Would all users please use the car parking spaces before resorting to roadside parking. There are 21 spaces next to the hall, another 36 behind the tennis courts adjacent to the Wansdyke Room and a further 30 beyond the tennis court opposite Wick House Close - a total of 87. The request is to organisers of and participants in shows and similar events where large numbers of people come to the hall as well as to their patrons. Eric was also a regular contributor to the Society's musical programmes. He also served for several years on the Management and Finance Committee of the Saltford Community Association. He was a very friendly man and will be missed by his friends in Saltford and Keynsham. We express our deepest sympathy to his widow, Barbara.
Ray Moore We are sorry to learn that Ray Moore will shortly be leaving Saltford.
When Gordon Reed was our Chairman, he saw potential.
it was that. in 1 Ray was for the post of the
Hon. Secretary, a post he held until 1979. was meticulous in all he did, frequently offering shrewd comments during discussions which often put matters in perspective.
Following his time as secretary, Ray joined our Building Committee and became almost indispensable through his knowledge of all things electrical His expertise in this field has proved invaluable to us over the years. No request for help was ever too much trouble. Apart from his DIY activities, Ray was supportive of many other despite two tragedies in his personal life.

Saltford Stars Junior !=ootball Club Did you know that over 100 children regularly train and play football for Saltford on the pitches behind Saltford Hall each weekend?
The club, which was founded in 1994, has teams that range from sixyear-olds to fourteen-year-olds. Each weekend these children join together with their volunteer coaches to enjoy learning new skills and to play football. The older age groups play in leagues across Bristol while the younger age children play friendly matches against other local teams.

GOOD NEWS FROM GIRLGUIDING SALTFORDI!!!!!!
Since my appeal in July, we have had THREE new Guiders join us - 1 to run our Monday Guide unit and 2 to run Rainbows. This is wonderful news as both units faced closure.
We are still looking for help for our Friday guide unit, and urgently need a Treasurer for our District team. This is a vital role that the Guiders do not have time to do. It has the advantage that it does not require a weekly commitment & can mostly be done from the comfort of your own home!!! If you are interested or want to know more, please phone me.
Our girls are as busy as ever. 15 Brownies enjoyed a Pack Holiday back in July and 8 Saltford Guides recently joined with some Keynsham Guides for a weekend at the 3D Activity Centre at Osmington Bay, Nr Weymouth. They enjoyed quad biking, archery, climbing, abseiling, fencing and a descent down a 'zip wire'!!! Girls across all 3 sections also enjoy a wide variety of activities in their weekly meetings, and are now busy preparing for Christmas.
So, if you would be interested in joining us - even if you can't commit every week Uob sharing would be fine l !) - please give me a ring to find out what is involved.
Finally, I would like to thank all those who are already part of our team. Your support is greatly valued.

SAL TFORD PARISH COUNCIL
The Parish Council has been working in close liaison with B&NES the above.
The situation to date is that B&NES have requested that Article 4 Direction is revoked that Network Rail will lose their which will then require them to seek planning permission for the erection of these masts}. Network Rai! has stated that they will reduce the height of the Saltford Mast from their original proposal of 30 metres to be no more than 15 metres or even less.
Printed on the opposite page is a reproduction of the latest letter we have sent to the Minister of State. This outlines our concerns this matter in which you will see that we also that an alternative method of communication between train driver and signal control is Inv,estlgated
We hope that the action taken so far will allay possible fears of residents of Saltford and that we will continue to closely monitor this situation.
We now need you to convey to our local Member of Parliament the extent of your concerns and would request that you indicate these in writing to the Parish Clerk at 489, Bath Rd, Saltford.
A copy of the original letter to the Minister of State can be found on the Parish Council notice boards outside the Post Office and inside Saltford Hall

Rt Hon Keith Hill MP, Minister of Slate. Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, 26 Vllhitehall. london. SW1A2WH.
Dear MrHiII,
I am wnting on behalf of Saltford Pansh Council about the request from Bath and North East Somerset Council for a statutory direction Article 4 Direction) to make Network Rail's proposals for mobile telephone masts in area subject to planning control. Their letter dated 27t! October 2004 refers.
This Parish Council's particular concern is the proposal to one of these masts on a prominent site at the entrance to the village and adjacent to the Saltford Conservation Area. The Council has written to Networi< Rail and to Bath and North East Somerset Council, objecting strongly to the location of this mast. It would have a detrimental effect on the Visual arnenity of this part of Saltford and would be close to residential properties, some of which are already being blighted by the proposal.
In the absence of the Article 4 Direction for which Bath and North East Somerset Council has applied. Network Rail will retain permitted development rights. The Parish Council is strongly of the view that in this case the decision should be made by the local planning authority, so that the rlanning issues can be property and fully considered, in the local context
The main london to Bristol railway line runs through this village (mainly in a cutting and a short runnel) and our experience of other work carried out by Network Rail in the area the Parish Council no confidence whatsoever that local concerns, or the effect this proposal on the local environment, will figure in the decision of this Company. It is and always has been. fully appreciated that railway must come first, but the Council understands that equally effective alternatives to these intrusive and insensitive proposals are possible and these should be independently explored by and with the responsible planning authority.
There is considerable strength of feeling locally on this issue, which this Parish Council fully shares and the Counclf urges you to use your power to bring these proposals of Network Rail within the democratically controlled planning
I am this letter to Dan Noms, our Member of Partiament and to our Ward Councillors on Bath and North East Somerset Council
Peter H Godfrey, Clerk

Saltford Evening W.I. In October. at the AGM of the president. Olive Woolcott, said it had been a successful year, with interesting and outside events covering walks, skittles, visits to a craft exhibition and Bath Magistrates Court. A successful Wine and Cheese Party had raised £ 194 for Hinton Close Care Centre. We had helped the Community Association with cleaning the chairs in August and 70 blankets had been made for Keynsham Hospital. 5 new members were enrolled during the year and at the AGM a further 4 were enrolled. Joan Butler reSigned as Treasurer after 5 years and was thanked for all her hard work over the years. A full committee was formed with Sylvia Dando as Secretary. Olive Wolicott as President and Val Thomas as Treasurer.
On show was the plaque we share with Portbury WI for the best programme and the year 2005 looks good with varied activities and speakers. At the November meeting, the Sales Table looked so very festive and colourful and did a good trade. The speaker, Ms Geraldine Marchand gave a talk on the "History of the HandkerchieF and Betty Underwood brought a very precious memento of the 1914-1918 war, a handkerchief embroidered "Go my darling

14 December Christmas Meeting with mince and exchange of 18 January 'Down the Shannon and up the Dart' - Mrs S Marshfield
New members and visitors are always welcome.
Keynsham Orchestra In the last issue of SCAN, we reported that we would be giving a concert on 20 November. We regret that it was later decided to postpone it until the New Year and it is now scheduled for 12 February 2005 in Saltford Hall.
The orchestra wishes to apologise for any disappointments or inconveniences resulting from this alteration.
Saltford Townswomen's Guild. In September, the Guild met to hear Mr John Seymour talk about the Lions Club of Keynsham. In a very and enlightening talk, he told of the work of the Club in Keynsham which is part of a world-wide organisation. Not only do Keynsham Lions support local charities and individuals, but the Club is very involved with the financing and running of eye camps in India.
In October, many concerning the organisation of the Guild were discussed including the fact that the coffee morning held at the home of Mrs Barbara Lees was not only a good social occasion but also raised a
17
amount of money for the charity which the Guild is supporting this year. Barbara Gilmour then spoke about "Rationed Fashion". This illustrated account of fashion during the war years was infonmative, and, at times, amusing. It brought back memories and evoked many interesting comments from members.
Rotary Club of Keynsham Chew Valley. The dub is now in its busy time of the year. During October, we held a street collection in Keynsham to help us buy a 'Shelter Box" for use when disaster strikes somewhere in the world leaving people homeless. Despite atrocious weather, we collected £218. Thanks to all who supported us.
10 December. With Keynsham Rotary Club, the club is presenting CHRISTMAS MUSICAL MAGIC CONCERT featuring TIMSBURY MALE VOICE CHOIR. The concert is at SI John's Church Keynsham, starting at 8.00 pm and the proceeds will go to 'The Babe Appeal' for a new Children's Hospice and other Rotary Charities. Tickets are £5, available from the Stroud & Swindon Building Society in Keynsham and St John's Church Parish Office or from any member of the Rotary Clubs. Why not come and have an enjoyable

ten classes of wine. Our for the evening were Carol Coombs, Peter Coombs and Vernon Groves who all did a magnificent job, for which we are extremely grateful. The overall winner with most points in the show was Percy Mellor. While the judging was taking place, Derek Arrnit~lnA treated us to a tasting of French wines and reminisced on his holiday in the Gironde Valley.
At the end of October we joined with our friends from the Warmley Wine Circle to spend a weekend in Torquay. In spite of the poor weather we all had a most time. A group of our members also attended the Bath Wine Circle's Halloween Dance in aid of local charities. We sipped the local "Witches and had a tasty fish and chip supper while dancing the night away.
