    EXTENDING THE VISIONwhich began in central Brazil

    From it s beginning, th e Brazil Christian Mission has hada vision of ministering to th e whole man. After Starla JoySanders de Azevedo graduated from th e Brasilia ChristianCollege, she became active in social services and philanthropicwork w ith t he Brazil Chris tian Mis si on . Soo n others begancooperatingwi th themission to set up a strong, national self-support ing social service and education work the INTEGRATED LIFE PROJECT. Abigail Mescjuita served a s i ts firstpresident and later, when she became il l and moved back tohe r city of origin, Recife, Starla Jo y became president of th eproject, then later became executive secretary an d coordinator. I t w as at th is t ime that Starla was se t apart as a missionary by th e local Christian church in Brasilia.

    THE CHALLENGE WAS GIVEN. . AND ACCEPTED: --

    In January 1993, with a new completely Brazilian directory in charge of the INTEGRATED LIFE PROJECT in Brasilia,and after much prayer and discussion, Starla Joy andhe r husband. Luiz Carlos, and their family felt it was the Lord's willfo r them t o move t o the northeas t . . . to Recife . . . to EXTENiiTHE VISION

    In Northeast Brazil, in th e S ta te o f Pemambuco, part ofth e suffering world, t he re a re twelve c i ties tha t make up th egreat metropolitan area of th e state's capital, RECIFE. Since1990, Abigail, in spi te of very UI health, had star ted a workamong the street children in Recife (Association For th e Re storation ofMan) and needed help. Lulz Carlos, Starla and theirfamily drove to Recife in March 1993 and began working withAbigail and Nubia (Abigail's daughter), restructuring and enlarging th e project for more and better service as well as working in th e n ew church. When Abigail passed away in 1994,Starla became pres ident of the Association, with Nubia, a

Theirmother cannotkeep them and, according to Brazilian law, they cannot stayIn an institution for too long except on an emergency basis.They ar e hoping t o ge t an authorization from th e children sJudge to keep them, so If they cannot be adopted, they ca n atleast have a Christian home i n th e Association.     Paulo and Karine are also candidates for adoption. Theirmother left them with a neighbor who has mental problemsand then d isappeared . Another neighbor s en t them t o th eAssociation for protection from their stepfather, who i s an alcoholic and ha s abu sed them. Karine has a growth problem.Though 9 years old, she is th e size of a 5-year-old. She is taki ng test s and exams to see what ca n be done.

    Wagner lAarques is 11 years old. His twin brother, Walter,Is going through several kinds of heart exams. He will poss ibly need major hear t s ii rgery. Of sweet disposition, he is always smiling and hel pi ng . He s ing s i n th e vocal group andreceived a scholarship to learn to play th e guitar.

    ceived from a Christ ian friend i n t he USA. These T-shirts werespecially painted for a dramatization t ha t t he children werepresenting. The employees of 0 A (a national clothingdepartment store) are helping to s ta r t a paper recycling factory. They have formed a Foundation to help social serviceenti t ies . The Associat ion is one of the few evangelical institutions who are he lped an d respected as an institution whichactual ly changes these children.

    with new churches in Evangelism, helping them t o becomeself-supporting, self-governing and self-propagating.     Very few of these children in the Association or their famil ies know th e Lord as a f r iend Mos t o f t h em have neve r he a r dabout Jesus. In vis it ing some of the homes, they have foundseveral families who put up boards, cardboard boxes, cloth,wood and buil t shacks under a very la rge bridge. Each shackis connected to anothe r There a re more t h an 20 unde r t h a tbridge. When steppingout of th e on e room in which they live,they are on the street of th e bus stat ion. There is no runningwater , no lights, except th e l ight in th e streets and the wateris what comes from rain an d gathers in a poolwhere th emothwan d older sisters wash clothes and where they al l bathe.

    Three colleges ar e functioning and twocampus extension courses are in formation.

    National leaders are excitedabout plantin g new churches. In Brasilia, four newchurches wereplantedin the last 12 months.

    This new year, we (David and Ruth) visited the annual Youth Congress held atCamaval time in Goiania, where there are 30 churches of Christ. At this time, we alsovisited missionary Earl Haubner and the new church in construction. A survey wasmade to report on ministers and church growth. We hope to have this report real soon,including new churches in 1994. , ,As missionaries, we feel a new tranquility among the churches and nejoice in a

    Reports were puhlished of tremendous growth in the last five years with anestimated total of 20,000 members in all Brazil. There are various RestorationMovements with an unestimated growth. One is a non-instrumental group, andanother is a Community Christian church.Our big event of the year was that Christian College in Brasilia graduated 29students on December 8, 1994. Fifteen received 4 year Bachelor degrees in Theologyand fourteen received certificates for the 2 year leadership course by extension. Therewere around 450 who attended th e graduating exercises in the B ra silia Church. A newextension campus was opened in Rio de .Taneiro (area of Teresopolis) by PhilipMcAfee and another branch has also opened in Recife (1500 miles away).Recife Report - Staria Toy and Luiz Carlos* Family health conditions ar e more stabilized* Many adjustments have been made to live in high temperature and desert-like

    suffocating climate, even though close to the ocean.* Staria and Luiz Carlos sold their home in Brasil ia and purchased a home in asuberb of Recife - Candeias (Jaboatao dos Guararapes) to work with the streetChildren along with Abigail Mesquita (Luiz Carlos'sister). With the death of Abigail,Staria was called to the presidency of the Association of human development - caringfor the homeless hildren o f th e s tr eets . 13Q hildren were m tr i u l ted in 1995.Because of the difficulty of housing and t ransportat ion, they travel by bus some 10 mileswith n added five blocks to walk. The small auditorium of the home also servestemporarily as a church building. The location is in the much dete riated area in thecenter of the old city.* L. David and Ruth visited Recife especially for the wedding of Kyula .lane andJohn Alberto in January, 1995. They also attended church services while there andinitiated theological studies with the voung preacher who began as minister-evangelist inthe struggling local church. He works in computer analysis in a bank and began amin is try when the church was divided.Hopes and Plans

    The ministering counsel of the churches of Christ represented byi ts secretary Evaldo Fernandas a preacher of a daughter church in Guara ,and by Manuel Marinho Sena minister of evangelism and missions in theBrasil ia church presented the Sanders with a congratulatory plaque inhonor of their golden wedding anniversary and their fai thfulness inministry of the churches of Christ . Osorio Gonsalves Rodrigues rectorof Christian College and planter of two new churches in the new sate l i tecity of Samambaia, led in a prayer of praise and thanksgiving for thel ives of the couple. Robert Fife missionary to Portugal and son ofThomas Fife gave a his tor ica l sketch of this f i f ty year period.     Special music was presented by ensemble groups from duets and solosfrom the local congregation and various surrounding churches in boththe English and Portuguese languages. After the worship-celebrationservice the ladies of the Bras i l i a church shared inproviding anddis t r ibu t ing refreshments including a delicious 80 pound coconut cakebaked by Selma Macedo, disciple of former missionary Art Carter.

    The Sanders plan to continue l iv ing and serving in Brazi l asopportunity and strength permit. They express the i r grat i tude to a l lb r e t h r e n and churches who have made t h i s so po s s i b l e .
