ART + DESIGNThe art + design department at Salem State offers an exciting and dynamic avenue to the worlds of fine art design and education Express yourself creatively in broad yet comprehensive courses of study exploring both traditional and cutting edge media while producing a professional portfolio that will enhance your future career The art + design program is a liberal arts curriculum structured to give you an in-depth experience in the visual arts with an emphasis on studio production It encourages students to develop creativity through discovery along with ability to observe and analyze
Students have the opportunity to exhibit their work at the Winfisky Gallery on campus and in public spaces in the city of Salem Salem State is also home to a state-of-the-art glassblowing studio
Concentrations include art education art history graphic design interactive multimedia painting photography printmaking and 3-D studio
The art + design department at Salem State is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design Admission to the art + design major requires an art portfolio
DANCEThe dance program allows you to explore your creative voice through the art of dance The dance major prepares students to enter various aspects of the dance profession or to continue with graduate studies in dance The dance minor offers a flexible plan of study allowing you to pursue personal interests in your dance studies Students have many opportunities to perform choreograph and attend master classes and performances presented by regionally and nationally known visiting dance artists In addition students may attend the annual American College Dance Festival The dance faculty nurture studentsrsquo technical proficiency critical thinking skills and artistic voice through a contemporary approach to dance and a broad range of course offerings
ENGLISHmdashCREATIVE WRITING CONCENTRATIONThe English department at Salem State offers undergraduate programs with ample opportunities to display studentsrsquo writing capabilities For example the department sponsors the Writersrsquo Series which brings several accomplished authors to campus each year and Soundings East a national literary magazine The program is also a major sponsor of the annual Massachusetts Poetry Festival which is held in downtown Salem every year and it hosts the Salem Poetry Seminar in which a dozen select student poets from Massachusetts state universities are chosen for a weeklong poetry intensive with esteemed faculty
MUSICAccredited by the National Association of Schools of Music the music program provides you with the opportunity to deepen your understanding of music and explore the music industry through a variety of exciting courses at various levels The innovative music major curriculum lays a solid foundation of music understanding to which you can add courses that will point you toward your musical and academic goals
At Salem State yoursquoll be encouraged to develop your artistic passions all students are encouraged to participate in ensembles andor enroll in music classes Regardless of your major you will find the opportunity to explore sharpen and refine your talents on our campus

THEATRE AND SPEECH COMMUNICATIONThe theatre and speech communication department at Salem State is the only public university program in New England to be accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre It is a ldquohands-onrdquo theatre program where you will have the opportunity to work in collaboration with theatre faculty and staff in all areas of your theatre study
Our alumni place well in graduate schools conservatories as high school theatre educators and in the professional world from regional theatres to Broadway Salem State theatre has won numerous national and regional awards with its involvement in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival In the past 18 years Salem State theatre has had nine acting students represent New England at The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival three have won the top national prize the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship
The department offers a BFA or BA in theatre arts with concentrations in performance design technical theatre stage management or secondary education as well as a 4+1 masterrsquos program in theatre education Admission to the BFA theatre program requires an audition or portfolio Visit salemstateeduadmissions for more information

CENTER FOR CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS (CCPA)The CCPA produces 100 events a year in art creative writing dance music and theatre These events feature students faculty and administrators and recognized professional performers and artists Financial support of the CCPA not only underwrites events with world class visiting artists and student performances but annually allows for 20 students to receive Presidential Arts Scholarships of $1000 Up to five students can earn Summer Artistic Development grants for innovative artistic projects during the summer of their junior and senior years For more information visit salemstateeduarts
NEW SOPHIA GORDON CENTER FOR CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTSRenovations of the Mainstage Theatre have begun The project will create a new face for the universityrsquos North Campus and transform the existing space into the Sophia Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts The 470-seat center will provide a contemporary theater facility for faculty and student performances and for the use of the regional community In addition the 32727-foot renovated space will offer informal social and gathering spaces for the Salem State community The project is expected to be complete in fall 2016
STUDENT GROUPS AND CLUBSMUSIC SOCIETY is a social and cultural forum for musicians and non-musicians alike
REPERTORY DANCE provides students with performance opportunities including a dance concert each semester

CENTER FOR CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS (CCPA)The CCPA produces 100 events a year in art creative writing dance music and theatre These events feature students faculty and administrators and recognized professional performers and artists Financial support of the CCPA not only underwrites events with world class visiting artists and student performances but annually allows for 20 students to receive Presidential Arts Scholarships of $1000 Up to five students can earn Summer Artistic Development grants for innovative artistic projects during the summer of their junior and senior years For more information visit salemstateeduarts
NEW SOPHIA GORDON CENTER FOR CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTSRenovations of the Mainstage Theatre have begun The project will create a new face for the universityrsquos North Campus and transform the existing space into the Sophia Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts The 470-seat center will provide a contemporary theater facility for faculty and student performances and for the use of the regional community In addition the 32727-foot renovated space will offer informal social and gathering spaces for the Salem State community The project is expected to be complete in fall 2016
STUDENT GROUPS AND CLUBSMUSIC SOCIETY is a social and cultural forum for musicians and non-musicians alike
REPERTORY DANCE provides students with performance opportunities including a dance concert each semester
STUDENT THEATRE ENSEMBLE provides students with performance and production opportunities on campus
SOUNDINGS EAST is a nationally distributed literary magazine produced entirely by a student staff
UNITED STATES INSTITUTE FOR THEATRE TECHNOLOGY (USITT) chapter is for students in design production and technology for the performing arts
