Congratulations!!You’ve finally done it.

You’re a High School Graduate.

You’ve got the world in the palmof your hands.

1007 Koala Drive, Omak WA 98841509.826.6191 or 866.826.6191

Keep it there by knowing the facts. DAWN estimates there were 56,978 alcohol-related emergency department visits forpatients aged 12 to 17 and 88,781 alcohol-related emergency department visits for patientsaged 18 to 20. One bottle (12 oz.) of beer has the same amount of alcohol as 1 ounce of hard liquor Alcohol is a drug. It alters your mind, body and emotions. According to the Marin Institute,it is also our nations largest youth drug problem, killing 6.5 times as many young people asillicit drugs combined.

If you or someone you know needs help, call us.We’ll be there when you do

Graduation is a short timeaway and at that time you willhear a speech.

In the speech you will mostlikely hear the cliche of how everystudent is going a separate path.Listen to that speech, andremember something else.

It has been said that life is ahyphen. Someday, when you die, someone will walk by yourheadstone and see your name.

Under your name will be yourbirthdate and your death date. Thehyphen between those dates willsummarize your life.

It’s the valedictorian’s job totell you about life after high schoolso you can remember, not somuch to do your best in life, but torealize that life is a hyphen.

The rest of our lives will go byas fast as our school lives havegone by so far.

To realize how fast life goes byis the first step to living asuccessful life.

Some people will measuresuccess by the amount of moneymade. That isn’t right. All thatmoney isn’t so good after you die,and we all do die.

Success in a person is usuallyrecognized only after they’ve died. It’s a “you don’t know what you’vegot ‘til it’s gone” thing.

Success is measured by yourpart in someone else’s life.Recognize that life is short, andknow that if you blink it could betoo late to help someone else.

I’d like to mention someonewho knew this philosophy well.

My friend, Conner JayKnoblich, lived an adventurous lifeand, in my opinion, experiencedsuccess.

He visited different parts of theworld, and mostly he used his giftof humor to make others aroundhim laugh.

You’ll find a hyphen on his

headstone.His hyphen describes a life

lived to its fullest. His memory is left behind in

the hearts of those people hetouched, those people he loved, and those people who loved him.

Conner never got the chance tograduate, but because he knew the“Hyphen Rule,” Conner didn’tneed a diploma to tell him hesucceeded.

The best of his life is leftbehind in us, in our hearts. That isa successful life.

Conner’s hyphen separates asmall number of years.

We may live a much longer life. Will we make the lives of othersbetter because we have lived?

If you live your life with that inmind, in my opinion, you’vesucceeded.

That’s it. That’s my point. Ihope you take it to heart. Live lifelike it’s a hyphen and you’llaccomplish success and experiencesatisfaction.

I would like to dedicate this tothe memory of my friend, Conner,

and in hopes that every graduateapplies his example to life.

Brent Jacobson, a senior atOkanogan High School, is the son ofDaryl Jacobson and Sher Sype ofOkanogan.

OLYMPIA — Parents can savefor college by enrolling in theWashington GuaranteedEducation Tuition program.

Over the past decade, tuition atWashington colleges has increasedan average of 8 percent a year, with family income andinvestments falling behind, according to the Office of theSuperintendent of PublicInstruction.

Parents who hope to see theirchildren graduate from collegewithout assuming large debt canset aside cash to save on futurecosts. If trends continue, oneyear’s tuition and state-mandatedfees costing $7,600 now willamount to more than $36,000 ayear when today’s newborn isheads to campus.

GET was established by theLegislature in 1998 to helpfamilies save for increased costs.

According to state officials, 100GET units purchased now areguaranteed to be equal to thefuture cost of a year’s resident,

undergraduate tuition and state-mandated fees at Washington’smost expensive public universities— the University of Washingtonand Washington State University.

“This parity holds truewhenever your child is ready forcollege, even if tuition doubles ortriples in that time,” according toOSPI.

GET accounts can be used

anywhere in the country to paytuition at colleges, universities orvocational schools, whether publicor private. The value of GET unitsis based on tuition atWashington’s highest pricedpublic university.

If a chosen school costs more, the student pays the difference. Ifit costs less, extra units can beused toward other costs such as

room, board and books. If a child gets a scholarship or if

plans change, GET units can betransferred to other familymembers, put on hold or refunded.

GET accounts offer tax-freegrowth and withdrawals. They arenot subject to the ups and downsof the stock market, state officials

said.Payments can be made

monthly, in a sum or whenevermoney is available. Friends andrelatives also can contribute.

GET units must be held for twoyears before use and will not showincreased value until held for fourto five years.

OMAK – When it comes timeto move away to college, there arethings that can make theexperience easier.

• Don’t put off packing ormoving until the last minute.

If you need to rent a truck ortrailer, be sure to reserve it early.

Try to move on a weekday, since weekends are the busiestmoving days.

• Pack smart.Move only what you need. Load

heaviest items first.Boxes, packing tape, bubble

wrap, moving blankets and handtrucks are also essential to keepingyour belongings safer and makingyour move easier.

Consider donating unneededitems to charities.

• Be safe.To avoid injury, always bend

your knees and lift with your legs.Don’t text or talk on your cell

phone while driving. While stopped for breaks, park

in highly visible, well-lit areas andalways lock all doors.

If you’re using a moving truck, remember that it is taller, widerand heavier than cars or SUVs, sodrive a bit slower and take extracare when making turns, drivingunder overhangs or near low treebranches.

• Have fun.Keep a positive attitude during

the move — play music, plan a fundinner for after all the work isdone and don’t let frustration getto you.

Enjoy the ride.• Go green. You might be able to save on

costs and be kinder to theenvironment by moving withsomeone from your area.

• Keep the essentials with you. With most belongings packed

away, create a travel bag formoving day to keep importantpaperwork, credit cards, identification, a change of clothes, drinks and snacks close at hand.

OKANOGAN — If you’rethrowing a graduation party, itpays to plan ahead.

Many families plan post-graduation receptions, barbecuesand potlucks for their graduates.

Be prepared for guests to comeand go, since many people areinvited to more than onegraduation party. That also holdsfor the guest of honor, who maywant to visit classmates’ get-togethers.

While parents often foot thebill, they should remember whoseparty it is and be sure to ask thegraduate what type of party — ifany — is desired.

A parent may want to throw aparty, but the grad may prefer aquiet dinner with his or herimmediate family.

Some graduates don’t want tobe bothered with decisions anddetails, while others want to planthe whole affair themselves.

Some tips:• Set a time and date. It could

be immediately before or after theceremony, but another daycertainly is appropriate.

• Decide on a format andbudget.

The party could be basic, withcake and punch only, or couldinclude a buffet, potluck, barbecueor catered meal. Your format andbudget will be closely related.

• Draw up a guest list and sendinvitations.

• Come up with a venue. Areyou having the party in your homeor yard, at a rented hall or church,a restaurant, park or otherlocation?

Be sure to make reservations. If you're planning an outdoor

party, be sure to have a backuplocation in case of rain.

• Decide on decorations. Ifyou'll need paper products(napkins, plates, etc.) in schoolcolors, be sure to purchase themearly or special order them sincelocal stores' supplies sell outquickly.

Special items, such as favors, tablecloths, balloons, mascotdecorations, etc., should bepurchased early.

Many people go for high schoolcolors or decorations, but somepick a theme related to thegraduate's college selection, planned career or militaryenlistment.

• Try to think of everycontingency.

Make sure you have enoughcharcoal, tape, extra pens, paperplates, a first aid kit, back-up bags

of chips, beverages, ice, toiletpaper and paper towels, carpet

spot cleaner, condiments, etc. Savereceipts since some unopenedsupplies can be returned if youdon't use them.

• Plan where and how you'llserve food.

Borrow tables and chairs, ifnecessary. Coolers, large tubs andclean wheelbarrows can be filledwith ice for cooling beverages. Ifyou don't want to use paper, colorful flat sheets or yard goodsmake inexpensive tablecloths.

• Mow the lawn and weed thegarden, if the party is outside.Change the bulb in the porch light.

• Get some help. The graduate'sfamily should be able to enjoytheir own party.
