You often hear people talk about how things are bigger in Texas, but there are still parts of the state that are small and cozy, and just waiting to be discovered. If you are visiting San Antonio and looking for a day trip out of the city, just head 30 miles north and you will find yourself in Texas Hill country, home to some of the finest wineries that the state has to offer.

When you take that drive, you will likely have a moment or two where you start to think that you have left the great state of Texas and somehow landed in the rolling hills of Tuscany.

You can certainly experience San Antonio wine tasting by visiting any number of the great food and wine spots along the Riverwalk, but you may not get to sample a fraction of the wines that are available on the Texas Wine Trail.

There are more than 30 different wineries spanning over 9 million acres of land along that stretch, and each one has something a little different to offer their visitors.

Many of the varietals that are made in the wineries in San Antonio and beyond never make it out to the restaurants in the big cities. They are made in smaller batches, sampled, and snapped up by those who take the time to actually stop in and visit the wineries where they are produced.

When you leave San Antonio, head north along I-10 and follow the signs for Fredericksburg, as that is where you will start to see the San Antonio wineries start to pop up. Along the way, you will encounter quaint little towns and scenery that is sure to take your breath away.

You will eventually end up on Fredericksburg Wine Road 290, which is where some of the finest wineries in the country ply their trade. The varietals that are among the most common in this part of the country are Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, but you are sure to discover a host of delicious treats besides those.

Many people who visit the Texas Hill Country compare it to the way that Napa Valley was before the wine industry exploded there and tourists started flocking in. While the wineries in San Antonio and beyond are on the rise, the region is still something of a little secret.

When you pay a visit, you will often be able to meet the owners of the wineries and gain real insight into the wine making process. It’s like a peek behind the curtain that you simply cannot get in some of the better known wine regions.

The proximity of Texas Hill Country to San Antonio means that day’s trips are very much available, but if you want to stay out there a little while longer, there are plenty of places to bed down for the night.

Some of the wineries even offer a bed and breakfast service, as well as live music and other forms of entertainment. This piece of Texas may not be bigger, but it will certainly be tough to find anything better.
