The region's safety and security environment will continue to experience significant changes during the coming years:

• Maritime traffic is expected to increase, thus increasing the risk of accidents and vulnerability to pollution.

Cooperation already exists, but should be strengthened to make the region a world-leader in maritime safety and security.

PA Safe,Priority Area on Maritime Safety & Security

• Denmark and Finland serve as Priority Area Coordinators (PACs) for the Strategy´s Priority Area on Maritime Safety and Security and have undertaken to initiate projects and maintain a policy dialogue on behalf of the eight EU Member States of the Baltic Sea Region.

• The actual work is jointly carried out by the Danish Maritime Authority and the Finnish Transport Safety Agency (Trafi).

Flagship Projects () = completed project

• Conduct a technical feasibility study on a Baltic Sea Coastguard Network (Baltic Sea Maritime Functionalities Network - BSMF)

• Become a pilot region for the integration of maritime surveillance systems (Maritime Surveillance in the Northern European Sea basins – MARSUNO)

• Become a pilot region for e-Navigation (Efficient, Safe and Sustainable Traffic at Sea - EfficienSea)

• Develop a plan to reduce the number of accidents in fisheries The Baltic Sea Regional Advisory Council is the lead agent (BSRAC).

• Minimizing the risk of transporting dangerous goods by sea(Minimizing risks of maritime oil transport by holistic safety strategies, MIMIC)

• Development of Shipping Routes and e-Navigation in the Baltic Sea (MONALISA)

PA SAFE portfolio of ongoing/nearly completed projects, new projects with identified lead agents and unfunded project proposals without a lead:

• Speed up re-surveying of major shipping routes and portsThe dialogue on this project is conducted within HELCOM and the Baltic Sea Hydrographic Commission (regional structure of the IHO).

• NEW! Development of Shipping Routes and e-Navigation in the Baltic Sea (MONALISA 2)

• To create a centre for knowledge and innovation in the field of maritime safety and security (Baltic Maritime Science Park - BMSP)

• To Ensure Safe and Efficient Winter Navigation in the Baltic Sea(Winter Navigation and Motorways of the Sea, WINMOS)

• Conduct a formal risk assessment for LNG carriersLead partner is being searched for.

Potential new FS Projects:• FAMOS - Finalising Surveys for the Baltic Motorways of the Sea

• Vessel Triage - Categorization system describing the safety status of a distress vessel

• ENSI - Enhanced Navigation Support Information
