Welcome to California Miller & Levine Biology Foundations: Reading and Study Guide Workbook! This reading and study guide is an effective tool to support students as they embark on the exciting adventure of discovery. In this workbook, you’ll fi nd:

• Interactive experiences to improve science understanding and reinforce the three-dimensional aspect of learning and thinking.

• Concise chapter summaries which include a focus on the “key” questions and important vocabulary to strengthen comprehension.

• Point-of-use study tips, strategies, and organization tools allow students to self-scaffold, deepening their understanding of key science concepts.

Biology Foundations:Reading and Study Guide Workbook

Lesson Summaries increase comprehension of chapter content and help students review before exams. Includes all concepts relevant to key questions and the California Next Generation Science Standards.

READING TOOLS support students as they read the text.

• Academic Words – Defi nitions and support for words critical for understanding content.

• Main Idea and Details – Identify the main idea of a passage and details that support or illustrate it.

• Cause and Effect – Identify an event (the effect) in the text, as well as the explanation for how it occurred (the cause).

• Compare and Contrast – Focus on the similarities and differences of two or more related objects or events.

• Order of Importance – Identify the most important factor of an event, and then identify the lesser factors.

• Connect to Visuals – Use diagrams, photos, or other visual representations to help understand a passage.

• Active Reading – Think about specifi c strategies involved in making predictions, asking questions, proposing answers, and applying logical reasoning to draw conclusions.

• Use Structure – Use section headings, lists, or other organizational features to help understand the information.

• Apply Prior Knowledge – Relate to the text through students’ experiences or to prior academic knowledge. The goal is to explain and understand a text passage.

• Make Connections – Think about how concepts are related to each other.
