Understanding the Sale Catalog DataEven though the sale cattle originate from four distinct breeding operations, we all have some things in common. All of the consignorspay close attention to EPDs and Indexes of A.I. and natural sires and how they will mate with their existing cows to produce calves witheven better EPDs and Indexes with each subsequent generation of cattle. Most of you that are reading this sale catalog, already have a good understanding of how selecting bulls with better EPDs and indexescan help to improve the profitability of your cattle operation. To help you understand how we have presented the catalog data, we haveprovided some definitions and explanations.

Note: All the sale bulls were ultrasound scanned for carcass traits by Dr. Dean Pringle of Athens, GA on November 13, 2014. The datawas not yet available by the time that this catalog went to print, but the data will be available in a sale day supplement sheet.

All the sale bulls will be given a complete Breeding Soundness Examination prior to the sale and their scrotal measurements will be listedon the sale supplement sheet available at checkin on sale day.

All the bulls were developed on pasture and commodity rations made up of soyhulls, corn gluten, peanut bermuda grass hay and pasture. All the bulls have been fully vaccinated and boostered. Health papers will be provided free of charge to all bulls that require them.

Note: To help you determine where a particular bull ranks within the breed, we placed what percentile a bull ranks for that EPD trait,on the line directly beneath the EPD or Index. For instance, the Angus bull that has a CE EPD of 8, ranks in the top 30% of the breed.

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire's calves will be born when he is bred to first-calfheifers.Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that ofother sires.Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calvingease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire's daughters will calve as first calf heifers compared to othersiresMaternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire's genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf's weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire's progeny compared toprogeny of other sires.Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of othersires.Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires.Docility (Doc), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire's calves. In herds where temperament problemsare not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performancefor preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expectedfavorable dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable.Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance forpostweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first calf heifers and mature cows) with theportion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold.Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Strickland Angus Farm is proud to be the host site for the 3rd annual Strickland –Driggers Bull Sale.

The first Registered Angus cattle were purchased by my grandparents, Ernest and Rubye Strickland,

from the Dwight Kennedy herd / Claxton, GA in 1952. Angus and commercial cattle were summered

free range In the Fort Stewart “area” with the farm being located on its western border in Evans

County. In those days the Strickland cattle were identified by left ear notch: Swallow Tail Fork /

Underbit. We continue to run a small herd of commercial cows on the Evans County farm.

The farm in Glennville was purchased in 1969 by my folks: Dr Jim and Norma Strickland.

The Strickland Angus cows have been steadily upgraded in the last 15 years by adding quality females

from the Bridges, Turnpike Creek, CAM Ranches and Yon cow herds. We have high hopes for a strong

set of AI influenced females that are entering their first years of production.

2014 has been a roller coaster year for the Strickland Family. My father Jim, (or Doc as most knew him)

lost his battle with cancer in August. It was also in the past year that he got to see the cattle market

reach unprecedented high price levels. His wisdom and experience are, and will be greatly missed.

That being said, we are blessed with good water, productive ground, and a very strong will to sustain

these farms for future generations.

Jes Strickland
