Tower Of Sessions Project Switzerland 2014
The tower of sessions is located in the small town of Soglio in the Swiss Alps. The site has a challenging slope due to the steep formation of the valley. The gradient offers views
over the town and the stunning alpine mountains.
The tower is to be used by students for workshops and exhibitions. The programme of the tower is incorporated
into the overall design concept, allowing for a multipurpose space on each floor.
The tower is situated above the town and can be seen as you walk through the small cobble stone streets and out
into the opening fields. As you walk towards the tower the first thing to notice are the very large timber supporting col-umns. The tower reads a solid timber box being supported off the ground by the columns. You enter the building by a raised platform that guides the user up to the entrance. As you enter you are greeted with a concrete core that goes straight up through all the floors. The core forces the user to go around the sides, this brings them closer to the walls and they can see the wall system that is used. This system
allows for the regulation of light, air, shadow and sound.
Unitarian Church 2014 Stockholm, Sweden
In January of 2014 we went on a class trip to Stockholm, Sweden. The site had spectacular
views that over looked the city of Stockholm. This was to be the location of our church design that
interacted and engaged with the community. The concept of my design was to have a church that created a space for people to reflect and be peaceful. The main space has a night sky ceiling. This was achieved by having pin hole lighting in the roof and a secondary inner wall to form the seating and alter area. By separating the walls
from the roof the ceiling edge appears to be end-less. This perception of a roofless night sky is the
atmosphere I wanted to create.
Food market 2013 Galway, Ireland
The aim of this project was to create a market space from the existing street. The market would be used by the local people selling goods and also to accommodate a
stage performance area. In my design I kept it very simple by having one side stepped and the other side a gentle slope from the
steps to the street level. The steps are used for sellers to display their goods and also as a seating area. The width of the steps was important as they allow for a fish crate to
be placed down and also give comfortable space for sitting. The roof of the market is
made of a series of steel beams. The beams support the canvas roof which can be unrav-elled by a wench. Depending on how far the roof is stretched out it can create a different
space underneath.
Architectural Technology sample work
My thesis project in my final year was to have a full set of completed drawings taken from our joint project with a fourth
year architecture student. The build-ing was to be used as a fish factory in a sea side town of Dublin. The use of the building was very important when we were selecting materials, and how
details should be put together. The fac-tory needed to be easily cleaned, allow good ventilation and to accommodate
access for transportation.
