Christmas – Joy or Bah Humbug?
Christmas has been cancelled! I told Santa you had been good all year. He died laughing! Are there times when you wish it was cancelled? Are you fed up with the pressure of Christmas and want to rediscover the joys of the past?
It’s the season of Joy, Peace and Goodwill to all, the most wonderful time of the year or so we believe it should be. In actuali-ty for many it’s a depressing time of Pressure, Greed and Debt.
Many believe Christmas is for Children. For them it can be a magical time with Father Christmas bringing all that their hearts desire. Adults on the other hand trying to get this “magic” into the season can find it isn’t a joy but a nightmare of expense and pressure. The tragedy is we have turned God’s season of giving into our getting.
Is there a way to catch again the Joy, the Peace and the Goodwill that this season should hold? I believe there is a way as we remember that the heart of Christmas is not about what we can get but about God’s giving of a child born to change the world.
Across the benefice, in Church and Chapel. we invite you to discover afresh the joy of this season. We offer you a taste of the values of the past that still hold true for today. We invite you to Carol services by candlelight, that tell of God’s great gift, and Celebration services that involve children and have festive refreshments for all.
Christmas is not just for children, it is for all, and we invite you to come and discover that you still can have Joy and Peace and that there is Goodwill for all. These are the gifts the Christ child gives.
Christ’s love that accepts us as we are, but loves us too much to let us stay that way, gives us a Joy that brings with it a Peace that holds us in the storms of life and Goodwill to all. These gifts are worth searching for. As you seek them may God bless you with them this Christmas and in the New Year.
Rev Tim

12 December: Wick Pre-school Christmas shopping evening 8th December: Wick School FOWS Christmas Fair 16th/17th December: Wick Chapel Christmas Concert 30th June, 2018: Wick School FOWS Summer Fair
Sadly, the decision was taken NOT to do the community carol singing this year. We did it for 3 years, and the hope was that it would expand and include more and more of the village each year. Unfortunately, last year saw a distinct shrinkage - in both the number of people who joined in, and the number of people who came to their doors or windows to listen. Our grateful thanks to Natasha at the hairdressers for making us so welcome and “refreshed” each year. If people want to do it again next year, drop a line to The Editor ([email protected])

It’s hard to think this is the last magazine of the year, where does the time go?
The church Patronal Festival was held on 5th November and was very well attended and after the service we all enjoyed a delicious celebration cake, thanks to Jeanette. The Remembrance Sunday Service was also well attended and it was good to welcome members of the uniformed groups with their leaders. A peace prayer chain made by the young people during the service was a stunning visual aid and added to the spirit of remembrance.
The PCC met in November and members were delighted to hear that the Parish Council had invited bids for funds for village projects and it was agreed to submit a request to help finance the redecoration of the chancel area of church.
Talking of projects, we are grateful to everyone who helped clear the ditch on the churchyard boundary with the School field. It really was a team effort. Thanks in particular to Alan and his “best man” who worked hard on the Friday (in the dry) and made great job of clearing the area, and then the team of volunteers who continued the next day when un-fortunately it rained, and rained, and rained! Despite the weather everyone worked well and did a splendid job. Thank you all very much
Following the Christmas Tree Festival last year, this time we are having a Christmas Carol Display in Church on Saturday 9th December with many of the village groups involved. Each group will be providing a display depicting a Christmas Carol and there will be light refreshments available during the day. We are grateful to Tina for organising the event this time and we do encourage you to call in to see the displays and to also enjoy lunch or just a cup of tea and a chat.
Details of all Christmas Services are included in the magazine and you are warmly invited to join in the celebrations of the birth of Our Lord. The Crib Service is always a special time and thoroughly recommended for everyone, especially little people. Do come along, you will be most wel-come. Tea towels and tinsel haloes are optional...
As we are coming to the end of the year may I say a special thank you to everyone at St Bartholomew’s for all they do to maintain the family life of the Church.
With all good wishes for a very Happy Christmas and a blessed and peaceful New Year.

• to promote pride in the local area as a safe, thriving and pleasant place to live, work and play
• to reduce crime, disorder and drug and alcohol misuse in the area
• to empower local people to have a greater voice and influ-ence over local decision making and service delivery by in-creasing the strength, capacity and engagement of the local community
• to improve the quality of life of people in the local area by identifying community aspirations, needs and local priorities.

Come and see the decorations in the
porch - each year, we put up greenery
and fairy lights, and decorate with
angels.
What you may not know is that each
angel represents a loved one who is
now in heaven. If you would like to
donate an angel for someone you
have lost this year, bring one with
you when you come to see the
Christmas carol display on Saturday 9th, or any day after that, and
hang your angel from the greenery. If you would like to take it away
again when the decorations come down, that is fine, but if you choose
to leave them with us for subsequent years, they are lovingly and
carefully stored, and will be displayed reverently thereafter.

News from the URC
On Remembrance Sunday we welcomed to our service Liam Hargreaves
and his friend, who is currently serving in the armed forces. Liam placed
the wreath on the War Memorial. It made the service even more poignant
to have people who had experienced recent conflicts. At the end of the
service we shared refreshments in the schoolroom.

Wick Village WI Wendy Haynes writes:
Our meeting on October 26th was our AGM. Wendy Haynes was elected in as President for another year and Anthea Watts stood down as our Secretary. We thanked her for all the hard work she has put in for the last five years and we welcomed Pauline Fudge to the role of Secretary. After the AGM our speaker for this month was Ruth Baker-Walton. She gave a very interesting talk, along with some beautiful slides on her “Brush with Africa”. Ruth fell in love with Africa many years ago and visited many beautiful places and saw many amazing animals. After her talk, our social time was filled with looking at the paintings Ruth had painted on her travels. December’s meeting is our Christmas Event, where Christine Gages’ daughters will be entertaining us with activities - and possibly some singing? Date for January meeting: 25th January 2018. This will be a “members meeting”, with no speaker for this month. February’s meeting is on 22nd 2018 and the speaker will be Philomena telling us about “Chair exercise”. All have a lovely Christmas from Wick Village W I and a Happy New year for 2018
The Wick Owl would like to wish all our
contributors and readers a VERY merry
Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

Wick Guides Invite you to Brighten up a Winter evening and have some fun around the village with a
Window Wanderland on Saturday 24th Feb. Each year throughout Bristol communities pick an evening to decorate their windows with a simple tissue paper design and get out with friends, family and neighbours to view the artwork. See http://www.windowwanderland.com to see some brilliant examples. 2018 is Wick's year to take part. Either decorate your own window or get out and do the trail or both.
More details to follow in next months news and posters in the usual places.

WICK & ABSON PARISH COUNCIL
Wick and Abson Parish Council are continuing to
undertake maintenance and upkeep of the park. The
trees have been cut back in the car park, but it has
been necessary to remove and dispose of 6.5 tonnes of
rubbish/litter/doggy poo bags. This has cost £250. You
can appreciate that this is a time consuming, expensive
(not to mention unpleasant) exercise. Please help to
reduce this unnecessary cost. Thank you.
Wick and Abson Parish Council have funded 2
defibrillators which will be installed shortly at the Village
Hall and Boyd Close community centre. We will be looking to potentially
fund further defibrillators in the coming financial year.
There are an increasing number of anti-social incidents occurring in
Brockwell Park. If you see such an incident please take five minutes of
your time to report it to [email protected] in an
effort to reduce these, so that the park may be used safely by all. Thank
you.

Wick Football Club
Sponsorship Opportunities
Wick Football Club provides a unique opportunity for companies to advertise their services and raise their profile and getting your message across to our audience whilst also supporting the club. This will be a permanent fixture at all times, therefore will be seen by players, families and friends all year round. There is also the possibility of featuring in the background of the local media coverage the club receives. Wick FC are able to offer 6'x2' boards which includes artwork design through to produc-tion. The boards will be seen by players, officials and supporters at the ground, and with local photographers, there is a good chance of your board being in the background of the local newspapers or on social media. If you wish to provide your own board, then Wick FC can accommodate this.
To get your message across effectively, please keep it simple. Bold names with telephone numbers are far more eye-catching rather than too much detail. Costs: £175 for one year. If you are interested please contact Matt Davis on 07977 510352.
