Cymbidium Species and Their Influence on Hybrids

My presentation on “Cymbidium species and their influence on hybrids” will show how certain cymbidium species impart specific characteristic in their progeny. Many interesting and unusual characteristics are present in many of the cymbidium hybrids we grow in our collections. Most growers will be able to indentify some of the species cymbidiums in the background of their own plants after this presentation. Knowing the background of your orchids will hopefully allow you to provide better care and enhance the performance of your collection.

The meeting started at 7:30.

I. Vice President’s Report A. Steve: April speaker will be George Hatfield, topic: Cymbidiums. He will also provide the plant opportunity table. The Skill Session is TBD. The speaker for May will be Sebastian Vieira from Columbia. Steve also noted that he wants to be sure that the projector is properly adjusted for next month’s speaker, as it was disappointing that the slides were too dark for the March presentation. Members with technical knowledge are encouraged to help out if there are problems with the projector.

II. Membership A. Florence reported that since November 2013 there have been 10 new members and 31 renewals through Paypal. At the POE, there were 9 new memberships and 1 renewal. Several new potential members came to the March monthly meeting. Claire will follow up with membership information for these new people. The placement of the membership table in the center of the room for this year’s POE had good visibility, and people who approached the table were able to learn about the seminar speakers, orchid doctor and docent tours at the same time. April’s newsletter will be the cutoff date for those members who have not renewed their memberships for 2014. A print out of the roster list should be available at the April meeting for those members without computer access.

III. Treasurer A. Carol noted that she is still working on the accounting from the POE as all the bills come in, so up to date amounts for all the bank accounts should be available next month. The tax forms for 2013 have been completed and are ready to submit. IV. Business A. POE Update- Dennis reported that the overall show went well. Initial figures for attendance and ticket sales for the Gala and the rest of the weekend look higher than last year. The number of tickets sold through Eventbrite was 10,383 this year vs. 9600 last year. Net sales were approximately $10,000 more than last year. The increase in sponsorship was helpful this year. Taiwan is a potential sponsor again for next year, but they will be encouraged to commit as early as possible. Advertising for the show will be reviewed. There were no street banners, but it may be more valuable to put more emphasis on print and online advertisements. The banners at the BART stations gave good exposure for the show. The Silent Auction and Live Auction were not as good as previous years. The location for the auction will be reviewed as it was too far away from the food and wine stations, and audio coverage did not extend to all areas of the hall. A discussion was held regarding the fire alarm going off at the Gala.

The board voted to provide a special raffle ticket to members when they pick up and wear their name tags at our meetings. A drawing for a plant from the opportunity table will be limited to this and will immediately follow the choice by the person who did the Skill Session and the winner from the Show and Tell table. SFOS Monthly Show and Tell Table

We want to thank our members who bring in their plants for display at the monthly meetings. This is a great viewing experience for all and a great way to learn about new plants we might want to try to grow in the future for ourselves.

But did you know that you can bring in a blooming plant that you might not be certain about the name or type and have our group of experts help identify your plant? The more you know, the better your chance of success. Thank you for participating and we'll see you and your plants at the next monthly meeting. The Board

Dr. Daniel Yturraspe The San Francisco Orchid Society lost one of its lifetime members at the end of 2013, Dr. Dan Yturraspe.

I first met Dan as a professional colleague. Both he and I are veterinarians. Dr. Dan Yturraspe had a thriving practice on the Peninsula for many years and his reputation as a fabulous surgeon especially for orthopedics was well known to the SF Bay area veterinary community at large. When I was practicing full time in San Francisco at Pets Unlimited, I knew that I could always count on his expertise, compassion and people skills whenever I made a referral to him. Both the owners and the pets would be given the best of care for all aspects of their special needs.

Imagine my surprise when during a POE many years ago while I was chairing the member plant sales, Dan brought plants in to sell! What an amazing guy! Here was a colleague of mine who not only was a fabulous surgeon but was also an avid orchid grower. His tastes were eclectic and his plants were top-notch. He was as meticulous and dedicated to quality in his orchid growing hobby as he was in his professional life. I should have known! He supported the POE through many different volunteers stints but he always found time to support the member plant sales effort. He was a strong, quiet presence and someone on whom you could absolutely count on when there was work to be done at POE. It was a real pleasure to learn about that side of him and to share our mutual fascination with orchids.

It was a privilege to share a part of his life through the veterinary profession and the SFOS. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends for their loss. The world of orchids and the veterinary profession is a smaller place through his passing but our lives are richer for having known him.

Greetings San Francisco Orchid Society Member It's time to renew your membership!

With the passing of another year, it's time to renew your San Francisco Orchid Society Membership for 2014.

Your dues help the Society fulfill its mission to foster the culture and cultivation of orchids and to educate the public about orchids. Each year, the Society puts on one of the largest orchid shows in the U.S., brings you speakers from around the world giving presentations on all manner of topics about orchids and presents a diverse and highly educational plant table at each monthly meeting.

The Society thanks you for your support this past year (or half year to those of you who've joined since June!) and we hope you'll continue your membership for 2014. Dues are $25/year individual or $40 per couple - a bargain when compared to many other plant societies.

The Society also established an endowment, a savings account basically, to support the mission and operation of the Society in the future. All contributions to the endowment are tax-deductible. This is a great opportunity to make a donation before the end of the 2013 tax year and it will really help secure the future of the Society for years to come.

Thank you and we’ll see you at the Hall of Flowers!
