An (Extra)Ordinary ExperienceAs a supplement to my full time job, I have started working at St. Martins homeless shelter a fewmornings a week. Even though I have only been there for a month or so, I already feel at home there. Iam meeting so many new people and making all sorts of great connections with both the staff and theclients there.

I just wanted to share one of my experiences from the past week there. Its an

experience that I know I will remember for a long time.

Wednesday morning, when I got ready to leave St. Martins and head over tomy other job at Escuela, I was walking my bike out of the parking lot when Iheard an awful noise coming from my bike. I looked down to see that, not onlyhad my chain come off, but it had somehow been wrapped around my pedalseveral times. Now those of you that know me know that I know absolutelynothing about bikes. I bent down to try and fix my bike, while acting like Iknew what I was doing, but I think I only managed to make the problem worse.

I was running late for work and I knew I should go find an employee to helpme, but my stubborn pride kept me from asking. At that point, two of the

homeless clients who had been relaxing outside of the shelter came over andasked if they could help. I said sure, and within two minutes they had my bikegood as new! Then theysent off, yelling Drive carefullyand God bless as Irode away.

At the time, I was very grateful for their kind assistance, but I didnt think too much of it. But as Icontinued to think about it, I realized that coming into the morning, I had my mind set that I would bethe one to help others. I was the do-gooder who was volunteering my time to help a demographicthat I often view as helpless. Yet they were the ones who had served me that morning!

Page 5 Service Adventure NewsI know this is not an amazingly amazing story or a miracle or anything like that, but in its own way itsan experience that has shaped the way I think about service. I am not the person who is going to savethe world or make a big impact. I dont have all the answers. In fact, the people I serve often give backas much to me as I give to them.
