Keotel will return to his borne in West Somerville, a suburb of Boston. The reason siven publicity for Kensel's resignation is failing eyesight, bat from the family this has been learned: Kensel entered West Point on June 13 of last year. Early in July he was in the hos- pital on account of trouble with his eyes. He never had had difficulty with his eyes prior to entering the academy. While standing on his head in a tent, which was the rule for "pieties" whenever an upper class man en- tered, he was kicked in the rhrht eye, possi- bly accidentally, by an upper class man, and was sent to the hospital. Kensel was not seriously injured and was soon able to leave the hospital. Soon after. »hile attempting to swallow a teas|ioonful of toiiasco sauce, he choked and i' spilled over his handkerchief. He was blindfolded with the same handker- chief afterward and the sauce got into his eyes. This compiled him to return again to the hospital. Atiout August 11 he was taken off the sick list, his ejea having recovered. Three days afterward he again was in the hogpirat, a? the report shows, with ''stomach troubles." He had been compelled to eat a great quan- tity of rice, a couple of boiled cabbages, six- ty-three prunes, and had also been compell- ed io do 150 "eagles.'* This drove him into convulsions and a pil- low t r blanket was placed over his face so that his cries could not he heard. As a re- sult of this treatment, the family believes, the physical condition of Kensel has been tl-n, waea pme* ** tmttmu*, to governntent aad oaatroT of the aaate to Ita people"- we woold expect the uiterveninf power to keep Ita word, would we not? That would be the part of aehrralrie and anselOsh and honest rescuer—is it not so? Why should not Cuba take us at our word? Suppose that, without heat, without re- proaches and especially without violence, the Cubans should proceed with the ralitication of their Constitution (modelled admirably for their purposes upon our own) and then elect a President and Congress under its provisions and organize its Government thoroughly. With these proofs t.iat the island is not only "pacified," but that it has a government of, by aud for its own people, wtmld not Cub* be in a position to ask oa to withdraw our troops and to propose treaties for the com- mon benefit and protection of both republics? And what answer could Mr. McKinley make to such a demonstration and such a proposi- tion? If Americans were Cabana, this, wa think, is what they would do. And if wise couiuHs prevail this is what the Cahan patriots, who have fought so long aad sacriflced so much for Fre.Ki.ua ami fnifc-peodeoce, will do.—Jf. r. The Stingiu;; Tree. This stranoe tree is a native of Australia.

It is very pretty to look at, but very disagreeable to touch. The peculiarity of its sting is that it leaves no mark ot any kind, and at the same time causes great pain. Sometimes the effects are felt for mouths. Doss and horses that have come in contact with the tree often have to be shot, so maddening are the effects upon them.

It may help us in the effort to try to fancy, what our Revolutionary sires would have said if France, having assisted materially in securing our release from British tyranny, had proposed to the Colonies substantially the six conditions which the Administration, with the help of a subservient Congress, seeks to impose upon Cub*—the right to supervise all foreign treaties, to control her finances and credit, to intervene in domestic affairs, to demand coaling and naval stations, and io urate an island within thirty miles of the Cabas coast

at Wait Phial aaa throaab the resignation of Frederick aTenaei aa a cadet in the United States Military Academy. Keotel will return to his borne in West Somerville, a suburb of Boston. The reason siven publicity for Kensel's resignation is failing eyesight, bat from the family this has been learned:

Kensel entered West Point on June 13 of last year. Early in July he was in the hospital on account of trouble with his eyes. He never had had difficulty with his eyes prior to entering the academy. While standing on his head in a tent, which was the rule for "pieties" whenever an upper class man entered, he was kicked in the rhrht eye, possibly accidentally, by an upper class man, and was sent to the hospital. Kensel was not seriously injured and was soon able to leave the hospital. Soon after. »hile attempting to swallow a teas|ioonful of toiiasco sauce, he choked and i' spilled over his handkerchief. He was blindfolded with the same handkerchief afterward and the sauce got into his eyes. This compiled him to return again to the hospital. Atiout August 11 he was taken off the sick list, his ejea having recovered. Three days afterward he again was in the hogpirat, a? the report shows, with ''stomach troubles."

He had been compelled to eat a great quantity of rice, a couple of boiled cabbages, six-ty-three prunes, and had also been compelled io do 150 "eagles.'*

This drove him into convulsions and a pillow t r blanket was placed over his face so that his cries could not he heard. As a result of this treatment, the family believes, the physical condition of Kensel has been
