Dear Madam/Sir, I write to strongly support Nikolai Tolstik in conjunction with his application
to travel grant from Norwegian PhD Network on Nanotechnology for Microsystems. Nikolai Tolstik intends to attend the upcoming Advanced Solid State Lasers Confrence that will be held in Berlin, Germany, October 4 – 9, 2015.
This annual conference held by Optical Society of America became one of the most important events in laser physics research, bringing together the scientists working in the fields of novel optical materials and laser sources with industry representatives and specialists in applications.
The program covers the whole spectrum of solid-state lasers topics – the breakthroughs in materials research, applied science and design innovations plus new materials, components, fabrication techniques and design alternatives to enhance laser performance. Special attention is given to the sources operating in extremely important mid-infrared spectral
The submission of Nikolai Tolstik entitled “Octave-spanning Supercontinuum From As2S3-silica Double-nanospike Waveguide Pumped by Femtosecond Cr:ZnS Laser at 2.35 µm” was accepted for oral presentation. This work is a first result of a recently settled international collaboration with a group of Prof. Philipp Russell from the Max Planck University for the Science of Light in Erlangen, Germany. The collaboration is currently running without any dedicated funding, which would make it possible to cover the travel expenses of Nikolai.
The topic of Nikolai’s presentation directly corresponds to the scope of NanoNetwork. He works on application of an optical nanodevice, namely “nanospike” – submicrometer-scale advanced optical waveguide with a specially designed nanoscale light coupling interface, used for mid-infrared optical supercontinuum generation. The initial experiments were very successful and resulted in demonstration of an octave-spanning supercontinuum. The work has been accepted
