The Daily News of TV Sales Wednesday, October 18, 2017 NIELSEN STARTS SVOD MEASURING SERVICE VIEWERSHIP INFO WILL BE RELEASED WEEKLY Nielsen is finally launching its subscription-based video- on-demand measuring service, according to MediaPost. Eight major TV networks and production studios have signed on to the syndicated service, including A+E Networks, Disney-ABC Television, NBCUniversal, Lionsgate and Warner Bros., but Nielsen will focus on Netflix only for now. Netflix, the biggest U.S. subscription on demand service, has 53 million subs. Brian Fuhrer, SVP of product leadership for Nielsen, said while the service will focus just on Netflix initially, “we are talking about expanding this to Amazon and Hulu in 2018.” Fuhrer says SVOD viewership data from the service will be released on a weekly basis, similar to Nielsen’s release of its VOD content ratings. For the new SVOD measuring service, Nielsen is using an independent technology creating an audio signature it can install on TV programs. “It’s a big break-through,” says Fuhrer, in the MediaPost story. Viewership data of SVOD-delivered programming can now be analyzed versus other national TV programming -- day- by-day or other time frames. For example, it can measure the viewership of Netflix show “Fuller House” versus other national TV network programs. Nielsen’s new service utilizes its national TV panel -- 44,000 homes and over 100,000 people. “That is how you can see all that granularity [of data],” he adds. It includes ratings, demographics, impressions, frequency and segmentation. FOX IS LETTING PEOPLE WATCH FEWER ADS People are doing whatever they can to avoid TV ads. Fox wants to help them. The broadcaster has teamed up with the video tech company Innovid to bring new interactive ads to people’s TV screens designed to engage viewers and satisfy their desire to watch fewer ads. Viewers will be able to chose to watch a specific longer ad from a brand like Trident or Clorox, and, in return, they’ll be able to stream a show like FX’s Atlanta with limited commercial interruptions. These new interactive “Engagement Ads” – have already debuted on FX’s connected TV app (FX Now) via Roku devices, and Fox is planning to roll it out on multiple network’s digital platforms. These ads are available only when people stream content on demand, and not during live TV. This type of “watch an ad for longer content sessions” offering has become more common on digital outlets like Hulu and Spotify. But TrueX’s challenge has long been getting enough scale to make interactive ads compelling enough for ad buyers. Both The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on NBC and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS are in repeats this week. Kimmel has told Variety that he expects to return to the ABC Upfront presentation in 2018. The host has been part of the festivities for ABC since 2002, skipping the last upfront to take care of his newborn son. Kimmel inevitably lets loose with a torrent of stick-it-to-the-man jokes about the relationship between advertisers and TV. He told the audience in 2009, “Every year we lie to you, and every year you come back for more.” ……Verizon pulled Univision programming from its Fios lineup of TV channels on Monday afternoon. The move was done “entirely without warning” according to a statement from the Hispanic-language network. Fios, which stands for Fiber Optic Service, can include Verizon broadband and phone service. The real battle takes place off the track as two drivers fall in love. Turner will executive produce the project along with Jennifer Klein.... While it’s not broadcast network news, Monday Night Football (Colts/Titans) on ESPN hit a season low 6.1 rating in metered markets. That’s a 13 percent dip from the week before (Chicago/Minnesota). FiOS DROPS UNIVISION In the latest major retransmission consent battle, Verizon’s FiOS service has dropped Univision, leaving about 5 million homes without the network, primarily on the East Coast. As is typical each side blames the other. A Univision spokesperson told Dow Jones Newswire, “We urge Verizon to put Univision back on and come back to the negotiating table and prove its commitment to the Hispanic community.” A FiOS spokesperson said Univision is asking for more than double what they charge today and “we believe the appeal for Univision programming is waning given their reported declining viewership.”

BUSINESS BYTES The Beverage Information Group’s 2017 Beer Handbook says that while certain segments of the beer category showed some strong gains last year, overall category consumption dropped by 0.3% to 2.83 billion 2.25-gallon cases. Imports were strong, growing 6.7% and pushing their market share to 16%. Craft beers also were up, growing 6.0%, and surpassing the 10 market share milestone for the first time to reach a 10.4 share, up from 9.8 a year ago. Flavored Malt Beverages such as Lime-A-Rita were up by 2.4%. It’s the traditional beer sold by the large breweries that is having the toughest time. Noting “there’s a general malaise towards (Super and Premium beer) for not being craft beer,” the Super/Premium sector lost over 13 million cases last year, and fell to a 13.6 share. Light beer is also under fire - but is still the largest segment in the industry with a 44.5 share. Of the brands in the segment, only Michelob Ultra showed growth. And the “Popular” segment continued its steady decline, down to just 6.5% of the market. As the numbers of millennials of drinking age continues to grow, their influence on beer consumption also increases. The Handbook sees upside for the craft segment from that generation with a growing number of regional and micro-breweries reaching over 5,200 last year. It notes with so many new offerings hitting the marketplace, millennials are likely to still find crafts appealing.
