The Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. Dave thanked those who served our country in the military. Those

who had been in the military were asked to stand and they were recognized with applause by the rest of the

members. Presidents Report - Dave Johnson called for the report from the Nomination Committee for

next years officers. Valarie Basham reported that the following people had been nominated to head our

Committees - Membership - Ed Woodruff and Peggy Dalby, Fashion - Patty Winchester, Refreshments - Shari Hughes and

Joan Dainer, Corresponding Secretary - Karen Wittkop, Property - Reen Kotas, Ways and Means - Dave Francis, Merchan-

dise -Betsy Johnson, Recreation Center - Judy Jo Beardslee, Defender and Mailbox - Ray Beardslee, Southern California

Representative - John Frazee, Webmaster - Dave Johnson. She announced that the following people had been nominated for

the Board of Directors - President - Paul Winchester, Vice President- Jim Tabor, Secretary - JoBeth Stelzer, Treasurer -

Steve Lovell, Technical - Ian Bowman, Tours- Stan Boyer,. Past President- Dave Johnson The Nomination Committee, con-

sisting of Valarie Basham, Dave Johnson, Paul Winchester, Ian Bowman, JoBeth Stelzer and Steve Lovell, were thanked for

their hard work. Dave asked if there were further nominations from the floor. None were given. The election of the 2016 slate

of officers will be held at the December 11th meeting. Two of our members returned this evening after recovering from sur-

geries. We welcomed back Gene Amy and Larry Kaiser! It was wonderful having them back and seeing how well they were

doing! We are so glad that they were able to join us! Dave Johnson reminded us about dues - MARC $45 MAFCA $40

Ours $30 MAFFI $25. Next on the agenda was a report on the upcoming installation banquet. Carol Weckman gave an en-

thusiastic report about the Gatsby Affair to take place on January 9th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. We were all encouraged to

sign up and join in the fun. It will be just $25 per person with a parking fee of $2! Minutes - The minutes of the October 9th

meeting were approved as written in the Quail Call. Treasurer - Roxy Faust gave an account of the club’s funds. She an-

nounced the bills needing to be paid. A vote was taken to pay the bills in full and it was voted upon favorably. The bills were

to be paid. Refreshments - Shari Hughes thanked those that provided the goodies this evening. Boy, were they good! I don’t

think that there was anything left! Yum. Ways and Means - Ed Poffenberger told us what was available this evening - 2 wind

catchers made by Reen, a Ford book, gloves, ornaments, a banquet ticket and of course a famous Julian pie. The drawing will

be held later. Passed out from Sammy’s in Chandler, Arizona were 2016 calendars and ball point pens. Parades - Bud Swart-

wood reminded us about the Fall Back Festival - November 8th, the North Park Toyland Holiday Parade - December 5th , the

Pacific Beach Holiday Parade -December 12th, and announced that we will not participate in the La Jolla Community Parade

as it is so close to Christmas and interferes with plans made by so many of our members. Tours - Paul Winchester informed

us that there will be no tour in the month of December because we will be doing so many parades at that time of the year.

Club Apparel - Betsy Johnson brought items for sale. They will be available in the kitchen during our break. She will also

take orders at that time. Quail Call - Valarie Basham announced that she was preparing the next rooster and needed members

to tell her of any changes in addresses, phone numbers or email addresses. Please let her know right away. Membership - Ed

Woodruff and Peggy Dalby informed us that 56 members were in attendance this evening. Fashions - Our very fashionable

Nayola Bieber, encouraged us to dress in era clothing for our Installation Banquet. She suggested that the gentlemen might

consider wearing bow ties, suspenders and black pants. The gals should look for dresses without fitted waists and without zip-

pers. They should consider wearing long pearls and carrying era handbags. If you are able there are patterns one can get from

MAFCA. Look for one that matches the age of your vehicle. It can be a fun project. Check in your November Quail Call for

the web site - it’s in Nayola’s column. Report on Member - Bob Weckman announced that Fred Dacy had back surgery and

should be returning home in a few days. Everyone wishes him well and hopes that the surgery was successful so that he can

return to club activities soon! Technical - Arlyn Bieber gave us very informative information about how to increase the horse-

power in your Model A - if you don’t mind spending a considerable amount of money. He talked about installing a high com-

pression head or perhaps a Model B Zenith carburetor (this will allow more air and fuel to enter the combustion chamber).

Also, you can take weight off of your flywheel. Be sure that before you attempt any of these things, you need to strengthen

your brakes. It is important to be able to stop your fast moving vehicle! Want to know what the mystery part was? It was the

headlight sockets. Did you get it right? Ed Poffenberger did and he won the drawing. Drawing - The drawing dollar amount

was climbing - to win you need to be present and wearing your nametag. The dollar amount was $60 and everyone was on the

edge of their seat. There was a hush as Jerriann drew the name from the box. Who should win but Jim and Jerriann Tabor!

Congratulations! Ways and Means - Ed Poffenberger read off the winning tickets and many happy members went home with

a prize. Defender - Ray Beardsley announced that several members from our club were

honored in the MAFCA magazine for years of membership - Fred Meyers - 50 yrs., Ron

Avakian and John and Dianne Frazee - 40 yrs., and lastly Reen Kotas 30 yrs. WOW!!!

Congratulations. Joke - Ric Bonnoront was back! He tickled our funny bones and

challenged our wit!

Adjournment - Dave Johnson closed the meeting in due form at 8:45.

Respectfully submitted, Judy Boyer Secretary

TOURS: Paul Winchester

This will be my last Quail Call Article as your Tour leader for 2015, we have had many great Tours

but most of all we had a great time just standing around and talking waiting for the Tour to begin.

I do not have a Tour planned for December as I and many of you will be busy with end of year and

Holiday activities.

Thank you all for attending the Tours and making them fun, Next year Stan and Judy Boyer will do a

great job of leading the Tours around the San Diego area.

Have a great Holiday season and I will see you next year. Here’s a look back at some early tours this year!

Dues are Due: Last month a blue 2016 Dues Renewal Form was included in your issue of the Quail Call if you

receive snail mail (hopefully you filled it out and have returned it). If you received it electroni- cally it

was in the Quail Call and you will need to print it out yourself. Please take the time to fill out this form

and return it to the club as soon as possible. Treasurer Roxy would really appreciate it. Last year 45

phone called had to be made to members who didn’t get their Dues paid by the end of Decem- ber.

Please remember we are all volunteers, let’s make it easier for them this year.

Dues are $30.00 per family made payable to: San Diego Model A Ford Club or SDMAFC.

Please bring it to the December Meeting or mail it to P. O. Box 19805, San Diego, CA. 92159

The 2016 Membership Roster will be coming out at the February meeting and we want to make

sure it is as accurate as possible. If you have made any changes to your personal contact infor-

Completed ------

Sunday, November 8 was the Fall Back Festival in Downtown San Diego. Activities included many

things associated with earlier days in San Diego. Children (of all ages) had fun creating their own

candles, churning butter, eating cotton candy and pony rides to name a few. Once again, the Model

A’s were appreciated by many. I thank all of you who supported this Community Event highlighting the history of

San Diego. Editor Note: Apparently at the Festival I entered a drawing sponsored by the Gas Lamp Foundation,

and then received a call, that I had won: tickets to the San Diego Zoo or Safari Park. Now that was a pleasant sur-

prise.

Coming up -------

The North Park Toyland Holiday Parade is scheduled for Saturday. December 5 at 11AM. 10 Model A’s plan to par-

ticipate. Meet at the Carl’s Jr on El Cajon Blvd & 30th (N E Corner) for a 9:30 departure.

The Pacific Beach Holiday Parade will be on Saturday, December 12. We will meet at the Mission Bay Park, 2688 E

Mission Bay Dr. leave there at 11:15am, then go to the Parade staging area. Fred Crone will be leading this Event.

There are 7 Model A’s currently signed up. Please consider joining in for this fun Club Event

This has been a great year for both Parades and Car Displays supported by the San Diego Model A Family. There

were 26 total Events; 15 Car Displays and 11 Parades. 47 Individual Model A Club Members participated, most with

their Model A’s, a few with their Moderns. With the two remaining Club Events, these numbers of participation may

vary. I appreciate the cooperation and support from all of you to make this such a successful year.

TECHNICAL TALK: Arlyn Bieber

LUBRICATING THE VACUUM WIPER MOTOR

Only one company manufactured the vacuum windshield wiper for the Model A. That company’s

name was TYICO. One of the problems with the vacuum wiper is lack of lubrication. The internal

reciprocating parts fit tightly which results in high friction. If the internal parts are worn the vacuum will leak past

the “paddle “and the wiper will not operate so it is important to “oil the wiper” to minimize wear. A light machine

oil works well and some people have used Marvel Mystery Oil with success. Brake fluid is another good wiper lubri-

cant but will blister the paint if any is leaked on the gas tank or hood.

Here’s how to lubricate the wiper motor. Remove the vacuum hose at the vacuum motor. Hold your finger

lightly over the hose nipple on the motor and cycle the wiper blade back and forth. Note that in one direction the mo-

tor sucks in air and the opposite direction, the air is expelled. Place the wiper blade in the position such that the mo-

tor will begin to suck air.

Attach a 6-inch long piece of hose to the motor nipple and hold the open end up. Before proceeding it is a

good practice to cover your gas tank with an old towel. No matter how careful you are you will spill some oil.

(Don’t ask me how I know that.) Using a squeeze bottle, force about one teaspoon of oil into the hose. Place your

thumb over the end of the hose and with your other hand move the blade back and forth several times. This will suck

the oil into the interior of the motor lubricating the interior parts. It is probably a good idea to repeat this procedure a

second time especially if it has been years since the motor has been oiled.

Hook up the vacuum hose to the motor and start the engine and

run the wiper motor. It should run, if not it may be time for a rebuild.

Rebuild kits are available from many of the Parts houses or you can send

your wiper to several people that rebuild wiper for a fee. Remember, it is

normal for the wiper to slow down or nearly stop when the car is acceler-

ated.

Come to the December meeting to hear more about windshield

wipers and why the electric wiper motors on the early Model As are far

superior!!

MODEL A MYSTERY PART: Here is a part used on the Model A. Can you identify the part??

For “bragging rights” send an email to [email protected] with your answer. Your answer may be Ford’s part number, part name or an accurate description. In other words descriptions such as that thingamajig on the back of the car probably won’t win. Good luck! The names of those who correctly identify the part will be placed in a box for a drawing at the Novem-ber meeting. Remember you must also attend the November meeting to re-ceive the $10 award. Good luck guessing this month’s mystery part!

ERA FASHIONS 1928-1931: Nayola Bieber

Looking for a Good Christmas Present? In 1929 you could have picked from some of these choice

items! This is a selection from “The Perry G. Mason Co” of Cincinnati Ohio. Apparently, if you sold

enough items from the catalog to friends and family, you ended up with free items (“premiums”) for

yourself! With the prices listed, it probably wasn’t hard to sell a few of these! I would love to have the

“Love Bird Hat or Dress Pin” made of silver colored metal with green colored inlay and set with nine

fine cut extra brilliant stones. The “Lindy tie clasp” was probably a big seller too, with the gold plated

airplane on an enam-

eled background.

There’s a beautiful

“jeweled flexible link

bracelet” with 8

“sparkling brilliants”

and what man wouldn’t

want that “Men’s 3-pc

set” with the red center

snap cuff buttons and

scarf pin, with the imi-

tation diamonds. The

“Genuine Gold Plate

vest chain” is very nice

looking, especially with

the addition of a knife

or pencil. And I’m sure

many a little girl was

thrilled with that

“Child’s comb and

cord”, with the pendant

style red ivoroid case.

But my favorite thing

on the whole page has

got to be the “Bathing

Girl Tie Clasp”. Check

it out on the right top of

the page, right next to

the imitation red leather

covered “Surefire cigar

or cigarette lighter”!

Woo-Hoo, I bet that

was risqué stuff back

then! I could just see

my Grandpa wearing

that clasp just to irritate

my Grandma.

? CORRECTION ?

While reading the November edition of The Quail Call I stumbled upon a note I had submitted to the editor regarding my up-

coming return to the west coast. At first I thought there was a typo with the word “lying”, in reference to politicians, In check-

ing the original submission I discovered it was listed as lieing, as in telling a lie, Apparently that spelling was not appropriate.

My computer spell-checker did not catch it. I guess you can’t expect too much from a $ 29.95 bargain brand machine.

I make no claims to being a master speller, one prone to proper punctuation, or word usage. (as you have probably ascertained

from my previous postings). I trust you will be lenient in your judgment.

Things I ponder:

Did it ever occur to you that our time here on earth is not too unlike a roll of toilet paper?

The closer to the end it gets, The faster it goes.

Why do they not refer to hemorrhoids as assteroids? (wish I had a real spell-checker).

When a human gets choked their faces turn blue. What color does a smurfs face turn?

If a guy dies from an overdose of Viagra, How do they close the casket lid?

An interesting response I received regarding my proposal for a National Friends Day,

Me and you is friends! You smile, I smile! You hurt, I hurt! You cry, I cry! You jump off a

bridge! I gonna miss your E-Mails!

Time to take a brake. (according to the dictionary “brake” means a sudden stop..)

See you in a month, or so……Bill Corson

Please consider attending the Banquet on January 9th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Mission Valley, the club is obligated for 100 reservations. It is $25.00 per club member. There is a reservation form on page three of this issue. Get all the facts, menu choices and contact information there. You are guaran-teed to have a good time. Raffle prizes, and maybe a surprise or two. Nayola has some helpful hints on finding just the right outfit for the occasion.

Ladies -- if you are looking for shoes to wear to “A Gatsby Affair” Installation Banquet, these are good examples from a 1928 Montgomery Ward catalog. Look for “Era Image” look-alikes in leather, satin or black patent, closed/rounded toe, strap with buckle, t-strap, or a plain opera pump. Block heel (no spike) height from 1” to 3”. eBay has shoes made for dancers (search “ballroom dance shoes closed toe” in Dancewear); many are Era styled and comfortable.

for Jim & Jerriann Taber, there were

a few raised eyebrows, when Jerriann

pulled out their name. But we all

watched and it seemed to be on the up and up. The

pot rolls back to just $10 this month. Come to the

December 11th meeting, sit in the front row and

maybe you can draw out your own name too.

Congratulations Jim& Jerriann thanks for being such

good sports.

The Model A Ford Museum has

had a great year and we thank all of

you and your local Model A clubs for

supporting the museum through your

gifts and visits. Are you looking for a

unique Christmas gift for your special Model

A’er? A MAFFI membership would make a

thoughtful holiday gift for anyone with interest in

the Model A Ford. This gift provides a real “win-

win” situation – an appreciated gift for the recipient

and a welcomed MAFFI donation on behalf of the

giver. Check out www.maffi.org for application and

the benefits of membership.
