NAME: _____________________________ DATE: _____________________ P5 CHALLENGING ENGLISH LESSON 28: GRAMMAR – CONDITIONAL SENTENCES What are conditional sentences?

The conditional sentence says that an action is reliant on something else.

The two most common conditionals are real and unreal. They are sometimes called if-clauses.

CONDITIONAL TYPE I CONDITIONAL TYPE II The real conditional (often named

1st Conditional) describes situations based on fact.

We use the 1st conditional when it is possible and also very likely that the

condition will be fulfilled.

Example: If I find her address, I’ll send her an invitation.

The unreal conditional (often named 2nd Conditional) describes

unreal or imaginary situations. We use the 2nd conditional when it is

possible but very unlikely that the condition will be fulfilled.

Example: If I found her address, I would send her an invitation.

CONDITIONAL TYPE III 0 CONDITIONAL

The 3rd conditional is used to express no possibility of something having happened

in the past. We use the 3rd conditional when it is impossible that the condition will be fulfilled because it refers to the past.

Example: If I had found her address, I would have sent her an invitation.

The zero conditional is used to express absolute certainty.

Example: If I don’t wear my glasses, I can’t see.

NOTE… If the if-clause comes first, a comma is usually used. If the if-clause comes second, there is no need for a comma.

Examples: If you eat too much, you will be fat. You will be fat if you eat too much

What is wrong with these sentences? Correct them.

1. If I had scored above 80 marks for my test I would not have had to attend

remedial lessons.

2. My grandmother beats me, if I show disrespect to my parents. 1ST CONDITIONAL The 1st conditional is used to express situations based on fact in the present or future (things which may happen).

We always use the ________________ tense in the if-clause.

We use the ________________ tense in the main clause.

The if-clause describes a possible event or situation.(‘I see you tomorrow’)

The main clause describes a consequence of the possible event or situation.(‘I buy you a drink’)

Example: I will buy you a drink if I see you tomorrow. (main clause) (if-clause) If I see you tomorrow, I will buy you a drink. (if-clause) (main clause) Sometimes we use ‘unless’ to replace ‘if…not’.

(if-clause) (main clause) Unless you hand in your homework, I won’t mark it. If you don’t hand in your homework, I won’t mark it.

(main clause) (if-clause) I won’t mark your homework unless you hand it in. I won’t mark your homework if you don’t hand it in.

Remember… We will never use ‘will’ or ‘won’t’ in the if-clause. Why are these statements called real conditionals?? Because these statements are possible and likely!!

It is possible and likely that I will have time, or that I will go to England, therefore the

conditions are real.

Examples: If I have time today, I will phone my friend. If I go to England, I will buy some Cheddar cheese. Fill in the blanks.

1. If Jane studies hard, she ________________________ (get) good grades.

2. If I eat too much, I ________________________ (get) fat.

3. If we don’t study, we ________________________ (not get) good grades.

4. If he watches too much television, he ________________________ (become) lazy.

2nd CONDITIONAL The 2nd conditional is used to express unreal situations in the present or future. Often used to express a wish.

We always use the ______________________ tense in the if-clause.

We use ‘ ____________ ’ + __________________ in the main clause. Example:

If I won the lottery, I would buy a new house. (if-clause) (main clause)

I would buy a new house if I won the lottery. (main clause) (if-clause)

Remember… We will never use ‘would’ or ‘wouldn’t’ in the if-clause. Why are these statements called unreal conditionals?? Because these statements are possible but unlikely!!

It is possible but unlikely that I am you, or that I

have more time, therefore the conditions are unreal.

Examples: If I were you, I wouldn’t do that. If I had more time, I would work more on my websites. Fill in the blanks.

1. If the Chelsea ______________________ (win) another championship, Roberto

______________________ (fly) into London for the celebration.

2. I ______________________ (wish) I ______________________ (have) tickets.

3. If they ______________________ (be) available anywhere, I

______________________ (pay) any price for them.

4. If he ______________________ (be) a good friend, he ______________________

(buy) them for me.

3rd CONDITIONAL The 3rd conditional is used to express conditions in the past that did not happen. Often used to express criticism or regret.

We always use the ______________________ tense in the if-clause.

We use ‘ ____________________ ’ + ____________________________ in the main clause. Also ‘could have’ or ‘should have’.

Example: If I had worked harder, I would have passed my exam. If I had worked harder, I could have passed my exam. If I had worked harder, I should have passed my exam.

(if-clauses) (main clauses)

Page 4: Sample Challenging English Worksheet

P5 Challenging English Lesson 28: In-Class Worksheet

I would have passed my exam if I had worked harder. I could have passed my exam if I had worked harder. I should have passed my exam if I had worked harder.

(main clauses) (if-clauses)

Remember… We will never use ‘would have’ or ‘wouldn’t have’ in the if-clause. Why are these statements impossible?? Because the events they refer to actually happened or

It is impossible for the conditions to be fulfilled as I helped you so you

didn’t fail, and it was not sunny so we didn’t go out.

did not happen and we cannot go back to the past!!

Examples: If I hadn’t helped you, you would have failed. If it had been sunny, we could have gone out. Fill in the blanks.

1. If the SAF Warriors _______________________________ (win), Aunt Lee

would have been _______________________________ (be) rich.

2. I _______________________________________ (not jail) if I

_______________________________ (not rob) the bank.

3. If I _______________________________ (know) you were coming, I

_______________________________ (bake) a cake.

4. If she _______________________________ (bet) that much money on the Bulls,

she and Uncle Chester _______________________________ (retire).

0 CONDITIONAL The zero conditional is used to express general truths and facts (often things based on scientific fact).

We always use the _____________________________ tense in the if-clause and mail clause.

Example: If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.

(if-clause) (main clause)

Water boils if you heat it to 100°C. (main clause) (if-clause) Most zero conditional sentences mean the same thing if ‘when’ is used instead of ‘if’.

(if-clause) (main clause) When you jump, you fall.

If you jump, you fall.

(main clause) (if-clause) You fall when you jump.

You fall if you jump.

Why are these statements 100% certain?? Because these statements are based on science and experiences and express general truths and facts!!

The results of not eating and missing the bus are always the

same, therefore they are always true and absolute certainties.

Examples: If people don’t eat, they get hungry. If I miss the 7 o’clock bus, I am late for school. Fill in the blanks.

1. The dog ______________ (be) always happy when Dad ______________ (stay)

home.

2. If the sun ______________ (shine) all day, it ______________ (get) hot.

3. If Judita ______________ (work) hard, she ______________ (get) good grades.

4. If the monsoon season ______________ (set) in, it ______________ (rain) almost

every day.
