SVA GRADUATES
READY FOR COLLEGE
Our five-year trend data is in from ACT. Praise God! 80% of our students who
have taken the ACT in the past five years are predicted to be ready for college English composition. We
attribute the 25% increase to a strong and rigorous emphasis on grammar and vocabulary instruction in
addition to the Christ-centered emphasis in the literary curriculum we utilize. Mrs. Addriene Rhodes,
former SVA English teacher of three years, took ENG 464-Advanced Grammar from Dr. Lauie at SWAU
the summer of 2013. Mrs. Rhodes began the 2013-2014 school with a new respect for grammar to say
the least. Great job and kudos to Mrs. Rhodes and to our students who took their ACT test last year!
This is the fourth year that SVA’s five year ACT scores trend has placed our students scoring above
the state and national averages in ALL subjects! College social sciences scores went up 23%. Ms.
Yvette Chacon, our history teacher, attributes the increase to the utilization of critical thinking, higher
level thinking, life application of historical facts

Patriot’s Day – Day of Service SVA students (L-R) Lucy C, Karina G, Gyla T, Josh W,
Rachel S and Teacher Yvette Chacon with the “thank
you” cards they made for 1st responders in Rio Rancho
WHERE WERE YOU ON
SEPTEMBER 11, 2001?
Students attending high school today were one to five
years old on the day the Twin Towers fell in New York
City after the terrorist attacks. They don’t remember
watching the news and seeing the horrific scenes
unfold. They do know something bad happened that
day.
September 11 is a National Day of Remembrance and
Service. It is a day set aside in memory of those who
were injured or died on that day. It is also a day to
remember those 1st responders who died from or are
presently suffering with the illnesses and diseases
related to the toxic chemicals they were exposed to
during the recovery efforts on that day.
At school, for SVA students, this year’s September 11
began with a video. For some it was the first time they
were introduced to the timeline of the fateful day in
2001. For some it was the first time they viewed
footage of the 2nd airplane crashing into the north
tower. For some it was the first time they learned of
Flight 93 that crashed in Philadelphia after the brave
passengers took it back from terrorists. For all it was a
somber reminder of how fragile life is and how brave
God calls us to be.

1st Responders in Rio Rancho
Each month SVA students go into the surrounding
communities and serve. September 11, 2014, one
group of students went to Fairwinds Assisted Living to
sing and visit with residents there. Another group of
students went to Taylor Middle School and cleared out
the abundance of weeds that had grown up around
the school from all the rain. One group of students
made patriotic thank you cards for 1st responders
while another group of students made and baked
cookies at the home of alumnus, Molly Evans.
The cookies and cards were delivered to the firemen
of Rio Rancho Fire Station House #1. Students were
taken on a tour of the fire station where they learned
what different fire trucks can do, the importance of
fitness, the benefits of a fire fighting career and the
intricacies of making good firehouse coffee.

MEET OUR NEW TEACHER
Ms. Melissa Muñoz is teaching English, religion for underclassman,
yearbook, PE, health and will be helping with coaching basketball and
volleyball. With a masters degree from Texas Women’s University in
Kinesiology with an emphasis in coaching; a bachelor of science degree
from Southwestern Adventist University in Physical Education with four
minors in English, Religion, History and Spanish, Ms. Muñoz has
already proven to be an asset to our program.
Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Ms. Muñoz’s favorite books are The Count
of Monte Cristo, Anne Frank, Sum It Up by Pat Summit. Her hobbies are playing sports, working out,
coaching and eating-specifically Chinese and Italian food. If you are going to invite her over for dinner,
make sure it’s NOT spicy!!! She likes roller coasters, “texting my Boo” and watching tv shows. One
look at her Mac book will tell you she is a Stars Wars Fan.
Her dream is to be a university kinesiology professor and university-level basketball and volleyball
coach. When asked if she likes teaching at SVA, she answered, “Yes is I do. It has truly been a
blessing from both students and staff. I’m truly happy to be here.”
We’re happy to have Ms. Muñoz join our staff and SVA family.
Interview conducted by
freshman, Gyla T
The Questions 1. What community service
project did you participate with?
2. What was your favorite part of Service Day?
3. Why do you think it is important for young people to help others and do community service?
4. If you could talk directly to a 1st responder about the job they do for our community, what would you say?
Cindy R, Sophomore 1- I sang at a nursing home. 2- My favorite part was going to the fire station. 3- I think it is important because once you get older it
would be easier to help people in need. You won’t have to be asked to help people in need.
4- I would say your job is really inspiring because you put your life on the line. Thank you!
Josh W, Junior 1- I made cards for people. 2- Seeing what the firefighters do on a daily basis. 3- So they (young people) have moral views about what
happens around them. 4- Thank you for everything that you do for everyone.
Annette M, Junior 1- I was at Taylor Middle School cleaning. 2- The break was nice, but it was good to work as a team
with my fellow friends, cleaning up. 3- It’s nice to help others and become one community. 4- You’re very brave for what you do. Thank you!
