Monday       April 4         vs. Los Angeles FINNS IN THE PIPES…The summer saw the acquisition of Finnish netminders Antero Niittymaki and Antti Niemi. Niittymaki wassigned on July 1st, the first day of free agency, and played last season with Tampa Bay. Niemi, who won a Stanley Cup with Chicagolast season, was signed on Sept. 2.  ROSTER MAKEUP...The San Jose Sharks have been predominately built through the NHL Entry Draft. Thirteen of the team's 22players on the roster were drafted by San Jose (Marleau, Murray, Clowe, Pavelski, Mitchell, McCarthy, Setoguchi, Vlasic, Demers,McGinn, McLaren, Joslin, Couture). Four were signed as free agents (Nichol, Mayers, Niittymaki, Niemi). Five players were acquired viatrade by Doug Wilson and his staff (Thornton, Boyle, Heatley, Wallin, Huskins). JOE THORNTON NAMED CAPTAIN…Joe Thornton was named the team’s captain on Oct. 7, 2010, becoming the eighth full timecaptain in Sharks history. That number jumps to 11 as Vincent Damphousse, Mike Ricci and Alyn McCauley all wore the “C” as partof a rotating captaincy plan in 2003-04. Dan Boyle will serve as a permanent Alternate Captain for the season. Patrick Marleau andRyane Clowe will rotate the second “A” on a home-road basis. Below is the history of the “C” in San Jose: 1991-93 –Doug Wilson1993-95 –Bob Errey1995-96 –Jeff Odgers1996-98 –Todd Gill1998-03 –Owen Nolan2003* - Vincent Damphousse2003* - Mike Ricci2003* - Alyn McCauley2004-09 –Patrick Marleau2009-10 –Rob Blake2010 –Joe Thornton(*) - Damphousse, Ricci and McCauley served as part of a rotating captaincy plan JUMBO JOE...Joe Thornton has put together a remarkable career. Here are a few of the highlights: - He ranks 57th on the all-time assist list (659)- He ranks 86th on the all-time points list (947)- Amongst players that started the season 31-years-old or younger, he has the most points (947).- Has accumulated the most points since the 2002-03 season (700)- Has the second most points in the NHL since his debut in 1997 (947)- Has the third most points in the NHL since appearing in his first game with San Jose on Dec. 2, 2005.- His streak of seven consecutive 20-goal and 50-assist seasons are the longest for any player since Steve Yzerman and Doug Gilmourposted eight consecutive from 86-87 to 93-94 - His 10 consecutive seasons of 20+ goals is the second longest active streak in the League next to Jarome Iginla's 11. TERROR IN TEAL...Patrick Marleau has played in 968 games in his career, all with San Jose. Amongst active players, only NicklasLidstrom (Detroit), Martin Brodeur (New Jersey), Shane Doan (Winnipeg/Phoenix), Jarome Iginla (Calgary) and Daniel Alfredsson(Ottawa) have played more games in the NHL while remaining in the same organization for their entire career.  GIVE 'EM THE HEATER...Dany Heatley has scored the third most goals in the League since the NHL returned from the lockout in2005-06. Only Alexander Ovechkin and Ilya Kovalchuk have more goals in that time period. BOYLER ALERT...Dan Boyle is 4th in the NHL in points (268) amongst defensemen since the NHL resumed play following the lockoutin 2005-06.  His 72 goals during that time span are fourth, behind only Mike Green (81), Dion Phaneuf (77), and Zdeno Chara (74).
