SANTOSH CHANDRA BHATTACHARYA MEMORIAL TRUST NEWSLETTER JUNE 2017 WELCOME Welcome to our very first issue of Santosh Chandra Bhattacharya Memorial Trust newsletter. The Trust was established a little over one year ago when some of us, the ex-students of Ramakrishna Mission Boys’ Home High School, Rahara, came together to form this organization in the memory of our beloved Sir to pay homage to this great soul. The work of the Trust is overseen by trustee members with help of the working committee who meet on a regular basis. You will get to know more about different projects of the Trust family in the next few pages. We will publish a newsletter each quarter to keep you up to date with the various initiatives of the Trust. THE BEGINNING Help the distressed. Educate the poor children. Reach out to the have-nots. That’s the credo of Ramakrishna Mission. That’s the teaching of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. That’s the lesson we’ve learned from our teachers as students of Rahara Ramakrishna Mission, a great institution built by Swami Punayanandaji Maharaj. That’s the philosophy Santoshbabu exemplified with his life. That’s our proud inheritance. That’s the tradition we intended to carry forward. The “Santosh Chandra Bhattacharya Memorial Trust” is registered under The Indian Trusts Act in 2016. We knew that noble words are not enough, we are undertaking a difficult journey. Once Swami Punayanandaji Maharaj said to Lady Wavell that his life will be fulfilled when the orphan children will no more think themselves as orphans. That’s our inspiration too. That’s why we are always confident that “Santosh Chandra Bhattacharya Memorial Trust” will be able to help poor children to educate themselves and to become responsible citizens of this country and society. That will be our true homage to our beloved Sir.

MEMORIAL TRUST

NEWSLETTER

JUNE 2017 WELCOME

Welcome to our very first issue of Santosh Chandra Bhattacharya Memorial Trust newsletter. The

Trust was established a little over one year ago when some of us, the ex-students of Ramakrishna

Mission Boys’ Home High School, Rahara, came together to form this organization in the memory of

our beloved Sir to pay homage to this great soul. The work of the Trust is overseen by trustee

members with help of the working committee who meet on a regular basis. You will get to know more

about different projects of the Trust family in the next few pages. We will publish a newsletter each

quarter to keep you up to date with the various initiatives of the Trust.

THE BEGINNING

Help the distressed. Educate the poor children. Reach out to the have-nots.

That’s the credo of Ramakrishna Mission. That’s the teaching of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi and

Swami Vivekananda. That’s the lesson we’ve learned from our teachers as students of Rahara

Ramakrishna Mission, a great institution built by Swami Punayanandaji Maharaj. That’s the

philosophy Santoshbabu exemplified with his life. That’s our proud inheritance. That’s the tradition

we intended to carry forward.

The “Santosh Chandra Bhattacharya Memorial Trust” is registered under The Indian Trusts Act in

2016. We knew that noble words are not enough, we are undertaking a difficult journey. Once Swami

Punayanandaji Maharaj said to Lady Wavell that his life will be fulfilled when the orphan children will

no more think themselves as orphans. That’s our inspiration too. That’s why we are always confident

that “Santosh Chandra Bhattacharya Memorial Trust” will be able to help poor children to educate

themselves and to become responsible citizens of this country and society. That will be our true

homage to our beloved Sir.

JOURNEY SO FAR

MAY 2016

The first initiative of the “Santosh Chandra Bhattacharya Memorial

Trust” was to arrange for apparatuses for the school laboratory, and

providing books to students of class XII.

We also committed to support fourteen students for their education,

food and boarding expenses for next two years till they pass the

Higher Secondary examination.

SEPTEMBER 2016

On the School Foundation day, Santosh Chandra Bhattacharya

Memorial Trust joined hands with RKM Boys’ Home Rahara in

arranging special lunch for all the residential students of RKM Boys’

Home, Rahara.

At the beginning of festive season, SCBMT took an initiative to

expand its arms towards children of below 12 years of age. A school

is being run at Arpatan, Khardah by Gadadhar Abhyudaya Prakalpa (GAP), Ramakrishna Mission.

SCBMT distributed new dresses to two hundred and fifty students of this school. Swami Jayanandaji

Maharaj, Secretary Rahara Ramakrishna Mission and Chandi Maharaj, who is the mentor of this

initiative, graced the occasion with their presence.

NOVEMBER 2016

Santosh Chandra Bhattacharya Memorial Trust has launched T-Shirt for fund

raising from donors. Money collected from the donations is being utilized for food

and education of the children. The T-shirt has already become very popular among

donors and is very much in demand. It is available in different sizes, a perfect item

for personal wear and gift.

FEBRUARY 2017

Santosh Chandra Bhattacharya Memorial Trust distributed refreshments

among residential students at Rahara Ramakrishna Mission Boys' Home

to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. The same

was shared with the little students of Gadadhar Abhyudaya Prakalpa

(GAP) through RKM Boys’ Home Rahara.

MARCH 2017

Santosh Chandra Bhattacharya Memorial Trust provided partial financial support for the operation

of Ankylosing Spondylitis to Mr. Prasanta Ghosh, a national level body builder. Prasanta is suffering

from this disease for last ten years and is bed-ridden for the past six years. Currently there is no

movement in his hip and knees and both needs complete replacement surgery. The approximate

cost for the surgery is 12 lacs.

The Trust has also given Geometry Boxes to thirty seven residential (ashram) students of our school,

Ramakrishna Mission Boys’ Home (H.S.) Rahara before their Class X Board Examinations. The trust

has planned to give Geometry Boxes to all residential (ashram) students of class IX and X from 2017.

APRIL 2017

Santosh Chandra Bhattacharya Memorial Trust helped to provide local area network (LAN)

connections including close circuit cameras to four laboratories (Physics, Chemistry, Biology and

Geography) of Ramakrishna Mission Boys' Home. These 2 MP cameras having good night vision

capabilities are also connected with this LAN and are accessible via internet.

SHRI SANTOSH CHANDRA BHATTACHARYA

Santosh Chandra Bhattacharya was born on 15 August, 1932 in Sylhet. His childhood was an intense

struggle to complete the studies. Without a

place to stay, without parents, he passed

Matriculation examination from

Shayestaganj High School. Afterwards, he

passed ISc from Silchar, BSc from Agartala

and lastly, completed Master’s Degree in

Applied Mathematics from University of

Calcutta. He joined Rahara Ramakrishna

Mission in 1958, as a teacher. Thus began an

epic journey of thirty-four years. As a

mathematics teacher, his fame rose to

legendary heights. But he taught something

more valuable to his students - how to think

rationally. Santoshbabu, as he was known to

generations of students, retired in 1992. But

he continued to be involved in various

educational and social activities, shunning

any glare of publicity. One of the most gifted

teachers of his generation, and more importantly a great human being, Santosh Chandra

Bhattacharya died on 7 May, 2014.

BLESSINGS

The secretary of Rahara Ramakrishna Mission Boys' Home, Swami Jayanandaji Maharaj is the mentor

to this trust. In an inspiring speech while

inaugurating http://scbmemorial.org the

website of the trust at Sri Ramakrishna

Temple in the school premises, he says "We

have many beautiful flowers in our garden,

and students are the best among them."

He encourages the trust to carry out this

work to everywhere irrespective of any

discrimination. "Share the umbrella, where

it is raining." He refers trust as Arjun of

Mahabharata. Arjun takes the pride to

describe himself as "Disciple of

Dronacharya" more than any other identity. Jayanandaji praises the idea to dedicate the Trust in the

name of our beloved teacher Shri Santosh Chandra Bhattacharya.
