HOPE AND FORGIVENESS

T here were some interesting conceptions of sin prevalent in the time of the Hebrew scriptures. There was the be-lief that God punished sin immediately. Those

who suffered disease or misfortune were, therefore, sin-ners getting their due from the Almighty. Today’s first reading hints at another kind of God. When David ad-mits his sin, Nathan declares, “The Lord on his part has forgiven your sin” (2 Samuel 12:13b). Here was not a vengeful God but a merciful God. What good news that must have been to David and those who, like him, could be honest enough to admit their sinful-ness! Jesus is the good news of God’s mercy and forgiveness incar-nate. Without Jesus, perhaps the good news would have been too good to believe, too difficult to imagine. But there he is in today’s Gospel, the God-man, forgiving a sinner and declaring that she is for-given because of her great love. There is hope, then, for the rest of us sinners, if only we love enough! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

L ast week’s “Treasure” no doubt raised an eyebrow or two with the image of the deacons scurrying through the streets of Rome, or perhaps galloping

on horseback, with fragments of eucharistic bread from the bishop’s liturgy. These would be dropped into the chalice at outlying celebrations, presided over by presbyters, to express unity with the bishop, and perhaps also to remind the presbyters that they were not free agents. The Council of Laodicea forbade the custom of the fermentum in the year 348. Gen-erally, one of the rules of interpreting law is that people don’t make laws about things that aren’t happening. So, by mid-fourth century, we have an important clue that what had once been a Roman custom had become widespread. Interestingly, when the Church of England (and its related bodies) went through a liturgical renewal in the mid-nineteenth century, they reclaimed this custom from the mists of history. Today, it is the custom in some Anglican dioceses for a fragment of the host from the bishop’s Holy Week liturgy (what we call the Chrism Mass) to be carried to every parish. On “Maundy Thursday” (our Holy Thursday), the fragment is dropped into the chalice to signify the parish’s com-munion with the bishop. This modern revival of the fermentum is differ-ent from the “co-mingling” action we are used to, in which a fragment of the consecrated bread is dropped into the chalice just before Com-munion.—Rev. PRIEST RETIREMENT FUND COLLECTION

T his weekend all parishes throughout the Arch-diocese of Los Angeles will be asked to give generously to sup-

port the Retirement Fund for the Arch-diocesan Priests. At each Mass on June 11th and 12th, a second collection will be taken to benefit this important pro-gram. Currently, the fund provides for more than 100 priests who are retired. Over the next ten years, that number is expected to increase significantly. With minimal compensation, and in many cases, no pension, these men often retire with nothing to fall back upon. Your contributions can change that. The Priest Retire-ment Fund offers us a way to give back to our Catho-lic priests who have served us so faithfully. Your con-tribution will help archdiocesan priests live modestly and peacefully in retirement. Help us offer thanks for their years of devotion to God and faithful service to our parish communities.

THE EPISTLE OF ST. JAMES CLASS

J oin Dn. Vince Crawford for a 12-week, in-depth study of the Epistle of Saint James. James chal-

lenges followers of Christ to not just “talk the talk” but to “walk the walk”. James deals with various themes including trials and temptations, understanding the relation be-tween faith and works, how to tame our tongues, be-ing a friend of God rather than a friend of the world, and the value of humility, patience and prayer. This in-depth study will meet weekly beginning Monday, June 20, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Commentary was written by Dr. Scott Hahn & Mark Shea, and the vid-eo lectures are presented by Fr. Scott Courtney. This course is being offered free of charge, but is limited to 45 seats. Please contact the parish office to regis-ter.

TEEN CONFIRMATION REGISTRATIONS

T he Santa Clara Teen Confirmation Program is a two-year process. The 2016-2017 year begins on September

7, 2016. Meetings will be held every Wednesday in the SCES Auditorium. To register for Confirmation, stop by the Parish Office with a copy of the teen’s Baptism certif-icate, a small picture of the teen, and $50 registra-tion fee (check or cash). First Year forms also availa-ble online. Second Year Confirmation Students must turn in the pink registration form along with a copy of their Baptism certificate in order to register.

I t is important to implement safety rules for kids going to summer camp. Summer camp is a time-honored tradition for kids.

Whether it’s an all-day camp or cabin sleepaway, kids can get out of the house, learn new skills, and make friends. Parents who send their kids off to camp should be sure to research the camp and the counselors who will be watching their kids. If your child is going to sleep-away camp, check in by phone or mail regularly. Ask questions and ensure that your child is safe and cared for at any camp. JUBILEE OF TEARS

O ne of the special events of this Year of Mer-cy was the "Jubilee of Tears," dedicated to all

who mourn. Pope Francis spoke on that occasion of the bitter grief of losing a loved one. He said, , “The bitterest tears…of those who have seen a loved one violently torn from them; the tears of grandparents, mothers and fathers, children; eyes that keep staring at the sunset and find it hard to see the dawn of a new day.” This brings to mind the suffering of those who have participated in some way in the death of an unborn child; parents, grandparents, friends and others. Let's remember especially those mothers who have experienced the horror of having their unborn child “violently torn from them" by abortion. Find resources for healing

ESPERANZA Y PERDÓN

H abía algunas concepciones interesantes sobre el pecado que prevalecían en la época de las Escrituras hebreas.

Estaba la creencia de que Dios castigaba inmediatamente el pecado. Los que sufrían alguna enfermedad o desgracia eran, por lo tanto, pecadores que recibían su mereci-do del Todopoderoso. La primera lectura de hoy nos muestra a otro tipo de Dios. Cuando David admite su pecado, Natán declara: “El Señor te perdo-na tu pecado” (2 Samuel 12:13b). Aquí no hay un Dios vengativo sino un Dios misericordioso. ¡Qué buena nue-va debe haber sido eso para David y para los que, como él, eran lo suficientemente honestos como para admitir su pecado! Jesús es la buena nueva de la mi-sericordia y el perdón de Dios hecho carne. Sin Jesús, quizás la buena nueva hubiera sido demasiado buena como para creerla, demasiado difícil de imaginar. Pero allí está en el Evangelio de hoy, el Dios-hombre, perdonando a una pecadora y declarando que está perdonada debido a su gran amor. ¡Hay esperanza, entonces, para el resto de nosotros pecadores, si tan sólo amamos lo suficiente! TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

E n 1910, cuatro años antes de iniciar el Día de las Madres, el pueblo de Estados Unidos empezó

a celebrar ocasionalmente un día para los padres de familia. Pero, no fue hasta 1972 que se fijó un día oficial para el papá. Poco a poco esta fecha del segundo domingo de junio se ha ido ex-pandiendo al resto del mundo con algunas excepcio-nes. En Italia por ejemplo, la fiesta del padre se ce-lebra el 19 de marzo, día de san José. Durante la Revolución Industrial del siglo diecinueve, José, espo-so de María recibió su primera fiesta oficial. La Igle-sia, preocupada por el ingreso del padre a las fá-bricas, propuso a este santo varón como ejemplo de lo que los padres deben ser en la vida de sus hijos e hijas; ejemplos de fe, ternura y trabajo. Aún en nues-tro tiempo, el Rito del Bautismo de niños insiste que el padre, junto con la madre, deben ser los mayores maestros de sus hijos. FONDO DE JUBILACIÓN PARA LOS SACERDOTES-COLLECIÓN ESPECIAL

E sta semana se pedirá a todas las parroquias a través de la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles para dar generosa-

mente para apoyar el Fondo de Jubila-ción para Sacerdotes. En cada misa el 11 de junio y 12, habrá una segunda colecta en beneficio de este importante programa. En este tiempo, el fondo ofrece apoyo a más de 100 sacer-dotes que se han jubilado. Durante los próximos diez años, se espera que el número aumente significativa-mente. Con una compensación mínima, y en muchos casos sin pensión, estos sacerdotes se retiran sin nada para mantenerse. Sus contribuciones pueden cambiar eso. El Fondo de Jubilación Para los Sacerdotes nos ofrece una manera de apoyar a nuestros sacerdotes católicos que nos han servido tan fielmente. Su contri-bución ayudará a los sacerdotes del arquidiócesis vivir modestamente y pacíficamente en la jubilación.
