 Confidential Allentown, PA 18195

Next, you will start to Add Questions to the test or Add Questions from the Question Bank (which includes questions from tests that you have developed and Questions from a District visible test)

When adding a Question, you can choose from six options

Multiple Choice Option

Choose the Type of Question that you would like to Add and click Create. Cancel would abort that option.

Complete the following screen fields for all Multiple Choice question types Most Items on the left hand side of this screen apply to all Six Question Types

• Question Name - ( ex Q1 )

• Question Text -The Question

• Question Total Points- Point value of the question

• General Feedback – Optional, a description of where information could be found in the textbook about this topic. ( ex chapter 1 – Clouds )

• Extra Credit Flag – Is this question an extra credit question yes or no

• Standards – each question can be linked to a PA / Common Core Standard in the Dictionary o This gives you the ability to filter and search for questions to add to a new test by

standard. • Tag Labels – A key word that is associated to this question.

o This gives you the ability to filter and search for questions to add to a new test by its tag label ( ex – clouds )

Page 10: Sapphire Teacher Gradebook Test Builder Manual 103113 · In the Sapphire Test Builder, you can create 6 types of Questions The Format of the Test Builder is constructed on placing

K12 Systems, Inc. 9 7540 Windsor Drive, Suite 314 Confidential Allentown, PA 18195

On the right hand side of the canvas, you must complete the following sections

• Correct Answers – the number of correct answers to this question – one or multiple • Shuffle Answers – Yes or No. This means that, if set to yes, each students version of the test

would have the multiple choice answer options appear in a different order.

• Answer Format – A. B. C., 1. 2. 3. , I. II. III. – the labeling of your answer choices

• Answer – Each of the Possible answers from your choices • Points Worth – the Point value of each answer ( ex 1, .5 for partial credit, 0, -.5, -1 )

o Note – when working with Multiple Choice questions with multiple answers, you may want to create point values of -1 for incorrect answers so that a student cannot select all 4 answers to your question and earn all of the correct points by their actions. (for example – you have 4 choices a, b, c, d with a and c being the correct answers. If they picked all 4 answers, they still earn 2 points. But, if you set the point value for each answer to be a=1, b= -1, c=1 and d= -1, and the student that selects all four, they would end up with zero points (2 – 2 = 0)

o With the option for multiple answers, another field will appear on the screen and ask you if you want the point value of the answer ( for student answers ) to go below zero

( yes or no )

• Specific Answer Feedback – This allows you to provide specific feedback to the student answers for this question. If you use this option, this feedback will override the General Answer Feedback that was set up when you created the test.
