Sport-Harvested Mussel Quarantine Lifted along the California Coast
California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has lifted the annual quarantine on mussels gathered by sport
harvesters along the California coast. Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins have not been detected in recent
mussel samples along the coast. PSP is a form of nervous system poisoning. Concentrated levels of the toxins can
develop in mussels and other bivalve shellfish when they feed on certain naturally occurring marine plankton.
The annual quarantine on sport-harvested mussels, which typically runs May 1 through October 31, is intended to
protect the public from shellfish poisoning caused by marine biotoxins. There have been no reports of shellfish-
related poisonings in California during this quarantine period.
Updated information about current conditions is available by calling the Shellfish Information Line at (800) 553-4133.
More information can be found on the Mussel Quarantine Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) web page.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), together with our partners including tribes and stakeholders,
is preparing to amend the Marine Life Management Act (MLMA) Master Plan.
2016 Master Plan for Marine Protected Areas Now Available
2016 Master Plan for Marine Protected Areas
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is pleased to announce the 2016 Master Plan for Marine Protected
Areas (MPAs) is now available on CDFW's Master Plan for Marine Protected Areas website.

California Department of Public Healt (CDPH) Warns Consumers Not
to Eat Sport-Harvested Bivalve Shellfish from San Luis Obispo
County
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is advising
consumers not to eat recreationally harvested mussels, clams or
whole scallops from San Luis Obispo County. Dangerous levels of
paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins have been found in mussels
from this region. The naturally occurring PSP toxins can cause illness
or death in humans. Cooking does not destroy the toxin.
This warning does not apply to commercially sold clams, mussels,
scallops or oysters from approved sources. State law permits only
state-certified commercial shellfish harvesters or dealers to sell
these products. Shellfish sold by certified harvesters and dealers are
subject to frequent mandatory testing to monitor for toxins.
PSP toxins affect the central nervous system, producing a tingling around the mouth and fingertips
within a few minutes to a few hours after eating toxic shellfish. These symptoms are typically
followed by loss of balance, lack of muscular coordination, slurred speech and difficulty swallowing
(same reaction as drinking large quantities of booze///////////). In severe poisonings, complete
muscular paralysis and death from asphyxiation can occur. There have been no reports of illnesses
related to this event.
CDPH's December 16 warning against eating sport-harvested bivalve shellfish from Monterey County
also remains in effect.
The most current information on shellfish advisories and quarantines is available by calling CDPH's
toll-free Shellfish Information Line at (800) 553-4133. For additional information, please visit the
CDPH Marine Biotoxin Monitoring Web page.

Most California anglers know state sport fishing licenses are valid for the calendar year. As of New Year's
Day, a new 2017 fishing license and report cards are required. The sooner you buy your 2017 sport
fishing license the more use you will get out of it. Don't wait, get your license today.
Cody Meyer turned a life’s passion for fishing into a
lucrative career, but he never came close to hooking a
world-record fish – until Friday.
Meyer grew up watching bass-fishing shows on television
in his parents’ Grass Valley home. Before he could drive,
his mother used to drop off the Bear River High School
student at local lakes with a little aluminum boat. He’d
stay out on the water and fish until she picked him up at
dark.
He won his first fishing tournament at 15. “I was hooked,”
he said. “I won 500 bucks. I felt like I was a
