MICHAEL ENGH, S.J.PRESIDENTAbout Santa Clara

Located 40 miles south of San Francisco in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley, Santa Clara University of-fers a rigorous undergraduate curriculum in the arts and sciences, business and engineering. It has nationally rec-ognized graduate and professional schools in business, law, engineering, pastoral ministries, and counseling psychology and education.

Th e 8,685-student, Catholic, Jesuit university has a 157-year tradition of educating the whole person for a life of service and leadership. Th is diverse community of scholars, characterized by small classes and a values-oriented curriculum, is dedicated to educating students for competence, conscience, and compassion.

Santa Clara University, founded in 1851 by the So-ciety of Jesus as “Santa Clara College,” is California’s oldest operating institution of higher learning. It was established on the site of Mission Santa Clara de Asís, the eighth of the original 21 California missions.

Th e college originally operated as a preparatory school and did not off er courses of collegiate rank until 1853. Following the Civil War, enrollment increased and by 1875, the size of the student body was 275. One third of the students were enrolled in the collegiate division; the remainder attended the college’s preparatory and high school departments.

Santa Clara experienced slow and steady growth dur-ing its fi rst 60 years, becoming “Th e University of Santa Clara” in 1912, when the schools of engineering and law were added. In 1925, the high school was separated from the University taking the name of Bellarmine Col-lege Preparatory in 1928.

Th e Leavey School of Business opened in 1926 and within a decade it became one of the fi rst business schools in the country to receive national accredita-tion.

For 110 years, Santa Clara was an all-male school. In 1961, women were accepted as undergraduates and San-ta Clara became the fi rst coeducational Catholic univer-sity in California. Th e number of students tripled over the next decade. Th e size of the faculty also tripled and the University began the largest building program in school history, building eight residence halls, a student union and the athletic stadium. In 1985, the University adopted Santa Clara University as its offi cial name.

Th e 106-acre campus is located in Santa Clara, Calif., at the southern tip of the San Francisco Bay, approxi-mately two miles from San Jose International Airport. Th e University enjoys a moderate climate year-round; the sun shines approximately 300 days a year. At the center of the campus is Mission Santa Clara de Asís, surrounded by the roses and palm trees of the historic Mission Gardens. Th e more than 50 buildings on campus include residence halls, two libraries, a student center and extensive athletic facilities.

After a three-year capital cam-paign that concluded in 2006, SCU was able to raise funds for major projects: a new Jesuit residence for the more than 40 Jesuit priests who serve the cam-pus as faculty and staff and live in the greater Jesuit community; a new facility for the Leavey School of Business; a larger and more comprehensive Learning Commons, Technology Center and Library, which opened in 2008 on the site of the former Orradre Library; and the Ste-phen Schott Stadium, the home of the Bronco baseball team.

Centers of DistinctionCenter for Science, Technology and Society

Th e Center for Science, Technology and Society brings a distinctive Santa Clara voice to Silicon Valley and its dynamic global audience. Its mission is to pro-mote the use of science and technology for the good of society, and to explore the relationships between these powerful forces. Th e Center off ers an undergraduate minor program for students interested in science, tech-nology and society.

Ignatian Center for Jesuit EducationDedicated to extending the core values of Santa Clara

University to the campus as a whole, the Ignatian Cen-ter’s three constituent units serve students, faculty, and staff in their studies, professions and faith. Students explore deeper meanings in their academic work and recognize their responsibility to address injustice with-in their own vocations. Th e Arrupe Partnerships, the Kolvenbach Solidarity Program and the DISCOVER program all off er academic and extracurricular oppor-tunities for students to explore social justice and global solidarity.

Markkula Center for Applied EthicsTh e Ethics Center is a place where professionals and

scholars can meet to explore the dilemmas people actu-ally face. We off er forums, research grants and a real-world laboratory for the study of theory and best prac-tices in ethics. Th e fruits of this work are available to people across the globe through the Center’s website, one of the premier destinations for ethics on the in-ternet. Th e Ethics Center is instrumental in facilitating discussions and research for students as they fulfi ll the requirements of the Core Curriculum.

A third-generation California na-tive, Michael Engh, S.J., became San-ta Clara University’s 28th president in January 2009. He is the author of Frontier Faiths: Church, Temple, and Synagogue in Los Angeles (1992) and has published extensively on the Catholic Church’s role in settling California and the history of Los An-geles.

He fi rst visited the SCU campus in 1974 as a Jesuit novice. It was visiting historic sites such as the Santa Clara Mission that fi rst drew him to the fi eld of history. His grandfather Ed-mund F. Airey, Sr., was a great story-teller, and Engh grew up hearing his accounts of California history and sharing his love of the past.

He also knew early on that he wanted to teach, from entering his very fi rst history class.

Engh graduated from what was then Loyola University of Los An-geles in 1972 and was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1981. He completed his graduate studies in the history of the American West at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1987 and began teaching at Loyola Marymount University in 1988. He was also ac-tive in founding LMU’s Th omas and Dorothy Leavey Center for the Study of Los Angeles and the university’s Center for Ignatian Spirituality.

Since taking over as the Direc-tor of Athletics and Recreation on August 27, 2004, Dan Coonan has helped take the Broncos to new heights on the fi elds, in the class-room and in the community. For his eff orts, he was recently named as one of the Bay Area’s Top 25 Sports Power Players by the Mercury News. In the past fi ve years, the Broncos have won two West Coast Confer-ence (WCC) Commissioner’s Cups, fi nishing as the runner-up twice. Th ey have won nine WCC Champi-onships, and teams or athletes from eight diff erent sports have advanced

to post-season play at least once. Nineteen Bronco teams have advanced to NCAA Championships - two reaching the Final Four, including volleyball in 2005 - the fi rst time a WCC volleyball team achieved that milestone. Two more teams reached the national quarterfi nals. Th e Broncos have had one National Player of the Year, 18 All-Americans, and seven Conference Players of the Year. Five diff erent programs have appeared at least once in the top 15 national rank-ings among Division I programs, 10 Bronco coaches have been named Coach of the Year and one was National Coach of the Year. Academically, the Broncos have also been record-setting. Cross Country captain Noelle Lopez was honored as the fi rst-ever Santa Clara female Rhodes Scholar this past year. Th is past Spring the Broncos posted an all-student-ath-lete GPA of 3.14, a new high in the department, exceeding the overall student GPA by .05 with 17 receiving perfect 4.0 GPAs and 50 achieving a 3.75 or better. Santa Clara’s graduation rates are consistently among the highest on the West Coast with the student-athletes hitting 3.0 or better the past seven of eight quarters. Coonan has challenged Bronco student-athletes to give back to their com-munity. Community service is now a central theme of the mission of the Athletic Department, mirroring the mission of the University. Bronco teams frequently take immersion trips to some of the world’s trouble spots to build homes or provide other assistance to the poor. Following his arrival on the Mission Campus, Coonan has helped energize the Bronco Bench Foundation (BBF), while re-connecting the athletic depart-ment with its roots. Under his leadership, SCU has seen a rise in contributions to the Bronco Bench, as Santa Clara continues to attempt to increase its schol-arship base. Th e Bronco Sports Magazine, unveiled in 2005, is now produced three times a year to tell the story of Santa Clara Athletics, and to keep BBF donors all over the world connected to Bronco success on the fi elds, in the classroom and in the community. School spirit is also on the rise, fueled by Coonan’s decision to move the student section for basketball to center court and by his decision to encourage the return of the student pep band. Coonan also oversaw the successful open-ing of Stephen Schott Stadium for baseball, considerably upgraded Buck Shaw Stadium through a deal with the San Jose Earthquakes, built a new synthetic turf practice fi eld with fund-raised dollars, and this past year unveiled the new Sullivan Aquatics Center courtesy of Jack and Joanie Sullivan. Th e Leavey west side bleachers were also reconstructed this past year to formalize the student section extending from baseline to baseline, and adding season-ticket chair-backs and bleachers above. Coonan came to Santa Clara from Cal, where he oversaw all aspects of foot-ball and men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball. He also managed the department’s strength and conditioning and sports medicine units as well as legal aff airs and event management. He served as the department’s primary television contact for football and basketball broadcasts, conducted a success-ful search for football coach Jeff Tedford and negotiated the institution’s fi rst multi-sport apparel and equipment contract with Nike.

Prior to Cal, Coonan worked at the Pac-10 Conference in Walnut Creek, Ca-lif., where he managed the league’s NCAA and conference rules enforcement program and oversaw the NCAA and conference governance and legislative process. He also organized the conference’s gambling issues committee and conducted campus audits and education sessions on NCAA and league rules. Prior to working for the Pac-10 Offi ce, he had stints in the Athletics Departments at Cal, Central Connecticut State and Notre Dame. A 1984 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Coonan received his law de-gree from Loyola Law School in Los An-geles in 1987, where he earned a spot on the Law Review. In his fi nal semester he clerked for Judge Cynthia Holcomb Hall on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Ninth District. After passing the California Bar exam, Coonan worked as an associate attorney for Smith & Hilbig in Torrance for fi ve years before becoming a partner at Nakahara & Lane. In 1994, he served as the fi nance director for the United States congressional campaign of Corky Larson. Coonan is the fi fth director of athletics at Santa Clara since Pat Malley took over the reigns in 1965. Since that time, Tom O’Connor (1986-92), Carroll Williams (1992-2000) and Cheryl Levick (2000-2004) have served in that role on the Mission Campus.
