2019 QUICK FACTS

BEARKAT ATHLETIC MEDIA RELATIONS

WITH A BEARKAT WIN ...- K.C. Keeler would win his 227th career game. He is currently 15th all-time among FCS head coaches, 6 wins ahead of former Wofford coach Mike Ayers and former SHSU coach Ron Randleman. He is 3 wins behind former Ohio State and Youngstown State head coach Jim Tressell for 14th all-time among coaches who spent at least 10 years at FCS schools. Keeler’s 226 victories are the second most among active coaches in the FCS behind only Al Bagnoli of Columbia.

- Keeler would also win his 53rd game as head coach of the Bearkats and would move into sole possession of eighth in the all-time among Southland Conference coaches, breaking a tie with former ULM head man Pat Collins. His 53rd win would also put him just 1 win back of J.W. Jones for third place all-time at SHSU.

- Sam Houston would pick up its fourth straight win in a home opener, not having fallen in a home opener since a 49-46 loss to Lamar in 2015. Following that loss, the Bearkats reeled off 21 consecutive home victories in a row, the second longest home win streak in program history and a streak that was the longest in the nation at the time it was snapped last season vs North Dakota.

- The Bearkats would avoid fallng to 0-2 to open a season for just the third time since 1998.

LEFTOVERS FROM A 39-31 LOSS AT NEW MEXICO- Dee Bowens’ 65-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter was the longest catch of his career, surpassing his 64-yard touchdown vs Southeastern Louisiana in 2018. He finished with 105 yards receiving in the first half and 130 for the game, marking the fourth career 100-game for the sophomore after he closed 2018 with 100 yards in 3 of his final 4 games.

- Connor Crow’s 46-yard field goal was the first of his career and tied the longest field goal by a Bearkat since 2015.

- The Kats finished with 539 yards of total offense. It is the first time the Kats have dropped a game when totaling at least 500 yards of offense since falling to Texas Tech in 2015 despite racking up 637 yards that day.

- Nathan Stewart hauled in 6 catches for 71 yards against the Lobos. He now needs 12 more catches to become the fourth Bearkat in program history and the ninth player in Southland Conference history with 200 career catches.

- Despite the Lobos racking up 39 points in the opener, the Bearkat defense still held New Mexico to just 1-for-15 on third downs for the game.

- Kyran Jackson’s 31-yard run in the fourth quarter was a career long for the junior and the longest run by a Bearkat since Corey Avery in 2017.

- In addition to outgaining the Lobos 558-485, the Kats also finished the game with an edge in first downs (27-20) and in time of possession (33:48 - 26-12). Of the Kats’ 27 first dows, 19 came through the air.

- SHSU split time at the quarterback spot with Ty Brock and Eric Schmid each seeing significant time. Brock finished with 258 yards passing for the game while Schmid had 185, marking the first time the Kats have had a pair of 150-passers in a game since Jared Johnson (240) and Jeremiah Briscoe (207) vs Nicholls in 2015.

- The Kats are now 3-29 all-time vs FBS opponents dating back to 1987. Along with defeating New Mexico in Albuquerque in 2011, the Kats also own a 20-9 win over ULM in 2001 and a 21-14 over Louisiana in 2000.

MORE BEARKAT BYTES GOING INTO 2019- The Kats have had a player rank in the top 5 in the nation (FCS) in total sacks in each of the past 3 seasons (Derick Roberson 2018, Chris Stewart 2017, PJ Hall 2016).

- Ty Brock was one of four Bearkats to throw for a touchdown in 2018, along with Mike Dare, Eric Schmid and Ryan Humphries. Each of those players are on the roster for 2019 (Dare out for season with preseason injury) after a 2018 season that was the first time since 1975 that SHSU sported a roster with 4 or more players with a TD pass. That season Guido Merkens had 4 TD passes, while Steve Albritton, Mike Havard and James Oliphant all had 1 each.

- Kyran Jackson put together a breakout sophomore campaign that saw him become the first Bearkat RB to total 800 rushing and 250 receiving yards in a season since Keshawn Hill in 2014.

- Kyran Jackson became the first Bearkat in program history to have 100+ rushing and 100+ receiving yards in a single game at Northwestern State in 2018, and the first SLC player to do so since McNeese’s Toddrick Pendland achieved the feat in the Cowboys’ road upset over then No. 2 Appalachian State in 2009. He finished the year as 1 of just 2 players in the FCS to reach in 2018, joined by Terrence Stephens Jr. of Robert Morris who also did it on the same day against Duquesne.

- If recent history is any indication, a big year could be in store for a member of the SHSU running back corps. Kyran Jackson led the team with 809 yards on the ground a year ago, but it hasn’t been since the 2009 and 2010 seasons that Sam Houston State has gone consecutive seasons without a running back posting 1,000 yards.

SERIES HISTORY

THIS WEEK IN THE SOUTHLAND

BEARKAT BREAKDOWN

- The Kats entered the season without a kicker with a made field goal in his D-1 career. Connor Crow got his first with a 46-yard field goal vs New Mexico on Saturday.

- The Kats return each of their top two leaders in tackles from 2018 in linebackers Hunter Brown and Royce See, who combined for 177 tackles a year ago. Each has been named to the preseason all-SLC second team.

- SHSU returns 5 players who picked off at least 1 pass in 2018, including 9 of the 11 total interceptions from a year ago.

- With its win in the 2018 finale at Houston Baptist, the Kats secured closing out the regular season with a victory for the fifth straight season, not having lost a regular season-finale since a 49-31 loss at Central Arkansas in 2013.

- Following its loss at UIW last year, the Bearktas fell out of the STATS FCS Top 25 poll. It snapped a streak of 55 consecutive weeks for the Bearkats within the Top 25 poll. The Kats fell out of the top 10 after its early-season loss to North Dakota, which was the first poll released without the Kats ranked inside the top 10 since Nov. 9, 2015.

- It’s no secret that the Kats have been an offensively-powered team in recent years, but the team achieved something that has not been done in over 30 years in the FCS in 2017. Portland State led the country in total offense in 1978, 1979 and 1980, the first three years of FCS play after Division I split for the 1978 season. Since then, no school had led the country in total offense in consecutive seasons until the Bearkats joined them by doing so in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

- The Kats are 19-11 all-time in the FCS playoffs and own the country’s third-best winning percentage (.655) in the playoffs, qualify-ing for the FCS playoffs 11 times in its history. - With 2 playoff victories in 2017 at Bowers Stadium the Kats moved to 13-0 all-time in playoff games played in Huntsville. The Kats had played, and won, at least 1 home playoff game in each of the previous 7 seasons prior to missing the playoffs in 2018.

- K.C. Keeler is 27-0 in his career in home playoff games. Between his stops at Rowan, Delaware and Sam Houston the Bearkat head man has never had his team drop a game on its home turf. His Bearkat squads are 6-0 at Bowers Stadium in 4 playoff appearances. He was 8-0 in home playoff games at Delaware and 13-0 at Rowan.

BEARKATS NAME TEAM CAPTAINSThe Kats put it to a vote prior to the season, as is custom, and named their team captains at the end of the final week of fall camp. Four seniors - Hunter Brown, Royce See, Tyler Edwards and Tucker Addington - each earned the honor. Each of those selected are in their fourth year in the program.

KATS GAIN STABILITY WITH OFFENSIVE COORDINATORSHSU has been synonymous with offense in the Keeler era, but the Kats will finally have some consistency calling the plays for the first time in recent memory in 2019. Ryan Carty left New Hampshire and took over as offensive coordinator in 2018 and now returns for his second year directing the Bearkat offense. In 2018 he was the third offensive coordinator the Kats had in a three-year span with Phil Longo having left to take the OC job at Ole Miss after the 2016 season, and Tim Cramsey leaving for the same job at Marshall after 2017.

BATTLE OF THE PINEY WOODS ENTERS 10TH YEAR AT NRG STADIUMIn one of the oldest rivalries in all of college football, the Battle of the Piney Woods has raged on for nearly a decade at NRG Stadium, the home of the Houston Texans. In a joint effort between SHSU, Stephen F. Austin and Lone Star Sports & Entertainment, the game was moved to Houston beginning in 2010. The Lumberjacks took that game, but since then the Bearkats have taken each of the last 8 meetings. Entering its 10th year at NRG Stadium, the Kats’ 8-game win streak is the longest in the history of the series by either team and has run SHSU’s record to 55-35-2 vs SFA over the course of the rivalry.

KATS ADD KEY TRANSFERS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALLTwo areas of need for SHSU entering 2019 was in the backfield and on the defensive line, both of which the Kats addressed via the transfer market. At running back, the Kats added Toneil Carter from Texas where he played in nine games in 2017 before redshirting in 2018 after a prep career at Langham Creek HS that saw him earn all-America from numerous outlets. On the defensive line, the Kats lost a pair of Buck Buchanan Award runners-up in PJ Hall and Derick Roberson over the past 2 years, but made a big splash with the addition of Trace Mascorro. The Refugio native is a big get for the Kats after playing each of the past 2 seasons at UTEP. He played in 24 games, earning Freshman all-CUSA honors in 2017.

OFFENSIVE LINE LOOKING TO REMAIN IN TACT IN 2019The Sam Houston State offensive line returned 4 of 5 starters for 2018; however, the injury bug struck early and forceful early in the season and continued throughout the year. Only one offensive lineman - senior Tristan Wendt - made it through the year unscathed, playing in all 11 games. That came after a 2017 season that saw the Kats start the same 5 offensive linemen in all 14 games on their way to the semifinals of the FCS playoffs.

This year the Kats are optimistic the line can stay in tact with transfers Bryce Wilds (SMU) and Eleasah Anderson (Baylor) joining the fray after starting a combined 11 games on the FBS level a year ago. SHSU will also get back tackle Sam Spencer who started all 14 games in 2017 before being lost for the season in the 2018 season opener vs Prairie View.

BACK IN THE RANKINGSWhen the national polls were unveiled prior to the start of the seaosn, the Kats were where they have become accustomed in recent years, as a ranked team. They finished 2018 as an unranked team, despite going 6-5, but after enter the season ranked No. 23 in the STATS FCS poll and No. 22 in the NCAA Coaches poll, they enter this week vs OPSU still in the national rankings. It is the eighth straight season SHSU has begun a season ranked in the STATS FCS poll, last opening a year unranked in 2011.
