Facing History and Ourselves trains and supports educators, and develops curricular materials. Our myriad resources and programs promote a
more humane and involved citizenry.
Our programs help secondary school teachers engage students’ historical understanding, critical thinking, and social-emotional learning, and facilitate transformative dialogue in their classrooms. As students explore the complexities of history and human behavior,
they reflect on the choices they confront and consider how they can make a difference today.
Facing History engages more than four million students annually through our global network
of 113,000 educators. We reach the public
through community events and an extensive online library of resources. Facing History has had a strong presence in San Francisco Bay
Area since 1997.

Moving Beyond the Classroom in Antioch
We’re doing something different in Antioch this year: moving beyond the classroom. District leaders, community members, and Antioch City Council members will participate in a series of workshops about race and membership in their community. Facing History and Ourselves was invited by the superintendent of Antioch Unified School District (AUSD) to host five community-based workshops that move beyond the classroom to expand the dialogue across different sectors. Meanwhile, teachers will continue attending Facing History seminars.
In 2009, as a result of a settlement brokered in part by the American Civil Liberties Union, Facing History embarked on a district-wide partnership with AUSD to combat racial discrimination and inequitable conditions. The aim of Facing History’s work in AUSD has been to positively impact both student engagement and teacher efficacy. We do this through addressing themes of identity and the power of labels, membership in community, using powerful case studies of human experience, and positive participation in society.
In the first six years of Facing History’s delivery of professional development services, more than 170 teachers and administrators in Antioch have participated in workshops and seminars. Those teachers have developed semester-long courses, multi-week units, individual lessons, whole-school initiatives, and special projects that foster a safe
and inclusive school culture.
