MethodologyExpatistan collects data continuously through an onlinesurvey available to expatriates at expatistan.com. Thesurvey gathers constantly updated price points for awide set of products and services representative ofexpatriates’ common expenses. The collected dataundergoes validation, statistical analysis and testing. Itis cross-checked and enhanced with data from othersources available online, including the UN StatisticsDivision and the World Bank. Spurious data is detectedand discarded.

The index is calculated net-to-net, excluding taxesother than those charged at the moment of payment,such as sales or value-added taxes. Inflation rates areused to update data when appropriate.

In countries where the official exchange rate isartificially set and the real exchange rate used ineveryday transactions is significantly different from theofficial rate (in Venezuela, for example), an alternativeor parallel rate may be used.
