San Benito High School District ‘Flips the Switch’ with Solar Carports Challenge The San Benito High School District (SBHSD) was on a mission to become more environmentally conscious, reduce electricity costs and provide new educational opportunities for its students. Solution SunPower Commercial Dealer, Climatec Inc. answered the call by designing and constructing three SunPower ® Helix ® carport systems for the district, incorporating a total of 1530 SunPower ® modules. Energy production is constantly monitored by SunPower software. Benefit The solar carports provide shaded parking for students and employees while producing over 1 million kWh of clean energy every year, offsetting an estimated 88% percent of the district’s electricity use. Students benefit from STEM education, and the community has rallied around the district’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. A Mission that MattersThe San Benito High School District (SBHSD) has embarked on a mission to become more energy efficient and environmentally conscious. Facing rising utility costs and a growing concern about grid reliability issues plaguing its schools going forward, officials looked toward solar for a solution.

Working with Climatec, the district initiated an energy infrastructure project in 2019, not only to be proactive against future financial burdens, but also to promote STEM education in their classrooms.

San Benito High School’s environmental science students, administrators, and community members celebrated the connection of the 665.5 kW solar system—and the success of the campus energy efficiency and renewable energy program—at a ceremonial “Flipping the Switch” event in October.

The district’s SunPower® Helix® system includes three solar carports built on the parking lot, serving double duty of providing much-needed shade for parking and providing approximately 1,169,208 kWh of clean electricity every year.

“We are proud to start implementing energy efficient and solar technologies at our district so our students can enjoy day-to-day learning,” said SBHSD Superintendent Shawn Tennenbaum, Ed.D., on the day of celebration. “These solutions will maximize long-term benefits to our district, ensuring optimal learning and working environments for our students and staff to continue to succeed.”

With recent utility shutoffs in California, the district is exploring battery storage and microgrid technologies as ways to complement the solar PV system and ensure schools are up and running during grid outages.

The success of the solar program has made SBHSD officials even more interested in reimagining the district’s energy infrastructure, with additional environmental sustainability programs planned for, both in and out of the classroom, in the years ahead.
