Based on the excellent feedback from last year, Gujarati Samaj of Detroit organized its second annual educational seminar on Saturday, May 31, 2008. The SAT / ACT Educational Seminar was organized in co-operation with Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions and Jain Samaj to help high school students in preparing for the real tests.
More than 40 kids participated in the free seminar. This year, many non-members also took advantage of the seminar, giving GSOD more visibility in the community. Crystal Dacho, High School Programs Relationship Manager from Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions proctored the SAT & ACT combo test, which was half the length of the actual test. After the tests, there was a workshop seminar for students and parents in which she gave a number of helpful hints and answered any and all questions from the audience. Kaplan has a number of free events as well as classes that will help students prepare for their ACT, SAT and PSAT tests. More information can be found by calling 1-800-KAPTEST or visiting www.kaptest.com.
We have received a lot of positive feedback from the participants and their parents about the seminar. Please send any feedback and/or suggestions for other similar events to [email protected] or any of the EC members. We would like to organize more such events which benefit the youth. GSOD would like to thank Jain Samaj for letting us use their facility, Ms. Crystal Dacho for her time and input, and all the kids and parents who made this a very successful event. -Jesal Shah

Mothers/Fathers Day Celebrations! On June 14, 2008—For the first time in the history of GSOD, Samaj celebrated Mothers Day & Fathers Day! The action packed night was attended by many Samaj patrons at UAW hall in Sterling Heights. Ashish Tikiwala, our EC president managed to get a great entertainment group (based in India) for that special night. It was fantastic! Great Gujarati entertainment, indeed.
Mayuriben from Mayuri & Minaxi Group - a popular Gujarati Stand-up comedian rocked the UAW hall with funny & genuine jokes. The mood in the hall was very much jubilant with the easy going good humor. The comedy night was also showered with melodious music and singing by guess who? Mayuriben & party, Indeed! Wow, she can sing in several celebrity voices! The music group consisted some of the popular EC ‘Executive band’ guys as well. Darshan Parikh on tabla/dholak and Kuldip Bhatt on Octapad. Bhai, kamaal kar diya aap sub ne’!
Want proof on how it went, you could see many members dancing & singing together—see photos on GSOD website— www.gsod.org/mf

Dhamachakdi Thandai
Gujarat History
Archaeological discoveries have linked Gujarat with the Indus valley civilization (c.3,000-1,500 BC) and have suggested that it was a part of the Mauryan empire (c.320-185 BC). The Gujarat region was the center of Jainism under the Rajput Caulukya dynasty (11th-12th cent.), which fell (1298) to the Delhi Sultanate. In 1390, Gujarat became an independent sultanate. Its immense wealth invited attack, and in 1509 the Portuguese wrested from it the colony of Diu (Daman and Diu ). In 1572 the sultanate was annexed to the Mughal empire. The Marathas were powerful in the area in the first half of the 18th cent. The British East India Company took over control of the region in 1818. Under the British much of the region retained its local princely rulers. In 1947 the region was organized into the state of Bombay. Bombay state was divided into the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra in 1956.
Ingredients:
2 1/2 cup Water 2 tblsp Fennel Seed (Saunf) 1/2 tsp Cardamom Seed (Elaichi) 4 whole Cloves (Lavang) 2/3rd cup Raisins (Kishmish) 1/2 cup blanched and chopped Almond (Badam) 1/4th cup chopped Pistachio (Pista) 1/4th cup Melon seeds, Sunflower seeds or Pine Nuts 1 ltr Milk (Doodh) 1/4th tsp dry-roasted and powdered Saffron (Kesar) threads
How to make Thandai:
1. Bring the water to boil in a small saucepan.
2. Add the fennel seeds, cardamom and cloves, cover, and remove from the heat.
3. Set aside for ten minutes.
4. Place the raisins, almonds, pistachios and melon seeds, sunflower seeds, or pine nuts in a bowl and add fennel tea.
5. Cover and set aside for at least 1 hour.
6. Transfer it to a blender, cover, and blend until the nuts & spices are reduced to a smooth texture.
7. Pour into a strainer and set over a bowl.
8. When some of liquid had drained through the sieve, gather the corners and squeeze tightly to extract the maximum liquid.
9. Heat 2 tblsp of milk and add saffron.
10. Combine the nut milk, saffron milk and remaining milk in a large jug and chill well.
11. Serve over a crushed ice.
Removing Garlic/Onion Smell From Fingers
After chopping up onion and garlic, the smell tends to linger on your fingers and hands. To remove the odor try rubbing salt or lemon juice on wet hands, concentrating on the finger tip and nail area where odor tends to linger.
What is yoga?
The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. We can think of the union occurring between the mind, body and spirit.

Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT)
Recognizing the potential of the State as a centre for the financial services industry, the Government of Gujarat formulated a mega project to realize this vision. Approximately 27,000 ha of land between the commercial capital of the State, Ahmedabad, and the Administrative Capital of the State, Gandhinagar, have been earmarked for the development of a Central Finance and Business District (CFBD), Institutional areas, Knowledge parks, Integrated Townships, etc. The CFBD has been named the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT).
GIFT is designed to walk tall with the world’s top finance centres. Modern in every aspect, GIFT will be developed on a minimum land area of 500 acres, with a built-up area potential of up to 75 million sq. ft. And that’s just the first phase. The next phase will see the development of townships around the City and with the same
perfection. This will make it the first financial centre of its kind in the region.
