Picacho, AZ.- U.S. Marine Veteran and retired Pinal County Sheriff’s Captain Ruben Leos announced his campaign for District One Supervisor. Leos challenges career politician Pete Rios of Apache Junction. Leos made clear that he lives in the district, while Rios continues to illegally live outside the district he presently represents. Leos said, “Rios continues to deceive voters and violate the law by claiming he lives in an abandoned trailer in Dudleyville, when he actually lives in a single-family home in Apache Junction, a solid republican district. We need a supervisor who is honest and cares enough to live among the people he represents. I live in District One and have placed my life on the line to protect the hard-working families and my neighbors in District One. When you look at the problems of this district, Rios doesn’t have much to show for his decades in office. We need a greater focus on

Candidate Announcement: Ruben Leos to run for Supervisor District Oneresources from Pinal county and only a new Supervisor can deliver the change we need.” Leos continued, “I will work hard on economic issues facing district One. Many residents feel neglected as they see other areas in the county prospering. We need to work with community leaders throughout District One to coordinated efforts to create jobs and business opportunities. I will demand our county and regional economic development resources push for opportunities in the communities I represent. I have not seen or heard Rios fighting for jobs and economic development in our district unless it is an election time speech.” Leos adds, “We need more uniformed deputies in rural areas of the county and Rios has done everything to stop this from happening. Having so few deputies covering huge land areas means unacceptably extended response times to emergencies.” “Many senior citizens who are homebound are forgotten; they need support, resources and services. We can and must do more to assist our elderly with information and partner with other agencies to better address their needs,” said Leos. Finally, Leos says as a Veteran he will address challenges that many of our veterans are facing daily. “These patriots gave so much of themselves for this great nation and they’ve earned the right to be heard.

Leos helped establish and led the creation of Mental Health Co-response team for the Sheriff’s office. This is where a mental health clinician responds to those emergency calls for suicidal subjects and mental health crisis situations. “Mental health is a significant issue for many families; this is a sincere concern for me since I’ve witnessed the impact on those without help, support or where to find the needed resources. I will work hard to further support services for these members of our community so they can receive the assistance they need and have sought out in the past with no success. We must do more to support these families by building partnerships that I have established working in law enforcement.” Leos has 23 years of distinguished law enforcement service at the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. He served ten years on SWAT, four years on the Narcotics Task Force, three years on the Gang Task Force, and five years as Patrol Commander and Bureau Commander for Criminal Investigations. Leos was also in charge of reorganizing and

The Vista United Methodist Church of San Manuel has made a year’s worth of history bringing Pastor Fred Baum’s sermons of the Vista De La Montana United Methodist Church of Catalina to this community as of Jan. 20, 2020. During this past year, in addition to its 4 p.m. services, it has been instrumental in creating new attractions for the people and children of San Manuel. Some of the well-attended events were the children games, crafts and puppet show at the 2018 Car Show and the same at Mammoth’s Block Party; a grand Family day with games, crafts, jump houses and food that

over 100 people enjoyed at the church in San Manuel; and children’s games and popsicles prior to the movies at the airport this summer. Recently, there was a community Christmas sing along and a dinner for 40 just prior to Christmas. The church is planning more events for San Manuel for the coming year and invite you to participate with the events and services with refreshments at 4 p.m. each Sunday afternoon. They look forward to the second year with the Community at 801 S. McNab Pkwy., San Manuel.

Gideon Irving is a “professional globetrotting house showman” who is traveling the western United States via horseback playing his unique and eclectic music in homes across the west. He left on his journey from Creede, Colorado and has made his way into Arizona. Recently he visited Superior where he and his horses, Troubador and Augustus, stayed at the Box 8 Guest Ranch. During his stay he played a house concert where many residents of Superior attended the show and hosted a pot luck to welcome this adventurous and brave musician as he traveled through the region. While many musicians may be looking for their big break, Gideon is focussed on bringing his talents to people via home concerts. Cost of the ticket, donations and referrals to others who may want to host his show in their home. He has played in living rooms, kitchens, yurts, patios, and all places in between. Any place that can gather people can accommodate a Gideon Irving home show. Gideon realized the muti-city, late night show tours and the whole club scene was not something he wanted to do long term. After seeing a home concert in New York, he set out on his own tour across New Zealand, where he played in over 80 homes while traveling the country via bicycle. Then he returned home to New York City to play another tour across homes in the city while traveling with a shopping cart. In 2018, he moved to Utah to learn how to work with horses and prepare himself for his western states tour. During this tour he will play shows in New Mexico, Arizona, California, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming for the Horse Tour October 2019-October 2020. Gideon traveled from Safford to Superior via the Aravaipa Canyon trail and staying at the Aravaipa Inn before traveling along the road sides arriving in Superior. He was greeted and supported by residents of Kearny who helped him to navigate the horses over the divide and he visited the striking workers at ASARCO along Highway 177 in Kearny and Hayden. After his stay in Superior, Gideon traveled south on the Arizona Trail into Oracle where he is scheduled to host another home concert on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2020, at the Triangle L Ranch. The concert is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

San Manuel wrestlers Adrian Romero (182) and TJ Madrid (145) qualified for the 2020 AIA Wrestling State Championships, which will take place Feb. 13-15 at the Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley, Ariz. The duo, both juniors, placed second and fourth in their respective weight divisions at the AIA Division IV Section

II Wrestling Tournament that took place at Willcox High School on Saturday, Feb. 8. The Miners placed ninth out of 15 teams at the sectional tournament despite having only five wrestlers compete at the event. “The Miner mentality was on display,” San Manuel wrestling head coach Michael Borg told the Miner. “Some wars were won and lost. As coaches, me and my staff couldn’t be (prouder) of our team. They left it all on the

mat.” Now two Miners are moving on, getting their chance to become champions. “All I can say is our boys have worked hard all season to be where they are,” Borg said. “As it is, they reached their goal of making it to state. Now they have to finish strong and try to complete what they have been working so hard for. It’s going be a battle, but I believe if they work hard, they will obtain their goal.”

San Manuel Jr. High wrestler Aiden Lozoya (245) made history at the 2020 Arizona Junior High State Wrestling Championships by becoming the first-ever Jr. Miner to win a state championship. Lozoya, the No. 2-seed at the AZJHSWC that took place at the Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley, Ariz., on Jan. 31 – Feb. 1, pinned Winslow’s Rudolph Gonzalez in the championship match, completing an undefeated season (34 – 0) with an exclamation point, which is another first for San Manuel Junior High

wrestling. The newly crowned champion had byes in the tournament’s first two rounds before his first match in the third round, where he pinned the first of four-straight opponents on his way to making history. Lozoya wasn’t the only Jr. Miner to place at the AZJHSWC, as teammate Raymond Garcia (93) placed sixth at the event. Other Jr. Miners who qualified for the state tournament include Sean McDermott (88), Vicente Curry (104), Elmer Smith (125), Richard Ivy (133) and Augustine Romero (142). For the fourth year in a row the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition (CCEDC) has sponsored a booth at the Great Canadian Picnic in Phoenix. The picnic is a large gathering of people who are from Canada or have roots in Canada. The CCEDC uses this booth to help promote the communities located in the Copper Corridor as places to visit and live. At the booth, volunteers from the region handed out branded swag, maps of the area and coupons for local businesses. Supporting the CCEDC in this activity included the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce, Superior Chamber of Commerce, Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce and Oracle Women’s Network. The Americorps NCCC Southwest Crew also assisted with stuffing the goody bags prior to the event. Discover Gila County also sponsored a booth and between the two organizations the region was well covered.
