ABOUT SALMESTONE GRANGE

Salmestone Grange is one of the best preserved and most interesting examples of monastic granges in Europe. It is one of the areas oldest inhabited buildings. Between 1290 and 1400 it served as a rural 'retreat' for the abbot and monks of St Augustine's Abbey at Canterbury.Salmestone Grange has its own private chapel in the grounds and is now used for private functions.

ABOUT THE MODEL

The Salmestone Grange model was made by John Woodward and Daniel Cole in 1973, for a Townswoman’s Guild display, to celebrate ‘Architectural Heritage’ year. It was on display in Margate Museum for many years but, following the museum’s recent closure, it was transferred to the Crampton Tower Museum in Broadstairs.
