Products/ServicesWhat are the main products or services

your organizations provide? We provide safe, reliable, affordable

electricity.Who are your primary customers or

clients?Member-owners in each respective service

area. How are your products made or your

services performed? The cooperatives purchase electricity from

their power supplier, Wabash Valley Power Association (WVPA), and distribute it to nearly 26,500 members throughout northeast Indiana.

How have your products or services changed/improved in recent years?

Electricity is the same no matter where you purchase it. Our service is what sets us apart from others. Phones are answered by a live person, with no phone tree to navigate. Our response to power outages is quick and efficient. Each cooperative has an energy advisor on staff to help educate members about the efficient use of electricity. We provide free residential energy audits for members.

We have rebates and incentives to help members defer the cost to install efficient lighting, heating/cooling equipment and water heating. We also offer refrigerator/freezer

recycling. These and others are all offered through our Power Moves program.

What quality or service standards or awards have you received?

In the ACSI (American Customer Satisfaction Index), the three northeast Touchstone Energy Cooperatives, REMCs, have higher “overall satisfaction ratings”’ from their customers, several points above the average for both Investor Owned Utilities (IOUs) and municipals throughout the United States.

Where are your products or services delivered or distributed?

Electricity is delivered to our members throughout our distribution systems, primarily in LaGrange, Noble, Steuben and DeKalb counties.

Company HistoryHow long have your organizations been a

part of the community?LaGrange County REMC, Noble REMC

and Steuben County REMC are Touchstone Energy Cooperatives who have been delivering electricity for more than 75 years.

Who are the company’s founders?Community leaders in our rural communities

in each of the cooperative’s counties combined their efforts to establish a Rural Electric

Membership Corporation (REMC). This was supported by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s national REA loan program.

This was a result of the investment-owned utilities (IOUs) choosing not to deliver power to farmers in northeast Indiana.

Who are the current owner?

Current owners of the cooperatives are still the members or individuals who purchase their electricity from the cooperatives.

How have the organizations grown over the years?

The service territorial boundaries were set many years ago by the Indiana Utility Regula-tory Commission. The cooperatives grow when businesses and people build within the REMC’s service territories.

What changes have been significant in the growth of these organizations?

Expansion of cities and towns into the rural areas of the county.

EmployeesHow many employees do your organiza-

tions have? The three cooperatives combined have 80

employees.

How do the employees contribute to the service, quality and values of your organiza-tions?

The employees are engaged in their coopera-tive. They live and breathe the seven cooperative principles and embody the cooperative spirit.

How do the employees contribute to innovation or the future direction of your organizations?

Employees regularly attend continuing training opportunities to stay abreast of the latest technology within their field.

How do the employees “make a differ-ence” in either the way they do their jobs or in the way they serve their communities?

Employees provide exceptional service to members. They are involved in their local communities and serve on various boards and committees, coach youth sports and are active in local churches.

Do employees have opportunities for continuing education, advancement opportu-nities and recognition?

They regularly attend conferences and training sessions to stay abreast of the latest technologies and business practices, attend monthly safety meetings and attend section meetings of their peers at Indiana Electric Cooperatives in Indianapolis. Employees can participate in certification programs, including the cooperative’s own “Rural Electric Leaders in Training Exchange” leadership program.

Ten years later, Camoplast opened its blow-molding facility, Airtek, in Kingsburry, Canada. Camoplast then acquired Crocker Ltd.’s blow-molding facilities in Michigan, bringing their experience into the U.S.

In 2012, there was a desire to foster the growth of the Polymer Solutions division within Camoplast Solideal. That desire let to the establishment of Exo-s, which is owned by our manage-ment team and CRCD, an investment fund managed by Desjardins Venture Capital.

Exo-s Today:

Today we have facili-ties in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Current U.S. manufacturing operations include Coldwater, Michigan, and Howe, Indiana. Come and see what Kendallville has

to offer!

Products/ServicesWhat are the main products or services

your organization provides? The Kendallville Area Chamber of

Commerce provides promotion, communi-cation and networking opportunities for our members. Contracted by the city of Kendall-ville, the chamber also promotes Kendall-ville as a great place to live, work and play for relocating new businesses, families and promoting tourism to our area.

Who are your primary customers or clients?

Members of the Kendallville Area Chamber of Commerce and community events.

How are your products made or your services performed?

Various forms of media are used to promote and communicate events and announcements of our members, including rRadio, newspaper, website and email. Many events are hosted by the chamber throughout the year to bring members together to network with each other.

How have your products or services changed/improved in recent years?

New events have been added, and our new, user-friendly website has an enhanced member directory, complete with a Google

map to take people right to our members’ doors. It shows more resources by providing economic development links to describe and promote our community.

Where are your products or services delivered or distributed?

We are one of five chambers in Noble County. Our marketing services are delivered to the Kendallville area.

Company History1. How long has your organization been

a part of the community? The chamber was founded on Oct. 6,

1925. It has always been located downtown Kendallville.

Who is the organization’s founder? In the United States, the first chamber

of commerce was created in 1768 in New York City. Its stated objectives encompassed “encouraging commerce, supporting industry, adjusting disputes relative to trade

and navigation, and producing such laws and regulations as may be found necessary for the benefit of trade in general.”

Who is the current owner?

The Kendallville Area Chamber is a member organization that currently has 16 board members. Board members represent the professional, service, industrial, retail and agricultural business categories. Two are permanent media positions, held by the local newspaper and radio station.

How has the organization grown over the years?

In 2012, we added a representative from the agriculture industry on our board to represent the large number of farm businesses in the area. Our chamber membership overall has seen a 10 percent increase in the past five years. We’re seeing members come back that had most recently dropped, and we foresee them staying long-term. Many of our industrial members are seeing significant growth that began last year. However, 75 percent of our members

are small service and retail businesses with one to 10 employees.

What changes have been significant in the growth of this company?

Face-to-face communication with our members has been very well received. We deliver new and renewing membership folders to our members every year. This personal touch gives the staff a chance to “check in” with our members’ concerns and needs. We take a few minutes to go over some of our membership benefits, remind them of our upcoming events and make sure they have enough Member-to-Member discount cards for each of their employees.

The new Member-to-Member program began in 2014, in which members offer specials or discounts to other chamber member employees. This program promotes buying local and is an additional free employee benefit. It is included with their chamber membership dues.

EmployeesHow many employees does your organi-

zation have? The Kendallville Area Chamber is one of

five chambers in Noble County. We are the largest, with two full-time and one part-time staff.

“Many manufacturing facilities in the United States today are cleaner than most offices or doctors’ office waiting rooms. They are gleaming showrooms of the latest technologies. And they are staffed by highly-skilled and well-edu-cated professionals producing the most exciting breakthroughs of our time, such as advances in robotics, automation and 3D printing.”

— Making Manufacturing Cool, U.S. News and World Reports, March 21, 2014

OK, aside from the fact that manufac-turing is clean, safe and utilizes the latest technology anywhere, why is manufac-turing cool? Consider the following economic contribution made by manufac-turing in northeast Indiana:

County / total number of jobs /manufacturing number of jobs /percentage of total /average wages /manufacturing average wages /percentage of total

Economic Analysis Data)According to the most recent data,

manufacturing represents four out of every 10 jobs in northeast Indiana. On average, manufacturing wages are 125 percent of the average wage in northeast Indiana. What’s more, manufacturing has a long, diverse and inspiring history in northeast Indiana.

• Established in 1866, Flint & Walling in downtown Kendallville is arguably the longest continuously operating manufac-turing facility in northeast Indiana.

• Steel Dynamics, established in Butler, Indiana, in 1993, began produc-tion at its flat-roll mill in 1996 — in part, securing steel production’s future in the U.S.A.

• The Northern Indiana Woodcrafters Association in LaGrange manufacturers heirloom furniture pieces that will be enjoyed by families for generations.

• Vestil Manufacturing Corporation is an industry leader in the manufacturing and distributing of industrial material handling equipment, with over 1,000 product lines.

We’ve just scratched the surface. We could go on to explain the history of the Cord and Duesenberg companies, the wealth of design and production occurring in northeast Indiana that supports today’s automobiles and the hundreds of other products made here every day. It would blow your hair back!
