The rise of new technologies has altered the com-petitive landscape for businesses. The Internet is a

powerful communication infrastructure that can connect virtually any client anywhere at any time and thereby in-

tegrate processes and people in a new, unprecedentedway. Business processes that were once restricted to cor-porate networks and their users can now be extendedacross company boundaries to form a virtual value chainof business partners.

Many executives are seeking ways to exploit thesenew possibilities. They want to improve their key busi-ness processes both within and beyond their enterpriseand they are asking for software that supports their rela-tionships with their customers and partners. But this alsoleads to increasing heterogeneity that adds to the com-plexity of growing internal IT landscapes. Applicationcomponents from different vendors must communicatewith each other and must be blended into a consistentinfrastructure without inflating the IT budget. Therefore, concepts and tools are needed that reduce costs, whilemaintaining strategic flexibility and the possibility forbusiness innovation.

SAPs answer to these challenges is open e-busi-ness integration with mySAP Technology. Being a nativeWeb infrastructure, it is based upon open standards forreliable, mission-critical e-business solutions. Its keybuilding blocks are portals for user-centric collaboration,

a Web Application Server providing Web services, and anexchange infrastructure for process-centric collaboration. With mySAP Technology, companies can easily build, de-ploy, and syndicate Web services across system and com-

pany boundaries. Furthermore mySAP Technology protectsa companys existing investment while providing the famil-iar software functions on a more flexible and open technol-ogy platform.

This issue of SAP INFO focuses on this new ap-proach. In our Forum section starting on page 12 you canread how the three key elements of mySAP Technology portals, the Web Application Server, and the exchange infra-structure drive collaborative business across mySAP.comand third-party applications. Other highlights in this issue in-clude an interview with the VP and CIO of Pratt & Whitney,Peter Longo, on page 46. Peter talks about his companyspartnership with SAP, about experiences and plans for futurecooperations.

I hope you will enjoy reading this issue.

    Sincerely,

Henning Kagermann,CEO and Co-Chairman of SAP
