ABOUT  SALT

In  Australia  the  figures  for  tradeswomen  are  very  small  with  just  over  5000  tradeswomen    across  the  whole  of  Australia.  Supporting  And  Linking  Tradeswomen  (SALT)  is  a  non-‐profit    incorporated  organisation,  which  began  in  2009  to  provide  a  support  network  for  tradeswomen,  apprentices  and  women  who  wish  to  enter  the  trades.  The  aims  of  SALT  are:

• Providing  support  to  tradeswomen  in  Australia  including  apprentices  and  women  seeking  to  work  in  the  trades

• Providing  avenues  for  women  to  meet  other  tradeswomen,  apprentices  etc  and  share  experiences

• Promoting  women  in  the  trades  to  the  general  public  and  industry

• Advocating  for  change  to  attitudes  to  women  working  in  the  trades

• Campaigning  for  changes  which  enable  women  to  train  and  work  in  trades

• Promoting  diversity  and  acceptance  for  all  people  in  the  trades,  SALT  has  always  encouraged  men  to  join  us  as  we  believe  the  way  forward  is  men  and  women  working  together

Since  we  began  we  have  run  86  Workshops  across  NSW,  ACT  and  Victoria  teaching  women  how  to  use  tools  using  our  mobile  workshop.  We  have  partnered  with  multiple  organisations  and  taken  teams  of  tradeswomen  and  men  who  voluntarily  worked  to  help  farmers  dealing  with  drought  in  Lightning  Ridge  four  times  in  less  than  a  year.  We  have  given  talks  in  about  50  schools  regarding  making  positive  career  choices  which  will  enable  women  to  earn  reasonable  wages  to  support  themselves  and  their  families.  We  have  also  worked  Government  departments  such  as  Department  of  Education,  Women  NSW  and  Office  for  Women,  Victoria  and  major  construction  companies  and  peak  bodies  such  as  NECA,  Master  Painters  and  Master  Electricians  regarding  policies  and  initiatives  to  employ  women  in  trades.

ABOUT  THE  TRADESWOMEN  AUSTRALIA  CONFERENCE

The  inaugural  Tradeswomen  Australia  Conference  theme  is:

“Jobs  don’t  have  a  gender,  your  country  needs  you”

The  social  misconception  that  jobs  have  genders  and  that  work  is  divided  into  men  and  women’s  jobs  does  not  allow  the  Australian  Workforce  to  meet  its  full  potential  and  hugely  diminishes  what  it  is  possible  in  terms  of  overall  production  and  GDP.  It  is  also  unrecognised  that  women  have  worked  in  all  areas  of  industry  and  the  contribution  that  women  have  made  throughout  Australian  history  is  seldom  acknowledged.  The  conference  will  unequivocally  establish  a  foundation  of  knowledge  and  recognition  of  what  has  gone  before  and  look  to  the  future  regarding  what  can  be  done  to  establish  gender  diversity  and  move  to  ensure  that  ‘trade  capability’  is  what  the  discussion  evolves  around  and  not  gender.

WHO  WILL  ATTEND?

The  Tradeswomen  Australia  Conference  will  attract  tradeswomen,  apprentices,  tradeswomen’s  representatives  and  groups,  policy  makers,  Industry  leaders,  Industry  groups,  trade  suppliers  and  a  wide  range  of  people  who  are  interested  in  supporting  a  forward  thinking  and  innovative  work  culture  that  produces  increased  output  and  results.

The  venue  can  hold  450  delegates  comfortably  and  provides  scope  for  multiple  activities

THE  VENUE

Wollongong  Town  Hall  is  the  city’s  key  civic  and  community  venue  and  is  located  within  Wollongong’s  Arts  Precinct.  It  was  extensively  refurbished  in  2011  and  provides  an  outstanding  venue  with  the  main  auditorium  boasting  cathedral  ceilings,  wooden  floors,  renowned  acoustics,  the  ‘royal  box’  and  historically  significant  Ronald  Sharp  pipe  Organ.

Ron  Sharp  was  a  self  taught  organ  builder  who  introduced  mechanical  action  to  Australia.  His  tracker  action  baroque  organs  are  particularly  famous.  The  town  hall  Organ  is  considered  a  notable  organ  along  with  his  Sydney  Opera  House  Grand  Organ,  Knox  Grammar  School  Chapel  Organ  and  Perth  Concert  Hall  Organ.  This  will  be  the  main  conference  area  for  keynote  speakers  and  plenary.

The  Music  Lounge  plus  additional  areas  will  host  a  major  exhibition  of  women  working  in  Industry  during  the  World  Wars,  and  feature  significant  local  and  national  history  regarding  the  40,000  plus  women  who  worked  in  munitions,  aircraft  and  shipbuilding.  The  Ocean  and  Wattle  Room  will  form  part  of  the  break  out  activities  with  other  function  spaces  within  the  complex.

WHAT  ARE  THE  BENEFITS  OF  BECOMING  A  SPONSOR  FOR  THE  CONFERENCE?

Sponsorship  of  the  Tradeswomen  Australia  Conference  will  provide  you  with  the  opportunity  to:

• Make  connections  with  a  range  of  key  tradeswomen  and  people  working  in  gender  diversity    • Increase  the  awareness  of  the  products  and  services  that  you  have  to  offer  • Showcase  the  ways  in  which  your  services  and  products  are  relevant  to  existing  and  potential  customers  • Network  with  key  people  in  the  tradeswomen  sector  to  understand  the  latest  trends,  issues  and  emerging

challenges
