Have you ever gone into the new year certain this will be the year you change your life for the better, but after just a few weeks, you fall right back into the same habits? Well, you are not alone.

According to John Norcross, a distin-guished professor of clinical psychology at the University of Scranton, approxi-mately 45 percent of Americans make resolutions to better themselves.

However, only a small percentage actually sticks with their goal. Statistics show about 75 percent of people stay on track for the first week, yet less than 46 percent are still on track after six months.

There are many reasons a person might have trouble keeping up with their goals, such as stress or even just lack of motivation. To help prevent fall-ing off track with your resolutions, here are some tips to start your resolutions strong.

1. Be realistic. The quickest and surest way to fall short of your goals is to make them unattainable. For example, resolving you will never eat fast food again is setting yourself up to fail. Instead, strive to be realistic, such as avoiding it more than you do now. Also, don't keep your resolution a secret. Tell family and friends who will support you, maybe even find a friend with the same goal and moti-vate each other.

2. Plan ahead. Don't wait until the last minute to make your resolutions;

otherwise, it will be based on the mindset of the particular day. It is best to have your resolutions planned well before the start of the new year. It is also wise to detail how you will avoid the temptation to break your resolution, such as talking to a friend or remem-bering how poorly it would affect your goal.

3. Keep a journal. Start a journal to track your progress. You can write a pros and cons list and track each small success. Short-term goals are easier to keep, and each small accomplishment will help keep you motivated toward achieving your long-term goal.

4. Reward yourself. Celebrate your success by treating yourself to some-thing you enjoy that doesn't contradict with your resolution. For example, if your goal is to eat healthier, reward your success with new clothes or a trip to the movies with a friend.

5. Don't beat yourself up. Do the best you can each and every day, taking it

one day at a time. If you slip up, obsess-ing over it won't get you anywhere. Some resolutions can be tough to ac-complish, but the rewarding feeling you get when you succeed at meeting your goal is well worth it.

6. Keep trying. If you run out of motivation after a while, don't give up. Experts say it takes 21 days for a new activity to become a habit, and six months for it to become a part of your personality. Recommit yourself for 24 hours, and soon the 24-hour increments will build up, ultimately putting you back on track. Success doesn't happen overnight, so stay motivated and patient.

There is a quote from Robert Foster Bennett that says, "A desire to be in charge of our own lives, a need for con-trol, is born in each of us. It is essential to our mental health, and our success, that we take control."

The road to self-improvement is not an easy one, but in the end, it could very well be worth it.

Offi cials with the 59th Medical Wing are encouraging eligible patients to give TRICARE Online another look and take advantage of recent upgrades aimed at improv-ing the user experience.

TOL, the Department of Defense’s online patient-focused portal, gives benefi ciaries secure, anytime access to health care information and services. The portal is open to TRICARE patients, at least 18 years old, receiving care at a military hospital or clinic.

“The improvements to TOL are great. It’s easier than ever for our patients to schedule appointments them-selves without having to call the appointment line. They can also easily refi ll prescriptions and access or print select medical documents, saving them a trip to the clinic,” said Maj. Joseph Popham, TRICARE Operations and Patient Administration fl ight commander with the 59th Medical Support Squadron.

The appointment-setting feature includes options for benefi ciaries to make, change and cancel appointments; view future and past appointments; and set up email and text message reminders.

Family members over the age of 18 must have their own TOL account, but authorized family members – based on relationships established in the Defense En-

rollment Eligibility Reporting System, or DEERS - can manage appointments and prescription refi lls for other family members for whom they’ve been granted access, according to the TOL website.

“An active-duty Airman can grant his spouse the abil-ity to book and cancel appointments for the couple and their dependent children,” Popham explained.

Another feature of TOL online is called Blue Button, a tool giving benefi ciaries easy access to their medical re-cord information. Patients can review, print or download

information about medications, allergies, immunization records and lab and radiology results.

Benefi ciaries can also use the site to get refi lls on existing prescriptions for themselves and their family members, Popham said.

“Users can request up to 10 refi lls at a time and check their status,” he explained.

For active-duty members transitioning out of the military, TOL includes a service separation page with medical information and guidance for people prepar-ing to separate from active duty or the reserves. The page includes guidance on fi ling a VA disability claim, has access to the Transition Assistance Program portal, and offers steps to assist service members through the separation process.

“TOL has really improved over the past year,” Popham said. “We hope everybody signs up and takes a few mo-ments to look around. The site has a lot to offer.”

The system is user-friendly and registration takes only a few minutes:

1. Go to http://www.tricareonline.com and click “Log In.”

2. Log in with a DOD Self-Service username /pass-word, DOD common access card, or DFAS myPay cre-dentials. Users without a CAC or myPay account can register for DS logon credentials by clicking “Register.”

3. Select a TOL feature to explore.

1) Identity theft occurs when someone uses your Social Security number of other personal information to commit fraud.2) Identity theft can happen to anyone.3) Once identity thieves have your personal information, they can drain your bank account, run up charges on your credit cards, open new utility accounts or get medical treatment on your health insurance. An identity thief can fi le a tax

refund in your name and get your refund. In some extreme cases, a thief might even give your name to the police during an arrest.4) If your wallet, Social Security number or other personal information is lost or stolen, there are steps you can take to help protect yourself.5) If you think you are the victim of iden-tity theft, act immediately.

Military ambassadors chosen for 2016Military ambassadors from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air

Force and Coast Guard will represent their respective services at San Antonio-area community

events, including nearly 150 activities associated with Fiesta

San Antonio. They also participate in parades and visit local schools,

nursing homes and retirement facilities throughout the year.

Staff Sgt. Jacquelyn M. Jones and Sgt. 1st Class Thomas Richardson

Staff Sgt. Jacquelyn M. Jones, from Jacksonville, N.C., is assigned as the Army Music Recruiting liaison with the 5th Recruiting Brigade. She proctors auditions, conducts Army music outreach and awareness tours and presentations at high schools, universities and music conventions for the U.S. Army Music Program. Sgt. 1st Class Thomas Richardson, from Halifax County, Va., is the operations NCO for the 412th Contracting Support Brigade. He directly supports 65 Soldiers and 234 Department of the Army civilians and is the primary liaison between the brigade S3 to one battalion, six contingency contracting teams and six contracting centers.

Tech. Sgt. Jacqueline I. Crow and Tech. Sgt. Steven Nowicki

Tech. Sgt. Jacqueline I. Crow from San Antonio is the intelligence NCO in charge at the 149th Fighter Wing’s Operations Support Squadron. She ensures the intelligence team maintains the capability to provide timely and accurate operational support and fully trained personnel. Crow also develops scenarios for unit training missions and creates threat of the day briefs and mission planning studies for peacetime. Tech. Sgt. Steven Nowicki is assigned to the 341st Training Squadron at JBSA-Lackland, where he is the team chief for the Military Working Dog Handler Course. Nowicki guides the instructor team that provides formal training in basic MWD principles.

Sgt. Dawn P. Casiano and Sgt. Thiago M. Alves

Sgt. Dawn P. Casiano, from Princeton, Texas, is assigned to the 4th Reconnaissance Battalion as a supply administrative and logistics NCO. Her responsibilities include ensuring all supply administrative opera-tions are accomplished to meet all procurement needs for fi ve outlying companies within the battalion. Sgt. Thiago M. Alves, from Recife, Brazil, is assigned to the 4th Reconnaissance Battalion. His responsibilities include being a personnel clerk, where he is responsible for pay, travel and administrative issues. He is also responsible for training Marines for honor guard duty and acts as a Sergeant of Marines.

Petty Offi cer 1st Class Kadia Griffi n andPetty Offi cer 1st Class Kalvin Wilburn

Petty Offi cer 1st Class Kadia Griffi n, from Hollywood, Fla., is a Navy dental assistant program leading petty offi cer and instructor at the Navy Medicine Education and Training Command at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston. She is responsible for leading the daily operations of and providing in-structional hours to students for the Navy Dental Assistant Program. Petty Offi cer 1st Class Kalvin Wilburn, from Killeen, Texas, is assigned to the Navy Information Operations Command Texas at JBSA-Lackland, where he is an administration department leading petty offi cer, guiding a team of 12 junior personnel in processing the administrative and pay and personnel requirements for more than 600 command personnel.

Petty Offi cer 1st Class Betsy L. Harrell, from Lenoir, N.C., is assigned to the U.S. Coast Guard Recruiting Offi ce San Antonio. She is responsible for processing qualifi ed applicants into the U.S. Coast Guard. Petty Offi cer 1st Class Marco Rivera from Houston is assigned to the Coast Guard Cryptologic Unit Texas at the Texas Cryptologic Center at JBSA-Lackland. He is an intelligence specialist, performing a wide range of duties associated with the collection, analysis, processing and dis-semination of intelligence in support of Coast Guard operations.

Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph members who want to get a healthier start to the new year and lose those extra pounds have several options for starting a fi tness program to help them feel better and stay fi t.

Melanie Andraus, Rambler Fitness Center certifi ed personal trainer, said the fi rst step in starting a fi tness program is to set short and long term goals. Fitness goals can give JBSA-Randolph members something to strive for and keep them motivated.

Andraus said one of those goals can be setting a specifi c amount of time during the week to work out or go to the gym.

Once one goal is achieved, Andraus said other goals can fall into reach, if a person sticks to their routine.

Andraus said a beginning exercise program should include work outs that allow a person to gradually reach their fi tness goals in steps. She said people should be careful of not overworking themselves because if they do, they risk getting an injury.

“Start off with a moderate workout and work yourself up to a more intense workout,” Andraus said. “Your body has to build up gradually.”

Whether it’s walking, running or lift-ing weights, a fi tness program should include activities that the person actu-ally likes to do, Andraus said. Other activities in a workout include using an elliptical machine, playing basketball or racquetball.

“It should be something that you en-joy,” Andraus said. “If it’s just something you absolutely hate, you’re not going to do it. The best type of workout is the one you will do, and that you won’t make excuses not to do.”

Andraus said the best fi tness programs are those that include exercises for the entire body, that improve strength and help the cardiovascular system. She said a well-rounded exercise program can help burn fat and develop lean muscle mass at the same time, which helps in-crease metabolism in the body.

“You want a varied routine that’s keeping your body challenged in dif-ferent ways throughout the week,” Andraus said.

For those JBSA-Randolph members who are on a tight schedule and have limited time to work out, Andraus said they can adapt a circuit training routine in which a person can do fi ve to 10 exercises in 30 minutes to an hour by repeating the exercises two to three times.

Having someone to workout with can help a person stick to their rou-tine, Andraus said.

“One of the great things is to have a friend or a partner to do it with to keep each other accountable,” she said. “It just keeps you more motivated if you are not doing it alone.”

Andraus said eating healthy helps com-plement a good fi tness routine. She said a person who exercises regularly should eat fi ve to six times a day, including small meals and snacks. Eating healthy should consist of a balanced diet of carbohy-drates, proteins and healthy fats to help fuel a person’s workout routine.

Healthy foods include Greek yogurt that is high in protein but not high in sugar, nuts and fruits. Andraus said nuts have a good balance of protein and healthy fats. Other foods with healthy fats include avocados, those with olive oil and fl ax seeds. Flax seeds include Omega 3, a fatty acid that studies show can help reduce the risk of a heart attack.

Andraus said to avoid processed foods cook your meals at home because you know what will be going into them.

Andraus said not to give up or get dis-couraged if you don’t meet your fi tness goals for one day or one week. Have the attitude of starting back again the next day, stay motivated and keep going.

Active duty members wanting to get into an exercise routine free of charge can contact Tommy Brown, Rambler Fitness Center recreation aide, at 652-7271.

The fi tness center has three certifi ed personal trainers that provide one-on-one training and charge a fee per ses-sion. Contact information for the person-al trainers is provided at the center.

Street construction planned The 502nd Civil Engineer Squadron will conduct a pavement rehabilitation project on 5th Street West, including removal and replacement of existing pavement, curbs and sidewalks from F Street West to C Street West. Demolition and construction activities will occur in various phas-es and will require street and parking closures on 5th Street West for the time periods below:• On-street parking closed from E Street to D Street and the far East parking row in lots closed for Hangar 64 and 70 through today.• Far east row in parking lots for Hangar 71 and 72 will be closed Monday-Wednesday.• Asphalt will be milled off the roadway from F Street to C Street from Jan. 16-17.• Phase I: 5th Street West will be closed from F Street to E Street Jan. 18 – Feb. 26. • Phase II: 5th Street West will be closed from E Street to D Street Feb. 29 – April 1. • Phase III: 5th Street West will be closed from D Street to C Street April 4 – May 13. • 5th Street West will be closed May 21 from F Street to C Street for asphalt paving. Check expiration dates on IDs All Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, Command Access Card and military ID card locations throughout Joint Base San Antonio are by 100 percent appointment only and wait time for an appointment can be up to 30 days. Civilian and military members need to remember their CACs and military IDs expire and must schedule renewal appointments appropriately. Plan ahead for family members when their ID cards or DEERS updates need to be made.

Construction planned for Golf Road Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph's Golf Road is closed with a planned reopening Feb. 2. The 502nd Civil Engineer Squadron is working on a pavement rehabilitation, which includes replace-ment of pavement and curbs. Construction staging for the project is located on the crossover road intersection of Golf Road, North of Taxiway Echo and Delta and South of Taxiway Foxtrot and Delta. Demolition and construction is occurring in a single phase forcing commercial and privately owned vehicle traffi c entering JBSA-Randolph's South Gate to be re-routed to the West Perimeter Road. The West Perimeter Road detour for drivers is located on the second left entering the South Gate. Traffi c exiting the South Gate will also use West Perimeter Road as a detour route. Traffi c to and from Randolph Oaks golf course is accessible from the South Gate and West Perimeter Road. Airfi eld traffi c is not affected by the project. The outbound lane being used for early morning traffi c is closed from 6-8:30 a.m. until construction is completed. The jogging path close to the construction is closed until the end of the project.

Determination is a valuable quality for any Air Force security forces member and for Senior Airman Dustin Southichack, 902nd Security Forces Squadron entry controller, boxing only reinforces that characteristic in his military and civilian pursuits.

Southichack said he fell in love with boxing shortly after joining the Air Force Reserves 6 years ago, and plans to pursue both as lifelong careers. Southichack has competed on the Air Force Boxing Team since 2012, and his goals include retiring from the Air Force Reserves and becoming a box-ing world champion.

“I’ve experienced a lot of support from my unit and the other members of the Air Force Boxing Team,” Southichack said. “I work hard on my Air Force and boxing careers and my fellow defenders are often the ones to cheer me on.”

Though boxing and Air Force training remain separate most months of the year, Southichack said boxing lends itself to performing his security forces duties.

“Boxing gives me a stronger mindset,” he said. “If I’m given a task, it lends itself to my level of determination to successfully accomplish that task. It also helps me with one on one communication with those coming through the gates.”

After training Southichack for the past fi ve years, Steven Franco, his Air Force Boxing Team and off-season coach, said his work ethic has remained constantly driven.

“I’ve taught him to give his all during every train-ing session and to try to make each day a good day,” Franco said. “He’s one of those people who tries to better themselves in everything he does and gives 100 percent to any task.”

Southichack had both military and martial arts infl u-ences while growing up in the San Antonio area. His

mother was in the Army until her medical discharge due to an injury. Later on, his older brother joined the Air Force, and a year later Southichack followed suit. Southichack and his brother also shared Tai Kwon Do practice as children, which he said has helped him excel in boxing.

“I wanted to join the military for the structure and reliability of the career, especially after seeing it work for my mother and brother,” he said. “I have friends on the civilian and Air Force side that also box and inspire me to push myself to train.”

Southichack’s training schedule includes boxing in the morning and 3.5-mile runs at night at least six days a week. He said he plans to use that training in future Air Force Boxing Team matches and during his upcoming pro debut Jan. 12.

“Even though this fi ght is on my own time, I’ll be representing the Air Force Boxing Team and utiliz-ing all the training I’ve received from them over the years,” he said.

Base safety and security officials want people to be aware of the procedures for driving in and out of Joint Base San Antonio- Randolph's Washington Circle. Officials want to ensure motorists know which lanes they should be in when entering and exiting the circle. The biggest safety issue occurs when vehicles try to directly exit the circle from the left lane instead of moving to the right lane in advance of their exit turn. Officials urge people to drive defensively and use caution in and around Washington Circle.

TRAFFIC RULES FOR WASHINGTON CIRCLE• Traffic entering the circle must yield to traffic already in the circle.• When entering the circle: If you are exiting at the first or second exit, stay in the outside lane or right lane. If you are exiting at the third exit or beyond, use the inside or left lane until ready to exit• If two vehicles are side by side, the vehicle in the outside lane has the right or way.• All traffic must signal for turns when exiting the circle.
