Welcome Students Director’s message Winter/Spring 2019
Greetings and best wishes for a successful winter/spring term. The Salinas Adult School is truly a place for gaining success in life and on the job.
The Salinas Adult School has been serving the Salinas Valley community and surrounding areas for 100 years. This is very inspiring to me and speaks to the value and needs of adult education in our community.
There are some exciting new changes and additions to our course offerings in the New Year and additional support services for our community.
We are bringing back the Career Center to accelerate transition of our students to a higher level of education or into the workforce.
Salinas Adult School’s Pearson Vue approved testing center offers a plethora of testing opportunities that lead to certification in a variety of professional fields: real estate, insurance, cosmetology, etc.
As always, we work with those needing to complete their high school diploma, study ESL and pass the GED/HiSET.
In the spring we will be offering an Integrated Culinary class where students will learn food preparation as well as English Language skills. At the end of the course, the learners will get ServSafe certification and will be informed of Career Pathways options.
Our Parent Education program covers parenting from 0-5 age children. Childbirth classes are taught in English and Spanish. We also offer parent and child activity classes,
as well as an NAEYC accredited preschool program.
Our Student Council convenes on a quarterly basis with the purpose of giving feedback on our services and suggesting school improvements. The engagement of the students and their support of school advancement at these meetings are extraordinary.
The community needs are of the highest priority to our staff. We are here to help you achieve your goals with an emphasis on providing quality education and career training that leads to high-wage and sustainable employment.
Whether you are a student or someone who needs to find resources available in the community, please call or come in to meet with our knowledgeable staff. Thank you for allowing us to serve you.

Student TestimonialsHear what Salinas Adult School students have to say about our great campus!
My name is Abraham Ledesma. I believe my experience at the Salinas Adult School profoundly changed my life. I dropped out of high school at 16. When my 18th birthday came around, I found myself sitting in a chair not knowing where I would be in 10 years. I began working dead-end jobs to make ends meet.
By age 20 I had decided if I want to have a better life, I needed a better education.
I was intimidated to go back to school. Between life circumstances and being belittled by my previous teachers, it left me with a mindset that all modern teaching methods and educators are all the same. Despite my intimidation, I brought myself to the Salinas Adult School and signed myself up. After that day, my life had a profound change. I met one of the most influential and inspirational teachers I have ever met.
The teachers at the Salinas Adult School understand life happens. Circumstances and inconveniences arise that are unplanned and poorly timed. The staff and teachers at the Salinas Adult School gave me the courage and knowledge I needed to succeed.
Going into the program, I didn’t see myself with a career or being a home owner. Earning my GED gave me the confidence to tackle jobs and tasks that I thought before were impossible. With the support and encouragement from Salinas Adult School staff, I was able to find a career. I am currently saving for a house.
Here’s what I would say to someone who is thinking about coming back and finishing their GED/ high school diploma: Go for it! It will change your outlook on life. It helped me find the path I wanted to take in this life.

The Parent Center has been the best thing for my entire family. Not only has my Patty blossomed into this precious little girl, she has learned so much.
I’ve learned how to be the best parent I can be, being able to co-op in the classroom is my favorite part. Watching not only my daughter, but all the kids discover, learn, grow, and become friends is amazing.
All the teachers are fantastic. Not only have I been able to watch my daughter blossom I’ve been able to accomplish my own goals by working toward earning my diploma at the Salinas Adult School. The fact that they are so close together has been incredibly helpful to my family.
Both programs are amazing and I’m so lucky to be able to receive the help and guidance from the teachers, staff, and security. They all do such a wonderful job.

Student CouncilThe Student Council is an important part of our school. Representatives from morning and evening classes meet with the administration and staff several times a year to learn more about the school and voice their ideas.
Last year the students were instrumental in organizing the 100th anniversary celebration of the school, providing beautiful decorations and delicious refreshments.
Students learn about new classes and the other opportunities to advance their education. They offer suggestions about the types of classes they would like to take and changes that they would like to see.
Students are very involved in the outreach of the school, telling the community how the programs at the Salinas Adult School are helping them learn English, earn their high school diplomas and reach their goals.

Community PartnershipsThe strong connection with the community has enabled students to succeed and explore their career interests. In addition to the main campus, SAS traditionally has held classes at Alisal Family Resource Center, Saint Mary’s Church, Alisal High School and Memorial Hospital to provide learning opportunities for adults throughout the community.
SAS has a Community Advisory Council that provides input about local employment opportunities and potential job training. The Council meets annually to advise on the needs of the community. The members of this council include Hartnell Community College, Mission Trails Regional Occupational Program, Workforce Development Board, Out of School Youth/Migrant Education, Monterey County Office of Education, Center for Employment Training, Monterey County Jail, Monterey County Business Council, Salinas Public Library, Salinas Valley Adult Education Consortium (SVAEC) and SAS staff.
SAS has been an active member of the SVAEC since its inception, serving an instrumental role in the development of the regional plan. SAS has collaborated with other adult schools and community partners in the region to improve the services for adult learners.
