Nearly 53 percent of the Indias total energy

    requirements are met from coal.

The available coal reserves in India are sufficient to

meet our needs for at least another 100 years.

India now ranks 3rd amongst the coal producing

countries in the world. Short tons of coal consumed in a country per year

Indian coal is of poor quality with high ash content (35-50%)

and low calorific value (gross heat of combustion).

For eg., The calorific value of Ohio coal is almost twice that

4620MW in Mundra, Gujarat by ADANI Power will be

the largest coal based thermal power plant in India,

followed by 4000MW in same location by TATA Power.

NTPC's Talcher power plant has recently commissionedits 5th unit of 500 MW which enhances the total power to

    2500MW.

Currently work is going on at Chandrapur super thermal

power plant , Maharashtra for 2x 500 MW units (Unit 8and 9). Current capacity is 2340 MW and will be

enhanced to 3340 MW in near future.

India had 38 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of proven natural

gas reserves as of January 2007.

At this production level, India's reserves are likely tolast for around 29 years; that is significantly longer than

the 19 years estimated for oil reserves.

Almost 70% of Indias natural gas reserves are found in

the Bombay High basin and in Gujarat. Current Energy production is 17,374.85 MW (10.5%).

    First Nuclear power plant ever??

Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant (1954) in Russia is

the world's first nuclear power plant and it producedaround 5 megawatts of electric power.

First Nuclear power plant in India?

At Tarapur in Maharashtra state. Two BWR reactors

rated at 150 MW each. Operational in 1969. Currently in India, seventeen nuclear power reactors

produce 4,560 MW (2.81% of total installed base).

6 other are under construction and are expected to

    generate an additional 2,720 MW.

The Earth receives 174 petawatts (PW) of incoming

solar radiation in which approximately 30% is

reflected back to space while the rest is absorbed by

clouds, oceans and land masses. Why???

Recently, Scientists from Spectrolab, a subsidiary of

Boeing, have published their research on the

fabrication of solar cells that surpass the 40%

    efficiency milestone-the highest efficiency

    achieved for any photovoltaic device.

The amount of solar energy produced in India is merely 0.4%

    compared to other energy resources.

The Grid-interactive solar power as of June 2007 was merely2.12 MW.

    Applications:

    1. Solar street lighting systems,

    2. Home lighting systems,3. Solar lanterns,

    4. Solar photovoltaic power plants,

    5. Solar water heating systems,

    6. Box-type solar cookers,7. Solar photovoltaic pumps.

Solar water heaters: Bangalore has the largest deployment

of rooftop solar water heaters in India that will generate

energy equivalent to 200 MW everyday.

Gujarat government has signed a MoU with Clinton

Foundation to build the worlds largest solar-power

plant with a capacity of 3,000MW near the India-

Pakistan border. Moser Baer India is developing a 1 MW solar power

project in Chandrapur district. When completed, it will

be one of the largest solar projects in the world using the

latest thin film technology. In the latest budget for 2010-11, the government has

announced an allocation of 10 billion Rs. towards the

    Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission.
