Compression
Compression is an option in ASE •Application transparent set of compression capabilities •Both regular relational data as well as unstructured data •Reduces the storage footprint of databases •Benefits of reduced costs, while improving performance

Partitioning
Partitioning allows DBAs to divide tables into smaller partitions that are separately accessed and managed, good for large and growing data sets

Partitioning cont...
A table as ― "n" mini-tables
• User & developer – one table
• Administrator & optimizer – many partitions
• Maintenance operations bounded
• Option: create index only on active partition
Methods of partitioning
• Hash – simple - balanced
• Range – e.g. By date
• List – distinct tables

Column Level Encryption
Encryption is a column property, just like NULL or NOT NULL
Benefits
• Simple and logical extension of concept of column properties, you can
selectively encrypt specific columns in a table with different key, thus
providing granularity of access
• You can create different keys for different columns
• The actual key value is generated by the system
• Minimizes performance impact

Comparing SAP Sybase ASE with alternativesBeyond initial licensing and maintenance costs
1 Calculating the True Cost of RDBMS Ownership and How Sybase ASE Stacks Up: A Guide for SAP Business Suite Users, Carl Olafson and Randy Perry, IDC Corporation, December 2011.
SAP Sybase ASE: Five-year savings per 100 users: $128,5801
“On average, companies in
the study estimated the
total cost for [SAP] Sybase
ASE to be 28% less than
the total cost of other
RDBMSs they are using,
which will save them about
$129,000 per 100 users
over five years.”1

Value leversHow a database-management platform affects overall value
Software costs Initial licensing and ongoing maintenance fees
Efficiency Amount of servers, storage, power, and floor space
Ease of administration Staffing resources required to install, tune, and
manage the database
Reliability Downtime (planned or unplanned) resulting in
missed or lost revenues
Time to market Business opportunity costs associated with delayed
deployment of new applications or functionality

Significantly lower TCO with SAP Sybase ASESurvey analyzed the total cost of ownership of SAP Sybase ASE
SAP Sybase ASE was found to be more economical in over 85% of cost measurements
In areas of licensing, administration and support, SAP Sybase ASE was 20% less expensive
SAP Sybase ASE delivers on ease of use, requiring less resources for administration and maintenance; Some 61% of respondents said that SAP Sybase ASE requires fewer DBA resources than other products.
“. . . a clear conclusion from this research is that Sybase is significantly superior . . . with respect to total cost of ownership.”

Run Better with Sybase ASETask and Challenges for DB Administrators
Are there performance bottlenecks?
?! Is the Backup scheduled?
Is there sufficient
disk space available?
Which tables need new statistics?Change DB
Configuration? Are there any DB errors that
need to be taken care of?
Why is a spesific transaction
running slow?

Unified administration reduces complexitySingle interface for managing both the application and SAP Sybase ASE
Database administration (DBA) cockpit and SAP Solution Manager: Integrated monitoring and administration tools for easier
database administration. The DBA cockpit is fully remote-enabled and allows
database management even if the SAP software system is down
Database performance warehouse in SAP Solution Manager provides full insight into database performance and its history
SAP Sybase ASE allows dynamic configuration for several parameters and avoids unnecessary downtimes of the database for customers
Flexible backup and restore methods available, support of filesystem and tape devices, and integration with storage managers

Run Better with SAP Sybase ASE DBA Cockpit
DBA Cockpit - Sybase specific implementation
• Database monitoring is based on database server level
• Short term history kept in monitored system (depending on type of data and configuration; default
is 14 days)
• All data is stored in a special database outside the SAP schema: saptools
• Data collection is done by stored procedures (injected by the DBA Cockpit)
• Stored procedures are called by the Sybase ASE scheduler
• Data collection takes place independent of the monitoring system
• No network traffic needed for data collection
• One central data source for all monitoring tools (DBA Cockpit, DB Performance Warehouse, E2E
Alerting, EWA...)
• No SAP application needed on monitored system, full remote enablement
