Tips For Proper Chemical Use and Stripping

Safety is IMPORTANT! Work with plenty of ventilation, use a face shield or safety goggles, chemical resistant gloves, arm guards and rubber apron.

Liquid stripper can be applied by flow over or by immersion. Stripping liquid can be pumped with a BSI electric or diaphragm pump system. Apply a liberal coat and allow product to strip all coatings prior to removal. Keep the furniture piece as flat as possible in the tank to keep fumes low and away from operator. Thin coatings and clear finishes will usually strip in 2-30 minutes. For items with multiple coatings, apply repeated liberal coats of stripper until all finishes are removed. Avoid brushing until the base coat is loosened from the surface. If the product has dried on the surface, reapply a coat of stripper prior to removal of finish for best results. Stripped finishes can be removed with a brush or squeegee. In a flow system, allow stripped residue to settle in container and decant stripper for reuse. For best results once finishes are removed, rinse with water. Denatured alcohol can be used as an alternative to water.

Semi-paste strippers may be applied with a brush or roller, preferably in one direction. Product can also be sprayed with a stainless steel spray system with a Teflon® tip pressure of 200-300 psi. Apply a liberal coat and allow product to strip all coatings prior to removal. Thin coatings and clear finishes will usually strip in 2-30 minutes. For items with multiple coatings, apply a liberal coat of stripper, and then apply a sheet of polyethylene directly to the stripper. The polyethylene sheet will allow the stripper to remain wet and active for several hours. If the product has dried on the surface, reapply a coat of stripper prior to removal of finish for best results. Stripped finishes can be removed with a scraper. Removed finishes with stripper can be reapplied to extend the life of the stripper.

Benco Sales— The Leader in Industrial Strippers

For best results, once finishes are removed from the surface, rinse with water. Denatured alcohol can be used as an alternative to water. If stains remain, rinse with an oxalic solution of 1 pound oxalic acid with 5 gallons of water, let stand for 30 seconds or more and wash the oxalic solution from the surface.

Methylene Chloride based strippers have optimal performance when the chemical is 70 degrees F. The stripper is typically 20 degrees F cooler than the ambient temperature, so it is wise to store off the concrete in colder weather. One can also use a drum heater but do not exceed 75-80 degrees. At high temperatures Methylene Chloride and other solvents in the stripper could be “cooked off” and may also release unhealthy vapors at high heats above 105 degrees F.

Stir your stripper with a broom handle to insure good distribution of chemicals throughout the remover. Chemicals will separate through transport, temperature changes and idle time in your shop. Remember... Stirred not shaken.

Strippers that are non-caustic activated are great on clear finishes and still offer good removal of most paints. Caustic activated strippers are better on painted pieces and slightly more aggressive on stubborn clear finishes. Caustic activated strippers may darken wood but that darkness is easily removed with an oxalic acid rinse as prescribed above.

Benco Sales— The Leader in Industrial Strippers

Benco B17 Industrial Paint Remover

Benco B17 Industrial Paint Remover is a liquid, non-flammable remover widely used to remove durable coatings from steel and aluminum. B17 is the most aggressive formulation developed by Benco Sales for the removal of technologically advanced coatings designed for extreme durability and chemical resistance. Epoxy coatings, powder coatings, electro-coat coatings, polyurethanes, and UV/EB coatings are rapidly removed by submersion in B17. B17 is also effective on recently developed ceramic coatings.

B17 is an acidic solution and is also formulated with ingredients that limit evaporation and that provide formulation stability, allowing the product to be extensively used and reused without performance deterioration. B17 can be used in temperatures ranging from 35 degrees F to 100 degrees F. The product will begin to boil at 104 degrees F and will not freeze. B17 was developed more than 15 years ago and has been an effective stripping solution on coatings not able to be stripped by other products or only stripped by blasting with abrasives.

B17 is the most effective product available for the removal of powder coatings. It is a stable, non- flammable product used at room temperature. With most coatings, the removal process involves rapid swelling of the coating and delamination from the substrate. Typical strip time for most powder coating is 5-15 minutes for complete delamination and removal of the coating. Do not agitate or aerate the strip tank as it will encourage evaporation of chemicals in the blend. The delaminated coatings are easily removed from the stripping tank, and when totally dried will not contain residue of the stripper. It is not necessary to remove the stripped coating from the tank, the stripped coatings will not affect stripping effectiveness of B17. The best time to remove stripped coatings is when they are affecting operation. B17 retains stripping effectiveness better than any other product available and will continue to perform until almost all product is used up by either carry-out or evaporation. B17 has the added benefit of being effective at room temperature and requiring no heating to increase effectiveness. B17 will strip most coatings in a small fraction of the time required by all other products capable of removing powder coatings, and B17 strips in less than 10% of the time required for blast stripping without damage of the substrate caused by blasting.

B17 is most effective and intended to be used by submerging the item into B17 liquid. B17 is used at full strength and not diluted. The best receptacle to store B17 for use is a container made of HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene), a 12 gauge steel or heavier, or of stainless steel. Do not store in aluminum and the only plastic is HDPE as B17 will melt other plastics. It is recommended that you cover your B17 when not in use. It does not need to be airtight. B17 contains ingredients that limit evaporation, and when air movement over the stripping receptacle is precluded by a cover and the temperature is less than 90 degrees F, the evaporation of the product is substantially limited.

B17 is safe to use on all steel items. It is widely used to strip coatings from aluminum, but will etch aluminum if contact time exceeds 2-3 hours. B17 is not appropriate for use on magnesium items or on galvanized surfaces because it will rapidly etch these surfaces and may damage them. Please use B14 for those applications.

Stripping Procedures

Apply Benco B17 by submerging item in the stripper. Do not apply by a flow or continuous flow pump system. Application by brush may be appropriate for smaller items.

Immerse and allow product to strip all coatings prior to removal.

For items with multiple coatings, one application will remove multiple coatings. If one application does not remove all coatings, immerse again immediately and residual coatings should be rapidly removed.

If the product has dried on the surface, reapply a coat of stripper prior to removal of finish for best results.

Stripped finishes can be removed with a scraper or brush, although brushing is not necessary on most items. Removed finishes with stripper can be reapplied to extend the life of the stripper.

Once finishes are removed from the surface, submerge into a water bath. Keep the PH in water bath between 8-10. The most effective water bath is a heated bath to 104 degrees F which will also flash off Methylene Chloride, leaving no residual Methylene Chloride in the water bath. The water bath is important to trap trace chemicals and aid in neutralizing any acids caught in crevices. After water bath, remove and rinse.

Do not use on magnesium surfaces. (Benco B14 is safe for magnesium)

Use extreme caution with this product, as it will severely burn skin and eyes on contact. Consult the SDS for more specific product and safety information.

In most cases, aluminum parts are cleaned sufficiently for re-coating. Steel parts may flash rust after stripping, and a rust inhibitor like Benco G21 can be applied to prevent flash rusting. The rust inhibitor is easily removed with soap and water prior to re-coating.

Best Practices

B17 is best used in a well-ventilated isolated area in an HDPE tank or heavy gauge steel tank with a cover. It is acceptable for the stripping tank to be located outside if no sunlight can reach the tank and if temperatures do not exceed 104 degrees F. Since B17 contains methylene chloride, it should not be used in any area where contact with a gas flame or electric heating element can occur. While non-flammable, contact with gas flames or electric heating elements can break apart methylene chloride into chlorine and phosgene fumes that are hazardous and can corrode heating systems. The best heating system for the stripping area is infrared heating where the element temperature is less than 1000 degrees F. Infrared heat is widely available and is very efficient because it heats the individual item rather than the air.
