Welcome to Sanilac County, located in the Thumb of Michigan on the west shore of Lake Huron, less than a two hour drive from several of Michigan’s main metropolitan areas: Detroit, Saginaw, Bay City, Midland, Flint and Lansing; and less than an hour drive from Ontario by way of the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron.

Take advantage of over 40 miles of breathtaking Lake Huron shoreline, offering ample opportunity for a variety of water sports, from swimming and skiing to boating and fishing.

Explore the Sanilac County Underwater Preserve, comprised of 163 square miles of protected lake bottom containing numerous shipwrecks dating back as far as 1864, making it an adventure for divers.

Stroll through shoreline resort villages such as Forestville, Lexington and Port Sanilac which offer unique shopping, dining, cultural and entertainment experiences.

Visit the inland towns of Brown City, Carsonville, Croswell, Deckerville, Marlette, Peck and Sandusky where the tradition, friendliness and safety of small-town rural America combine with such amenities as one of the last remaining classic drive-in theaters in the state of Michigan, a state of the art indoor movie theater, lodging, fine and casual dining, shopping, festivals and fairs.

Delight in Amish hospitality, culinary skills and woodworking craftsmanship at roadside stands dotted throughout the countryside, while observing a lifestyle of tradition and simplicity.

Learn about Native American history at the Sanilac Petroglyphs Historic State Park, the only remaining ancient rock-carved petroglyph site in Michigan.

And, above all, revel in the greatest splendor that Sanilac County has to offer: peaceful tranquility in a pristine natural environment!

Brown CityFounded in 1881, the city of Brown City is a full service community, offering a variety of businesses and professional services. We host the annual Thumb Soybean Festival the second weekend in June. Event highlights include a carnival, classic car show, music and fireworks.

Enjoy our beautiful 76+ acre community park, filled with ball diamonds, picnic facilities, playgrounds and soccer fields. Brown City Park is also host to a “Dare Devil Dash”, an extreme 5K run through the park. To see us, take M-90 which travels through the city. The road through town is also known as Main Street. See ad page 13.Brown City Community: http://www.ci.brown-city.mi.us/

CroswellCroswell is an excellent example of Thumb Area living: friendly people of the present who take great pride in their past.

Croswell is home to a locally famous swinging footbridge built in 1905 over the Black River, which bisects the city on its way to Port Huron and the Great Lake. A folksy sign at the east end of the suspension bridge advises pedestrians to “Be Good To Your Mother-in-Law.” New in 2013, a “splash pad” has been added at the same park to cool you down on the hot summer days.

The city itself is dotted with pre-Civil War homes and buildings. Lumbering dominated Croswell until the Great Thumb Fire of 1881. Since then, agriculture has been the dominant economic activity, especially sugar beets, symbolized by the city’s iconic Pioneer Sugar plant.

The annual Croswell Fair is in June this year and features livestock exhibits and a midway full of rides. The Swinging Bridge Festival in July celebrates the upcoming harvest with a Cardboard Regatta on the Black River. See ads on page 6 & 44.

Croswell Community: http://www.cityofcroswell.com/ Croswell Events: http://www.cityofcroswell.com/

DeckervilleDeckerville takes its name from Charles Decker, who launched a lumber business here in 1870. Decker’s son, Martin, became the settlement’s first postmaster that same year. Deckerville incorporated as a village in 1893 and to this day is home to a number of Charles’ descendents.

Located just 6 miles from the Lake Huron shoreline, Deckerville has several shops and restaurants, as well as a full-service hospital and library available for campers and resorters.

During the summertime, visitors can take a dip in the village’s outdoor pool or roll a few balls at the local bowling alley. In August, past and present villagers gather for the Deckerville Homecoming festival, which features a tractor pull, parade, fireworks and many more activities. Don’t forget about their Santa’s Reindeer Event in December. Come celebrate the change of seasons in Deckerville! See ad page 13.

LexingtonWhen Lexington was founded in 1835, it became the first outpost north of Port Huron. Eleven years later, Reuben Diamond named the village after the Battle of Lexington, in which his wife’s cousin, Ethan Allen, fought during the Revolutionary War.

The Cadillac Hotel has stood at the heart of village life since its days as a log hotel from 1840 to 1860, when it was rebuilt following a fire. Steamships and freighters made regular stops at the port of Lexington for lumber and agricultural products until the Great Storm of 1913 destroyed the village’s long dock into Lake Huron. Lexington is now noted for its many Victorian homes and historic buildings filled with shops, restaurants and bed-and-breakfasts.

With its handful of pretty parks and its quaint downtown, the village is the summertime host of the Music in the Park Series, ThumbFest, the Lexington Art Fair and the annual Bach Festival. Protected by a limestone seawall, Lexington’s picturesque marina doubles as an official State of Michigan Harbor of Refuge. Its beach offers visitors a chance to kick back and enjoy the summer. Nearby golf courses, a bike trail to Croswell, seasonal hunting spots, abundant fishing and a thriving cottage culture make Lexington a vacation mini-mecca. See ads page 7.

MarletteMarlette, located in the heart of Michigan’s Thumb, was first settled in the mid-1800’s by Canadians lured by the tall timber and fertile soil of the area. The lumber industry gave way to farming after the Great Thumb Fire of 1881, with sugar beets, soy beans and corn dominating production today.

A large Amish community gives the countryside around Marlette the aura of a bygone era, complete with horse-drawn buggies and outlets selling produce, furniture and baked goods.

The friendly city offers a handful of recreational options, including a challenging nine-hole public golf course, a community swimming pool, various agri-tourism opportunities and a playground. One of the biggest employers in the area is Marlette Regional Hospital.

Visitors to Marlette may stay in a bed-and-breakfast, stroll the small-town shopping district and enjoy a casual meal far from the hustle and bustle of the big city. See ad page 12.

Port SanilacThe village now known as Port Sanilac was founded in the early 1840’s by lumbermen who erected a shelter close enough to the beach that it could be seen by passing Great Lakes sailors. The sailors christened the settlement after its appearance – “Bark Shanty Point.”

In 1857, the residents officially changed the name of their hometown to Port Sanilac. By then, the village was in full swing. A saw mill, schoolhouse and general store opened in the late 1840’s. In 1850, Raymond Hardware opened – and never closed: it is currently the oldest continuously operated hardware store in Michigan.

The blue water of Lake Huron and its sandy beaches have always been Port Sanilac’s chief attractions. The Port Sanilac Lighthouse began illuminating the local waters in 1886 and has been a popular tourist destination ever since. The village’s Harbor of Refuge offers 32 seasonal slips and 35 transient slips as well as a convenient diving launch-site for the Sanilac Shores Underwater Preserve, which encompasses 163 square miles of protected lake bottom featuring shipwrecks dating back to 1864.

Port Sanilac is also home to the Barn Theatre and Sanilac County Historic Village and Museum, a 10-acre campus that showcases eight historical buildings, a variety of musical concerts, and welcomes visitors to explore our heritage through events throughout the seasons. The Port Sanilac Community features both casual and fine dining, a deep harbor with all amenities, downtown shopping, and a vibrant cottage culture.

Port Sanilac Community: http://www.portsanilac.net/ Port Sanilac Events: http://www.portsanilac.net/

SanduskySandusky, located 15 miles inland from Port Sanilac at the intersection of M-46 and M-19, is the county seat of Sanilac County. Sandusky offers all the services and resources you’d expect from a much larger city: top-notch medical care, a variety of shopping opportunities, lodging, dining, up-to-date library, excellent law enforcement, emergency services and more. Farming and industry combine to make Sandusky an honest, hard working, progressive and safe community.

Sandusky has many recreational opportunities and is a beehive of activity. It is home to the annual Michigan Thumb Festival in June, the Sanilac County 4-H Fair in August and popular Original Country Christmas Lighted Farm Implement Parade in December.

Sandusky boasts the only tri-plex movie theater in the county as well as a bowling alley, basketball courts, fully handicap accessible playground in its city park and a public golf course. In the surrounding area, the farmland provides ample hunting opportunities throughout the year as well as many miles of snowmobile trails. See ads page 10.

Carsonville, Applegate, Argyle, Melvin, Minden City, Forester, Forestville, Peck, SnoverScattered throughout Sanilac County are several smaller communities, each with its own history and each with its unique attractions. Carsonville, for example, was founded in 1853 by Silas Hall and was known as Hall’s Corners until 1884 when businessman Arthur Carson renamed the settlement.

A bar in Applegate serves up some of the best pizza in the county. In Peck, you can find a hardware store straight out of the 1950’s as well as a Career Center just north of town, the Sanilac Intermediate School District.

With each community having their own identity, all of them still share the small-town friendliness and helpfulness that are common throughout Sanilac County.

Sanilac County boasts more than just a shoreline; it is full of agricultural tourism opportunities as well. Contrary to many people’s impression of farming as a simple operation, modern agriculture is a high tech business which uses massive equipment. Drive down Sanilac County roads in the spring planting or fall harvest seasons and be amazed at farm machinery in the fields that can be 20-30 feet wide and 20 feet high. These huge tractors, combines, sprayers, planters and pickers are working to produce the food you have on your dining room table.

The Sanilac County countryside is also following a national trend of “windmill planting”. Drive to the north side of the county on Ruth Road near Deckerville, and be awed by the newly erected wind turbines’ slowly moving arms turning in the breeze. These are truly a sight to behold.

And, in the fall, put the hustle and bustle of the city behind you; pick your way through our corn mazes, pumpkin patches and apple orchards with your family on a crisp, clear day; breathe in the fresh, bright air that can be found only along country roads; and treat your eyes to the beauty of rolling hills and cattle grazing in the distance. Let Sanilac County seep into your pores and quiet your heart. For a few moments, a few hours, or a few days, come share with us the splendor of rural living.

Port Sanilac Harbor Public Access/BeachLocated at the north side of the breakwall in Port Sanilac, is a public area that is used for a beach.

SailingWhether your sailboat is your “cottage on the lake” or your “one design racer”, sailing has been rooted in Port Sanilac since the harbor was built in 1951. With the addition of a second Harbor of Refuge located in Lexington in 1975, sailing has become a popular recreation activity for vacationing mariners and local sailors alike in Sanilac County.

The Sanilac shoreline has become an excellent vantage point for viewing the legendary Port Huron to Mackinaw Yacht Race. This race, held in July each summer, has become more of a spectator sport than ever. The new race course has the 300 boat fleet hugging the shoreline. The spectacular scene of colorful spinnakers contrasted against the deep blue waters of Lake Huron are a sight that postcards and vacation memories are made of.

Local Port Huron Racing Federation (PHRF) boat racing is held from late May through late September. The Bark Shanty Sail Club hosts theses races along with an annual Lake Huron Yachting Association regatta.

FishingWith the ice breakup in late March comes the excitement of early spring fishing. The water is still cold and it gives the angler an advantage for finding trout, salmon or steelhead. The fish seek the warm water of the stream runoff and are close to shore. Shallow water fishing is most productive. Most fishing tournaments are run in May and early June.

As the water warms, the big fish go deep and offshore. By late June the perch start coming in. Perch populations have grown in recent years. The DNR reports that the Sanilac area has been an anomaly for perch count. Perch fishing in the past couple of years has stayed strong right into the fall when the salmon and trout run. The fall months bring the spawning season. Brown trout are frequently caught near streams and harbor entrances.

In September and October of 2008, the DNR expanded their fish plantings out of Port Sanilac. A fish count completed at that time showed a good cross section of species in the twenty to forty foot depth contour.

DivingSince the shipwreck discovery of the steamer “Regina” in the 1980’s, recreational diving has exploded along the Sanilac shoreline. There are over 14 different wrecks within an hour of Port Sanilac or Lexington.

Water clarity has dramatically increased in Lake Huron over the past 15 years. It is not uncommon to hear reports of 75 foot visibility. Deep and shallow water dives are equally rewarding.

With all the interest generated by the many wrecks of the Great Storm of 1913, the Sanilac Underwater Preserve was formed to protect these wrecks from treasure hunters and salvagers.

Commercial dive charters operate out of both Lexington and Port Sanilac harbors. Compressed air and dive supplies are available in Port Sanilac. Several Detroit metropolitan area dive shops organize dive trips to the Thumb area.

KayakingKayaking along the shores of Lake Huron is gaining in popularity. The clean, clear water; the calm, soothing action of the waves; and the beauty of the shoreline all combine to give the novice or experienced kayaker a refreshing experience. Take the opportunity to explore isolated beaches easily accessible from the water. Now with the introduction of the Tip of the Thumb Heritage Water Trail linking Saginaw Bay, around Lake Huron through the southern tip of Sanilac County, distances between landings can be as little as a mile or less. Visit thumbtrails.com for more info. See map, page 25.

Farm Markets provide emotional as well as nutritional ingredients to a person’s life. According to Lewis (2013), farm markets can improve your sense of well-being through the feeling of community that is often generated at a farmer’s market. As a tourist in Sanilac County, you can get an impression for the makeup of the community, and you can share in the close-knit atmosphere that is part of rural living.

For instance, in the two weekly farm markets that take place in Sanilac County, you can catch a glimpse of life in Port Sanilac, a small resort town along the shore of Lake Huron, with a population of just over 600, or in Sandusky, Sanilac’s county seat, with a population of nearly 2800.

In both communities, everyone is considered a neighbor, whether you live within the village or city limits, in the surrounding townships, or are simply passing through on a vacation.

Become a part of the rich tapestry of rural life, if just for the time that you are shopping at the Farm Market. Take part in the conversations that surround you, and revel in the warm friendliness that naturally emanates from people who feel a connection to everyone around them.

Of course, not to be outdone by the emotional benefits of shopping at Sanilac County Farm Markets, is the opportunity to purchase fruits, vegetables and other delectable goods from local producers, many of whom use organic methods to grow their crops! Port Sanilac’s Farm Market is located on M-25, just north of the Fire Hall, and is open late May 10 through November 1, on Fridays. The Farm Market then opens Saturdays from June 15 to September 14. For more information, visit them at www.portsanilac.net. Sandusky’s Farm Market is located on M-46, at the edge of the Sanilac County Courthouse Lawn and is open May 10 – October 31.

If your desire is to obtain the freshest farm products possible, consider visiting one of our pick-your-own berry farms or orchards.

McCallum’s Orchard, Cider Mill and Winery is located at 5697 Harris Road, Jeddo, at the southern border of Sanilac County. They plan to open for the season on May 1 and have a wide variety of U-pick or Already-picked fruit available, such as apples, cherries, raspberries, blackberries, peaches, grapes and pumpkins in season.

McCallum’s also holds a Kids’ Day and Pumpkin Festival in the fall. In addition, they can host your next conference, barbeque, party or trade fair on their grounds. Check out their website, www.mccallumorchard.com, or call 810-327-6394 for more information.

Near Port Sanilac, Messing Menagerie Farm welcomes you, specializing in naturally raised cattle and organic vegetables. At the Menagerie Farm you can order pork, beef or goat, or visit their self-serve roadside produce stand, open in May for the asparagus season, and continuing through the summer and fall with a seasonal election of corn, beans, tomatoes, squash and pumpkins, to name just a few.

Or try Bingle Berry Farm, on Marlette Road, just outside of Croswell, open July and August, specializing in blueberries and blackberries. While in Croswell, also check out the Croswell Berry Farm on N. Black River Road for blueberries and blackberries.

A blueberry farm not to be missed is the Green Thumb Blueberry Farm just east of Sandusky on Stringer Road. Specializing in both picked and U-pick blueberries and raspberries, they also offer a wide variety of vegetables in season as well, including peppers, sweet corn, beans and tomatoes. Also near Sandusky, on N. Stoutenburg Road, is Kurt Long’s Garden, open in June for strawberries and other produce.

West of Sandusky, on Wheeler Road in Snover, visit Thistledown Farms to purchase produce and to observe the day to day operations of an organic processing plant. Tours are available by calling ahead: 810-672-9496. And, in the northern part of the county, don’t miss the Kritzman Berry Farm, on Brush Street in Deckerville, offering strawberries during the season of May and June.

In the southwest part of the county, just south of Marlette on M-53, visitors will find the Volz Market. Open year-round, Volz’s carries farm fresh produce in season as well as groceries, bulk foods and gardening/yard supplies.

WineriesIn addition to farm fresh food production, Sanilac County has a burgeoning wine-making industry!

Blue Water Winery located at 7131 Holverson Road south of Port Sanilac hosts on-site wine tasting throughout the season and offers a grape picking event in the fall. For the full list of their wines and their hours of operation, check out their website: www.bluewaterwinery.com, or call them at 810-359-5012. Look for their wines being served in several Sanilac County restaurants, or visit their retail shop, Old Town Hall Winery in

Lexington, specializing in wine tastings, wine sales, food, and live musical entertainment year round.

Located inside the Orchard Market at McCallum’s Orchard is Sandy Shores Winery. This winery features several varieties of wine made from the types of fruit they produce, such as apple, blackberry, pear blanco, cherry, peach, and concorde grape.

So, when you’re tired of soaking up the sun and surf at one of Sanilac County’s beaches, enjoy another aspect of Sanilac County that makes us such a wonderful place to visit: our Farm Markets, Orchards and Wineries!Reference: Lewis, L (2013). No entertainment is as simple, inexpensive, and memorable as taking your family on a road trip. We invite you to visit Sanilac County and experience all we have to offer in every season of the year. In the spring, begin with a breath taking cruise on M-25 along Lake Huron. Bring a picnic to enjoy at Lexington Park. Walk on the beach, collect shells and stones, listen to the gentle lapping of the waves, watch massive cargo ships slip quietly by, and savor the scenery. Depending on how early you’re visiting in the spring, icebergs may be drifting and melting offshore: a perfect photographic opportunity.

The summer months offer many of the same pleasures as spring. Picnics, family rides, hiking, swimming, boating, spectacular views of the lake, fishing and hunting are all available in Sanilac County. Many local campgrounds offer a rustic place to stay and have cabins for the frontiersman in you. If your pleasure is simply sitting around the fire to visit with friends and neighbors, this is the place to be! Motels are located in Sandusky for those of us wanting to enjoy a more traditional comfort; and many Sanilac County communities offer Bed and Breakfast accommodations, for a homey, natural experience.

Take time to appreciate the farmers as they work fields and plant crops; and take advantage of the fact that Sanilac County ranks #1 in Michigan for the production of many agricultural commodities. A great way to see the fields is to drive the country roads on an Off Road Vehicle (ORV)! A new ORV Ordinance in Sanilac County allows the maintained portion of most county roads to be used for ORV and ATV traffic.

Because this is an agricultural county, you can find great variety, quality, and deals at the Farmers Markets in Port Sanilac and Sandusky. Treat yourself to fresh picked fruits, vegetables, flowers, and many other farm commodities produced by local growers. Or stop at any of the many roadside stands scattered throughout the county.

The trees are alive with color in the fall. Miles of intense color are there for your pleasure. A gorgeous view can be found around every turn and in the next mile: truly nature at its finest. The farmers are harvesting their fields; and this is a sight not to be missed. The massive machines devour grain by the truckload. Fishing peaks again in the fall with runs of trout and salmon. And, if you enjoy deer hunting, this is the place to be!

Winter is exceptional in Sanilac County, with groomed snowmobile trails, hockey for all ages, cross-country skiing, rabbit hunting, and photographic opportunities available, to name just a few. Many Sanilac County communities offer family friendly winter festivals, starting in December and lasting all season.

So, no matter the season, come and enjoy the beauty and hospitality Sanilac County has to offer!
