SAND TESTING PREPARATION

1

Introduction

Objective

This experiment measures the sand grain size and calculates the Grain Fineness Number (GFN)

Materials

i. Silica sand

Equipment

i. 1 set of 9 sieves ( 53, 75, 106, 150, 212, 300, 425, 600, 850) plus the sieves panii. Sieve shaker

iii. Digital Scale Balance

Hand tools

i. Brush

Procedure

a. The screens on the sieves were cleaned carefully by turning the sieve face down and striking the rim evenly on the table. The screen cannot be touch by the fingers. The sieves also do not beat hard so as not to damage the rim.

b. The sand sample was scales 100 grams to accuracy of 0.01 grams.c. The stack of sieves was place on the Sieve Shaker Octagon 2000 machined. The biggest mesh size was put on the top sieve of the sieve shaker.e. Silica sand was put into the sieve.f. The sieves were shaken continuously for a period of 15 minutes.g. The sieves were taken apart after the shaking operation and left over sand of each sieve

was carefully weighted. The weight was recorded in column (C) of table 1.h. Grain Fineness Number (GFN) was calculated by the formula given.
