Introduction The New York City Department of Transportation is committed to improving street safety for

children throughout the five boroughs. Local Law 241 of 2017 requires the agency to develop

strategies for enhancing safety within a half mile of at least 50 schools by March 30, 2018 and

every two years thereafter until 2024, and report on their implementation. DOT currently

implements over 100 street redesign projects annually which span the city and collectively fall

within a half mile radius of hundreds of schools. In addition, each year the agency installs nearly

400 speed bumps, at least 50 School Slow Zones, hundreds of traffic signal projects, and

sponsors dozens of safety-related capital projects.

The following report is a sampling of street redesign projects installed within one quarter of a

mile of 100 schools around the city, a tighter radius than required in the local law. This list

includes projects that added pedestrian islands, turn lanes, bicycle lanes, and left turn traffic

signals- all proven traffic safety techniques. Details on these projects are available in the

hyperlinks provided in the following table. DOT looks forward to developing additional safety

improvements in the coming two years and will report on these initiatives in the 2022 report.
