What is the culture and environment like?JON: Most people live in raised leaf houses, and wash their laundry and dishes in the river down the road. Many women are illiterate; men are generally more educated and fluent in Pijin English. We are adjusting to the hot and humid climate and learning to lean on the Lord more and more as we deal with infected sores, fevers, and stomach woes in the family. TESS: People do not obsess over physical appearance. They are happy to share their time and food. I have many opportuni-ties to share my gift of baking with others and have the joy of seeing women start to make money for their families by using their new skills.

What does serving to the ends of the earth mean to you?JON: Two important aspects of witness are dependence upon the Holy Spirit and willingness to suffer together with the church for the sake of Christ. Only with these does going to the ends of the earth entail serving to the ends of the earth. TESS: Serving to the ends of the earth means going where Christ went: to the downhearted, weak, sick, and poor. We are all in need of the Savior, but here the needs are more physically evident. Things like illiteracy keep people from drawing close to God through his word. Domestic abuse keeps families from drawing close to Christ together. When we are open to being used where God places us, He will open our eyes to “the least of these” among us, wherever we are.

SAMS Missionaries Jon and Tess Hicks serve on one of the close to 1000 islands in the Solomons in the tiny village of Bio. Although their family of six lives in a remote place, they are passionate about teaching the next generation of leaders for the church. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

Called Once Again:SERVING THE LORD TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH

od pierced our hearts with love towards the people in northeast Brazil when my husband Ron and I first visited in 2006. Our love continued to increase with each subsequent annual short-term mission visit, culminating with the knowledge that the Lord was calling us back to be full-time missionaries in João Pessoa, Brazil. We are the only foreigners in our residential building. When we first moved in, a few children asked us, “Você é real?” meaning, “Are you real?” We assured them we are. The area is filled with community, and we are getting involved with the Diocese of Recife. This year the Diocese’s theme is “The year of Love.” We have been clearing local beaches of trash and handing out Gospel music. One unique ministry outreach Ron is involved with is roadside prayer. This is where parishioners hold up signs directing motorists who want prayer to pull over to the side of the road. Prayer teams lean into the open windows of the car or stand with cyclists to pray with them. This is a great outreach for João Pessoa. The traffic is heavy here, which can make driving difficult, and the highways have pedestrians running across four or more lanes of traffic. Horse-drawn carts are on the side of roads, and families of four are on one motor cycle, but this prayer ministry has been reaching the traveling people of the community. We have seen an increase in inquiries, many of whom have never been part of a Gospel-believing church. God has called us once again to a place where we must be completely surrendered to him. Although we are many miles away from our children and grandchildren, we know that we are serving in a place where we can be the Lord’s instruments of his redemptive peace and grace for the in-breaking of the Kingdom of God in the hearts of the people in Brazil.

The motto of every missionary, whether preacher, printer, or school

master, ought to be “Devoted for life.”
