Betsy secretly asks Tim what he would do if Sam came back. Tim said that he would be quiet about it and Betsy told Tim that Sam might return soon.

When Sam returned, Betsy gave Tim a slight nod.

Chapter 4

Rebels come and ask father for his gun. Father argues and gets bullied by the soldiers.

Chapter 4

Tim quickly goes to the Warrups’ Shack and finds Sam sleeping with the gun. Tim tries to steal the gun, but Sam wakes up. Sam chases Tim and soon catches him.

Chapter 4

Tim explains that father is being bullied by the Rebel soldiers. Sam returns with Tim, but the soldiers were not there. Father sees Sam and Sam sees Father. Sam runs away.

The effects of war are starting to show up. Food shortages and no guns.

Chapter 5

One day, Mr. Heron comes to the Meekers and asks Tim to run an errand for him. Father rejects the offer.

Chapter 5

Tim wants to participate a lot so he lies to Father that he is going fishing and decides to run the errand for Mr. Heron.

Chapter 6

Mr. Heron comes to the tavern, and Tim tells him that he will take the errand.

Chapter 6

Tim lies to Father that he is going fishing the whole day, and goes to Mr. Heron to get the letter.

Tim runs into Betsy near the beginning of his trip.

Chapter 6

Tim and Betsy fight over the letter. Betsy thinks that the letter may endanger Sam. Betsy soon steals the letter and opens it. It reads, “If this message is received, then we will know that the messenger is reliable.”

Sam sends several letters home and mother and father argue about sending replies.

Father’s annual trip to Verplancks Point is nearing and Tim is the only other person Father can bring, since Sam is away with the war.

Cow-boys attack Father, but helpers come and escourt them to their cousins home.

Tim and Father discuss the war with Tim’s cousins.

Tim and Father arrive at Verplancks point and father does his business with the cattle.

On the way back, there is a heavy snowstorm, and they finally arrive back at their cousin’s house.

Chapter 9

Tim and Father trudge through the snow, and father moves up ahead to scout for cowboys.

Father doesn’t return and Tim starts to worry.

Tim thinks about what Sam and Father would to. Tim chooses father’s actions and brings the cattle back home to survive the winter.

Chapter 9

On the way home, Tim encounters the cowboys. The cowboys are scared because the escourt might come soon. A dog barks and they are scared so they run away and leave Tim alone.

Chapter 10

Tim becomes the man of the house, and Tim becomes more adult like in a matter of few days. He works a lot to maintain the tavern.

Tim realizes he is more of a Tory once Father disappeared when the British Army asked if Tim was scared of him.

Chapter 10

The war gets more violent near Redding. British troops storm into Captain Bett’s house. There are wounded men so Tim runs to Dr. Hobart, the docter’s, house. On his way, he sees the brutality of the British Army, and loses sympathy for them.

Chapter 11

Captain Arnold is coming to Redding

Tim is happy because he might meet Sam again.

Chapter 11

Tim and Sam reunite. They talk about Father’s capture. Sam tried to rescue Father, but has failed.

Chapter 11

The mother meets Sam and tells Sam not to go back. Sam says that he will stay in the war.

Mother learns about father’s death.

Sam returns home. He warns Tim about cattle thieves and tells him to butcher them up.

Sam also tells Tim that General Putnam will hang anyone for stealing as an example.

Chapter 12

One day, Sam spots cattle thieves and runs after them. The scared men captured Sam and reported him to General Putnam as cattle thief.

Chapter 13

Tim goes to meet Colonel Parsons, but he is asleeps so he goes back home and prays with his mother that Sam will be ok.

The next day, the Mother dresses up well and goes to see General Putnam about the execution. The General refuses letting Sam go. She returns home and begins to drink a lot, and even more in the following days.

Tim pesters Colonel Parsons for a note to General Putnam. In the end, the Colonel gives Tim the note. Tim explains Sam’s situation and the General says that he will consider letting him go. Also, Tim gets to meet Sam one last time before his execution.

Chapter 14

General Putnam refuses Sam’s release yet again.

Tim is furious and decides to do something about it.

Tim goes to the encampment with the bayonet. He sees the sleeping guard and decides to kill him to unlock the doors. When Tim had the perfect chance, he could not kill the guard, and he wakes up. Tim runs away but with a scratch on his shoulder.

Tim goes to the execution. He sees the hanging, and then it is Sam’s turn. Sam gives Tim a forced grin. Tim then watches as Sam is shot to death.
