17Teacher’s Guide
This story introduces the characters in the next seven stories. It will need a little more support from the teacher or tutor.
Language includes:
introducing self, talking about likes, things you love
Vocabulary child, children, grandchildren
Ideas for preparation
• Who lives in your street? Do you know other people in your street? Do you say hello?
• Play likes game before reading, or after.
Pre-reading, reading, post-reading
See the general notes at the start of this book.
Language to note
love = like something a lot, ‘the city’ (CBD)
Discussion: extending the text
What other things do you think these people like?
Discussion: about learners’ lives
• What do you like? What do you love? What do you like doing? Do you like shopping? Do you like walking?
• What do your friends like? What do they love?
Extra work on spelling/sounds:
Short vowels: grand, this, Vic, Tom, John, job
With syllable practice: Cassie, shopping, c i ty, family, Natasha, ch i ldren
Long vowel sounds: Grace, reading, Rosa
Long oo: food
CE, CI as S: Grace, city
Surprising spellings: love (sounds like short ‘u’), walking (sounds like ‘or’)
Likes game
• You’ll need pictures from magazines or catalogues that learners can select as ‘things they like’: perhaps pictures of books, TV, a garden, someone cooking, cars, motorbikes, children, cats, someone walking or jogging.
• Go through the pictures and practise the difference between ‘I like books’ (not ‘book’) and ‘I like reading’.
• Now learners take turns to pick up three pictures and introduce themselves, saying, ‘I’m xx and I like x, y and z’.
• For more of a literacy focus, replace the pictures with word cards and repeat, or play a matching game.
