PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The new year began at full speed!

Dr. Jui-Lien Chou, guest speaker at our January meeting, shared important information

on her Aurora Cancer Center and its latest technology. After taking questions from the

audience, she generously provided informational packets for us to take home. Many

thanks to our SARW volunteers for assisting Nunzio Previtera, HD 123. They have been

busy block walking and phone banking. Still a lot work to do before the Special Election

Day on Feb. 17. On January 18, 100-plus SARW members, family & friends attended the

Spurs game against Utah. Even though we sat up high in the balcony, we made the best

of it & had fun! The highlight was having a Courtside photo taken with the Spurs Coyote

after the game. Thank you all who supported us by purchasing tickets. The 2015 Texas

Inauguration was held on Jan. 20 at the State Capitol in Austin, Tx. In attendance were

SARW members Laura Koerner, Dee Momone, Paula Moore, Gerri Peters, Gale Sayers,

Debbie Wall, Mary Louise York & myself. On this glorious day with clear blue skies, we

watched Gov. Gregg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick take their Oath of office. It was

emotional. A BBQ was held on the Capitol grounds, followed by a parade and ending with

the black-tie Gala. We are so proud to live in the wonderful state of Texas. With a new

session getting underway, we will keep you updated with the issues being addressed by

our representatives in the Statehouse. I reiterate Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick's quote in his

Inaugural speech, "It's a new day in Texas!" – Sylvia Gartner

She also has been a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and

a member of the Project Management Institute since 2011.

Laura is originally from Chicago, IL and, after living in many cities

throughout the country, she currently lives in Fair Oaks Ranch, TX with her

husband, Mike, and twin 3 year old daughters, Alexandra and Eva. She

enjoys volunteering for local and state Republican organizations and

candidates. In 2014, she was appointed to the Texas Federation of

Republican Women Board as the Military Liaison and was recently elected

as the 2nd Vice President for Ways and Means for the San Antonio

Republican Women Board. Laura also takes pleasure in running, attending

toddler sport lessons with her daughters, and providing coaching advice to

friends and family. Laura is a recovering competitive runner and triathlete

and was certified as an USA Triathlon Level 1 Coach in 2009 at the Olympic

Training Center. You will often find Laura with her head stuck in her many

tech gadgets. She is a self-described “tech-nerd,” and fills the remainder of

her time by blogging, tweeting, and listening to technology podcasts, and

has to been known to fix many urgent tech emergencies that arise around

her.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

The Legislature is in session in Austin, TX. I hope you will take the short drive to the Capitol and observe the proceedings. I

would encourage you to check out The Texas Legislature Online. http://www.legis.state.tx.us/MnuHouse.aspx. This

TED CRUZ JUST AUDITIONED TO BE THE RIGHT’S BOLD

LEADER IN 2016, AND CONSERVATIVES LOVED IT

By Rebecca Nelson

Reprinted with Permission

Ted Cruz has already solidified his 2016 agenda. And some conservatives can't get enough of it.

On Monday at Heritage Action for America's Conservative Policy Summit, a two-day policy primer in Washington, the Texas senator and likely presidential contender laid out the points of his platform for the newly sworn in Republican Congress—and urged his colleagues to stick to their campaign promises.

"Let's stand up and lead," he said. "Let's lead with a big, bold, positive agenda, that says to the American people, 'You had a referendum, and you rejected the Obama agenda. There is a better way.' "

His 10-point plan, which ranges from the expected—repealing Obamacare—to the highly unlikely—abolishing the IRS—is his apparent attempt to solidify himself as the premier antiestablishment candidate in 2016. With cheers and "amen"s

reminiscent of a gospel church at Heritage on Monday, it was clear that the conservative audience—a near full house—was on board.

Cruz started crafting the message he delivered Monday before last year's election. In a USA Today op-ed in October, he framed the same points as priorities for a Republican Congress. He said Monday that, now that the GOP has a majority,

likely transition him to a presidential bid.

The summit, billed as "Opportunity for All, Favoritism to None," laid out a distinctly conservative policy agenda in 2016, from cutting "waste" in the federal budget to allowing union workers to receive raises above their negotiated contracts. Former Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, the Heritage Foundation's president, called Cruz and the other congressmen participating in the event "the real progressives in Washington."

On securing the border and stopping "the president's unconstitutional amnesty," Cruz urged his colleagues to take action. "It ain't complicated. We need to do what we said we would do." To control government spending and rein in the federal debt, he advocated the passage of a balanced-budget amendment, arguing that it's "only basic common sense." And on repealing Common Core, he invoked Martin Luther King Jr., telling the audience that "school choice is the civil-rights issue of the 21st century."

"I can think of nothing that would be a greater legacy for Dr. King than for us to embrace across parties, across race, across lines, that we are united in saying, 'Every kid has a right to a quality education regardless of who they are,' " he said.

On the subject of dealing "seriously" with the Islamic State and a nuclear Iran, Cruz brought up last week's fatal shooting at the satirical Paris newspaper Charlie Hebdo, stepping out from behind the lectern.

"Our hearts weep for the journalists wrongfully murdered, for the police officers targeted and murdered, for the Jewish customers at a grocery store murdered because of who they are," he said.

And he pounced on President Obama for failing to attend a unity march for the fallen in Paris over the weekend.

"It is hard to enlist the support of allies when America ceases being a good ally. How sad was it in the streets of Paris, as 40 world leaders walked down the street, absent was the United States. Where was the president? Where was the vice president? Where was the secretary of State?"

It's only a preview of the kind of attacks—geared toward the Obama administration and the GOP establishment—that he'll likely employ in the primaries. And Monday gives an early sense of just how well they may be received

MORE MEN TAKE ON CAREGIVER ROLE

By: Brenda Dever-Armstrong, CEO/Owner, The Next Horizon Senior/Military Locator/Resources/CaptionCall Phone

Almost twice as many men now are taking care of someone with Alzheimer's disease or dementia, up to almost 40 percent

of caregivers from 19 percent just 15 years ago, according to one study by the Alzheimer's Association. Experts say the reason

is more women older than 65 years have the disease – 3.4 million compared with 1.8 million

men at last count.

Changes in the economy, and layoffs or early retirements made more men available than used

to be the norm. There are other factors as families are scattered over the country, longer life

expectancy and changing ideas about gender roles.

Many families hire “caregiver” agencies to help out 4 hours a day for 2-3 days a week so the

husband can take a “break” from being the 24/7 Caregiver. All Caregivers need to take that

one day or a few hours and get away from the stress of doing it all. We suggest the Caregiver

go to a movie, musical or play, lunch with a friend, take walks, golf, or whatever feels good to

you – doing something to rest your mind.

Obviously, not all male or female caregivers are the same, but women seem to deal with illness more emotionally; men have

been taught to be strong and stoic. They do not allow themselves to express themselves as much as women. Most men say

– if there is a problem, let's solve it, they don't want to feel or talk about it – at least not in public.

We always suggest for any Caregiver to attend one of the Caregiver Support Groups. At the group sessions you can ask

questions that others may have already gone through the phase you are now entering. It is a way to find help from those

that are the Caregiver themselves. Also, many groups have experts come in and talk about the various levels of Dementia.

Check out the Alzheimer website: www.alz.org. We have a wonderful Alzheimer Chapter here in San Antonio. Stop by their

office – lots of literature and information.
