Facebook and Twitter The district has both a Facebook and Twitter account. Please follow the district to keep up to date with district information. PTA Our PTA does wonderful things for our school. We have a very active group and would love to get as many members as possible in order to continue to support our students and staff.

Pick-up and Drop-off As many have already discovered, parking at Saltar’s Point is very limited. If you are picking up your student after school, please park on the shoulder of 3rd street. A staff member will direct three vehicles at a time in to the pick-up zone. This really helps with the congestion and has proven to be a very speedy process. Just a reminder that students may not arrive to school before 8:10 unless they are participating in a music group. i-Ready Our district is using the i-Ready program as a diagnostic and practice tool. It is recommended that our students spend at least 45 minutes a week on both the math and language arts components. Students may access this program from home by clicking HERE.

When Is Your Child Too Sick for School?Daily attendance is one of the most powerful predictors of school success and on-time graduation. The Department of Education says children who are absent less than nine school days generally performbetter in school. When you are making a decision about when a child is too sick to go to school or not, use these guidelines to help:

Z Z Z

Send your child to school if... Keep your child home if... Call the doctor if...They have a runny nose or just a little cough, but no

other symptoms.

They haven’t taken any fever reducing medicine for 24 hours,

and haven’t had a fever during that time.

They don’t feel great, but have no other significant symptoms. They didn’t sleep well, and are

kind of tired.

They haven’t thrown up or had any diarrhea for 24 hours.

They feel sick and have had a temperature of greater than 100.4°F in the past 24 hours.

They throw up two or more times in 24 hours.

They have diarrhea—three or more watery stools in 24 hours.

Their eyes are pink and crusty.

They have a chronic cough and/or green nasal discharge.

They have a temperature greater than 100.4°F for more

than two days.

They throw up or have diarrhea for more than two days.

They’ve had the snies for morethan a week, and they aren't

getting better.

They still have asthma symptoms after using asthma medicine

(and call 911 if I’m have trouble breathing after using an inhaler).

Dear Parent and/or Guardian:

If your child requires cough drops at school, please note the following:

Many cough drops contain medication and/or herbs. Ex. Lidocaine, Menthol,

Echinacea. By law we cannot dispense any medication type items without MD

orders, parent request, and item in original packaging. Cough drops that do not

contain these things are not any better than a hard candy.

You are welcome to send to school some hard candy (like Life Savers) to be kept in

the health room, for use while your child is not feeling well.

Attached is the current MEDICATION POLICY for Steilacoom School District and the

required PHYSICIAN’S ORDERS FOR MEDICATION AT SCHOOL form. The form needs

to be signed and dated by the health care provider and the parent/guardian.

If you have any questions regarding the cough drop policy, please feel free to

contact me.

Sincerely,

Brianne Giovannini LPN

Dear Families, September 2018

Your child would like to play this year in the Saltar’s Point Marimba Band. This is a wonderful opportunity

for them to enhance their musical experience. The members of Marimba Band learn much over the year

about playing and being part of a community. In addition they have the opportunity to perform several

times during the year.

Participation in marimba band will involve a number of things including concert attendance. The purpose

of this letter is to inform you as parents of the dates of our performances and the requirements for

joining Saltar’s Point marimba band.

We will have multiple performance opportunities this year. The dates are as follows:

Friday December 14th 6:30 pm

Friday June 7th 6:30 pm

There may be added dates and I promise to give plenty of notice.

*** (Please take into consideration organized sports activities such as basketball, soccer and baseball when making a decision about this group. If sporting events take priority in your household, that may affect whether or not you choose to have your child participate. Games and or practices are not acceptable reasons for missing concert performances. That is our season so to speak. The only excused absences from the above dates will be family emergencies and illnesses.)

IMPORTANT! Marimba will take place before the school day on Tuesday (4th grade) and

Thursday/Friday (two 5th grade groups) mornings starting at 7:30 a.m. and ending at 8:15 a.m. Because of

this early morning start time, transportation could be an issue. Parents will need to transport students

to school or arrange for them to get a ride. I realize this may pose a problem for some families and I am

willing to work on solutions if students do not have transportation.

*Siblings who are not involved in marimba band will need to come to school at the normal time and may

not be dropped off with marimba band members. There is no adult supervision for siblings at that time.

The third and final requirement will be to attend rehearsals regularly and on time. Students are

only allowed 1 absence from marimba band a month. (This includes illness.) If you have a child who

misses school frequently due to illness or family matters, or if they have difficulty getting up early in

the morning they may not be good candidates for marimba band. I am fairly strict in regards to

attendance and tardiness issues.

If you feel you would like your child to participate in marimba band this year, and you understand the requirements, please return the attached form to me no later than Friday, September 14th.

Sincerely,

Erin Bathurst

NEW SAFETY PROCEDURES FOR SCHOOL ENTRY

In our school and district’s continued effort to ensure that our schools, staff and students are safe at all

times, effective August 30, 2018, our exterior front doors will be locked at all times. Doors open for

students at 8:10 a.m. During arrival, students will be admitted through the gym doors in the presence of

school staff or designee. The gym doors will be closed at 8:40 a.m. Any student arriving after 8:40 a.m.

will need to be checked in at the office. Please use the main entrance and ring the buzzer for admittance.

If you need to pick up your student during the school day, are volunteering or have a pre-arranged

appointment with a staff member, we ask that you please use the buzzer at the main entrance. Please

have your photo ID ready! We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work to keep our

children and staff safe.

NEW LUNCH SAFETY GUIDELINES

On occasion, our family members wish to have lunch with their student. In order to ensure safety, only

approved volunteers and identified family members listed in Skyward will be able to have lunch in our

multi-purpose room. Any identified family members who are not cleared volunteers will be given a private

space to eat in the office. Please call ahead to arrange this with our main office.

Student Pick-up and Drop-off Procedures

To ensure a safe procedure for picking up students after school, we ask the following of each driver:

Please enter the front parking lot from Third Street only and enter the driveway, not

overflowing past the stop sign or in the middle of the street. Cars should not pass on the left of

cars waiting. Please wait patiently as the staff member motions for you to pull into the parking

lot.

The children waiting for pick up in the designated waiting area near the front door will be

motioned by a staff member to fill the closest 3 cars to the front door first. Once those cars pull

away, the next 3 cars will move forward to be filled. Children should not be called to run across

the parking lot as this creates a dangerous situation.

The pickup process usually takes less than 10 minutes and runs smoothly. If for some reason a

new person is arriving to pick up and is unaware of the procedure, we appreciate your patience

and will advise the driver of the process.

To apply go to: sodexo.balancetrak.com and search for “Steilacoom”
