C. COURSES DEVELOPED OR INNOVATIONS IN EXISTING COURSES
* Fall 2012. In EDX 8393, Seminar in Emotional/Behavioral Disorders, I
integrated information that I learned while on sabbatical in Sicily concerning
services for students with Autism in that country.
* Summer 2012. In EDX 8780, Internship is Special Education, once again
organized Camp Jigsaw, a camp for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
This year, students stayed on campus in a dorm for one week. Self-determination
skills training, social skills training, and pivotal response training were used
to maximize skill development. The students enrolled in the courses raised
over $6,000.00 to make camp a reality.
* Summer 2012. In EDX 8213, Practicum and Remediation in Special Education,
students worked in groups to burn CD’s of intervention strategies for children
with reading, mathematics, social skills, writing, and behavioral deficits. All
interventions were empirically based methods that the students researched. At the
end of the course, students exchanged CD’s. It was intensive work but each
came away with interventions that they could utilize in their classrooms
3
immediately.
Summers 2010 and 2011. In EDX 8070 Internship in Special Education,
students designed and implemented a camp for adolescents with Aspergers/High
Functioning Autism. Camp Jigsaw involved Mississippi State University
graduate students and the campers in the teaching of self-determination through a
virtual environment, social skills through pivotal response training for the
development of social skills with typical peers, and the development of transition
skills through the use of video- taped pre-teaching and social stories.
Summers 2008- 12. In EDX 8133 Readings and Research in Special Education,
students were required to submit a grant for their school districts for
materials/supplies from either a state or federal source. These monies were to be
designated primarily for special needs students but could also benefit their home
schools or districts.
Spring of 2007. Integrated two courses with Dr. Harrison Kane (School
Psychology). Students enrolled in both Teaching Individuals with Emotional and
Behavioral Disorders (EDX 8403) and Integrated Assessment (EPY 9723) were
required to work hands-on in a public school setting under both of our
supervision. Students were engaged in intelligence testing, academic assessment,
personality assessment, behavioral assessment and produced an assessment report
and intervention plan as the final product.
Summer of 2005. Developed and taught a new course entitled Special Education
Law (EDX 8990). The course was taught as a weekend college and commenced in
the spring semester to accommodate students working full time during the day.
Feedback from students taking the course was excellent. As Special Education
Law continues to change, it is imperative that such a course be offered to students
not only in Special Education but in School Psychology and Counselor Education.
Summers of 2003 and 2004. Participated in an educational program in Belize,
Central America. Collaborated with members of the Council for Exceptional
Children’s International Division to develop and implement workshops for
parents and teachers of students in Corozol and in Dangrigia. The workshops
focused on differentiated instruction, behavior management, community based
instruction and multi-cultural special education.
Fall of 2003. Revised the schedule of Special Education in the Regular Classroom
(EDX 8173) to a weekend college format. The revised schedule better met the
needs of practicing teachers and those who commute from long distances to take
graduate level classes.
Fall of 2002. Redesigned EDX 8173, Special Education in the Regular Classroom
to meet the needs of students outside of Special Education. The course was added
to the newly developed Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program at
4
Mississippi State University and included students from various disciplines
(agriculture, English, elementary education, science, counseling and school
psychology).
Fall of 2002. Revamped EDX 8393, Seminar in Emotional/Behavioral Disorders,
to include Problem-Based Learning as part of the activities for the course.
Spring of 2001. Collaborated with the Millsaps Vocational Center to allow
students enrolled in EDX 4133, Diagnostic- Prescriptive Methods and Materials
for Secondary Age Disabled to work with students with disabilities enrolled at the
vocational center. Students were responsible for assessments, curricular
modifications and lesson plan development for the semester.
Summer of 1997. Collaborated with Dr. Linda Morse (Educational Psychology)
to combine courses required for gifted certification into a block experience.
Students met from 8:00-12:00 each day and courses were integrated to include
competencies from Psychology of the Gifted (EPY 8293) and Teaching Strategies
for the Gifted (EDX 8163).
Spring of 1996. Collaborated with the Special Education faculty to offer an 18-
hour block experience for Senior Special Education majors. Students met from
8:00-12:00 each day and courses were integrated to include competencies from
the Special Education methods courses, the Educational Foundations planning and
managing course and the Educational Psychology evaluating course. The block
also included a class on assistive technology and working with parents. All
classes were field-based.
Academic year of 1995-96. Collaborated with the Special Education faculty to
increase the credit hours for gifted certification from 6 to 12. Two existing
courses, Readings and Research in Special Education and Internship in Special
Education were adopted to include personalized study in the area of gifted
education.
Spring of 1995. Students enrolled in EDX 4133, Diagnostic and Prescriptive
Methods and Materials for Secondary Students with Disabilities, participated in a
television workshop for the Satellite Education Resources Consortium Project.
Students enrolled in the course, along with Starkville High School personnel
discussed academic and social skill building in adolescents. This was a two-hour
live interactive program.
Fall of 1994. The Psychology of Exceptional Children and Youth (EDX 4223)
and Individualizing Instruction (EDC 4113) courses were expanded to include a
two hour practicum per week for each student enrolled. The students were
provided the opportunity of working in their content area with elementary or
secondary students with diverse learning or behavioral styles. Practicum students
5
participated in modifying curriculum, developing alternative teaching strategies
and employing various behavioral techniques as needed.
Summer of 1993. Revised the format of a graduate course, Teaching Strategies
for the Gifted. For the first time, the three hour course offered a practicum in the
form of an enrichment camp for local students identified as gifted. During a
weekend, MSU students had the opportunity to work “hands-on” with gifted
fourth graders from the Starkville Public School District. The MSU students
developed activities and materials that provided enrichment for the gifted
students. MSU students and the gifted participants clocked 90 hours engaged in
intensive study during the enrichment camp. Each summer, the topic for the
enrichment camp changes.
Fall of 1991. Modified the curriculum of Individualizing Instruction (EDC 4113),
a class designed for non-special education majors) to include collaboration with
Very Special Arts Mississippi. Since that time, pre-service teachers enrolled in
EDC 4113 have had the opportunity to develop and then implement learning
stations during area Very Special Arts festivals. The stations focused on drama,
visual art, music or dance. In many cases, this experience is the only real contact
EDC 4113 students have with children with disabilities prior to student teaching.
